Visual information has become an effective medium of communication for
people across the globe. Rather, it has become an essential ingredient to convey
information. An image as a media of communication is possible only when its perception
is determined by humans. In the field of photography, aesthetics is perceived as an
appreciation of beauty in an image or a photograph. This paper presents an organized
review of the prevalent literature on image aesthetics. Initially, we discuss the low-level,
middle-level, and high-level image attributes with their aesthetic contributions; this is
followed by ways to bridge the existing semantic gap between them. We further elaborate
on the existing computational frameworks, which are used in literature for image
aesthetics evaluation and enhancements. We conclude by providing an extensive
discussion of our interpretation of the literature survey.
