Data stored in databases keep growing as a result of businesses requirements for more information. A big portion of the cost of keeping large amounts of data is in the cost of disk systems, and the resources utilized in managing that data. This paper introduces various compression techniques for data stored in row oriented as well as column-oriented databases. Keeping data in this compressed format as it is operated upon has been shown to improve query performance by up to an order of magnitude. Intuitively, data stored in columns is more Compressible than data stored in rows. Compression algorithms perform better on data with low information entropy (high data value locality) i.e are used for optimization purpose. © 2010 IEEE.

Database compression techniques for performance optimization

The present article evaluates the effect of variation of WF on the tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at break. The pin-bearing properties usually correlate well with tensile properties. Tensile strength and pin-bearing strength decrease but tensile modulus increases on addition of WF. The tensile strength, pin-bearing strength, and mode of pin-bearing failure also depends on the void content. Increase in void content has a detrimental effect on all the mechanical properties. Wide variation is observed in impact strength because of unpredictable void content due to use of non-vented extrusion process. TGA indicates insignificant effect of WF on thermal stability of composites. Infrared spectroscopy indicates some interaction between PVC and WF. © The Author(s), 2010.

Mechanical properties of highly filled PVC/wood-flour composites

This paper gives the improved method of generating a binary image IFS using Genetic Algorithm. To find the maps of IFSs that can encode black and white (BW) images, the Genetic Algorithm uses a variable-length genotype representation, i.e., each IFS is represented as a list of maps, and a map is represented as a set of real parameters. Special genetic operators that maintain and control the feasibility of the individuals in the population are adopted. A fitness function is defined that measures the similarity between the attractor and the image that penalizes a large number of maps and high contractivity factors. © 2010 IEEE.

Polyethersulfone (PES)-expanded graphite nanocomposites have been prepared by solution blending route after sonicating expanded graphite in dichloromethane. It has been observed that ultrasonication results in nanosheets formation leading to a low percolation threshold of 3wt.%. At 5wt.% filler loading the conductivity is of the order of 10-2S/cm. Hopping type of charge transport occurs at 3.2wt.% expanded graphite in PES below which capacitive effects couple. The effective dielectric constant at low frequency increases with filler concentration. Impedance measurement has been carried out to evaluate interfacial capacitance which, for 3.2wt.% expanded graphite addition in PES, increases to 110pF from 32pF for 1wt.% expanded graphite in the polymer. DSC analysis shows an increment of 12°C in the Tg of PES with 3wt.% expanded graphite suggesting interaction between the polymer and filler. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

Polyethersulfone-expanded graphite nanocomposites: Charge transport and impedance characteristics

One of the challenging problems of gas production is the liquid loading of a gas well. It is the inability of the produced gas to remove the produced liquids from the well bore. This phenomenon has a significantly negative impact on gas well production rate and reservoir pressure due to build up of liquids in the well bore. The accumulated liquid may be in the form of formation water, condensed water or hydrocarbons condensate which acts as a hindrance to the formation gas getting produced. The ultimate recovery of gas is dependent on the economic removal of accumulated liquids, to allow the gas to get produced. This paper discusses a new idea of using dielectric heating using microwaves to heat and vaporize the water and hydrocarbons in the wellbore, if present. As a result of this heating, the fluid density decreases and the gas and vapours flow naturally to the surface. The frequency of microwaves in general is 2450 MHz; depending on the need, the frequency can be varied. Experiments were carried out on the use of this technology and the results are encouraging. This paper discusses this new technique, results obtained from conducted experiments, and provides advantages to the current methods. Copyright 2011, Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Gas Well Deliquification Using Microwave Heating

The transparent WDM optical networks in absence of electrical regenerators reduce the overall network cost. The Quality of Service (QoS) in such networks can be guaranteed if and only if the Bit Error Rate (BER) and the crosstalk induced power penalty is significantly reduced. In this paper we have studied the wavelength assignment mechanism based on BER blocking probability and power penalty blocking probability. The blocking probability is found to be the function of node count and wavelength count as well while considering the scalability of optical crossconnect (OXC). A wavelength assignment strategy is analyzed based on knowledge of crosstalk component, BER and power penalty at each node. ©2010 IEEE.

Voice Web, as the name suggests, accesses web resources via voice. VoiceXML is the markup language used to develop speech applications. VoiceXML is interactive and allows voice input to be received and processed by voice browser. Unfortunately, the navigation of VoiceXML document is completely controlled by application developer. Also, the user does not have flexibility to utter random word from currently executing dialog. The aim of the paper is to address the weakness of VoiceXML and develop an application, which dynamically detects recognition candidates in user content, in contrast with recognition candidates of the existing voice web, which depend on the application developer. In this application, a news service is implemented along with dictionary of IT-specific terms and dictionary of words from currently executing news. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

A voice web application based on dynamic navigation of VXML

An audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) study has been carried out in the Bakreswar Hot Spring (BHS) area of eastern India to locate the geothermal source in the vicinity of BHS. Phase-tensor analysis of the AMT data shows that the region is broadly 2D. Rapid relaxation inversion (RRI) for both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes has been carried out to obtain resistivity images of the subsurface. AMT results show that the north-south fault close to Bakreswar is a shallow feature, not deeper than m and thus cannot act as a heat source. The subsurface formation below the fault zone is highly resistive up to a great depth, indicating the absence of a heat source and geothermal reservoir in the vicinity of the BHS. AMT results indicate that the location of the geothermal reservoir is deep and lies beyond the profiles of measurement in the northwestern side of the Bakreswar Hot Spring. {\textcopyright} 2010 Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
