The main objective of this research is to study the design philosophy of primary and secondary support of NATM tunnel for an underground metro in urban areas. The designand analysis of tunnel portion by NATM method is only considered in this research. The location consists of the varying geological formations, from soil to weathered rock.Majorly the empirical methods like Rock Mass Rating and Q-system has played a major role in underground construction.This research completely covers the construction stage modeling in FEM based analysis with comprehensive geotechnical data of Mumbai metro line-3,package7.The study also describes the instrumentation and monitoring in NATM construction. The results demonstrate that the derived primary supports from analytical methods and numerical analysis are sufficient to keep the displacement at the surface and tunnel crown within permissible limits.
