The crystaIIinity, particle size and morphology of polyphenylene sulphide synthesized under various conditions have been investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that crystaIIinity decreased from 71 to 66% with increase of reaction time. The growth of particle size as well as total polymer mass followed a time dependence of the form X =X0 (1 -e-αt) The particle size distribution curve was noted to be sharp centring at 3 μn for short reaction time, high speed of stirring and also for low concentration of reactants. The particle morphology showed very strong dependence on various reaction parameters. Intricate sheaf-like morphology was noted for the particles at long reaction times or low stirring speeds while oblong platelet type two-dimensional morphology was noted when a low concentration of reactants was used. © 1986 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Structure, growth and morphology polyphenylene sulphide

The resistivity of a filled polymer system has been evaluated as a function of the filler concentration. The system is based on a model which takes into account non-ohmic conduction phenomena such as the Schottky effect, the Poole-Frenkel effect, space charge limited conduction and quantum mechanical tunneling. It has been shown that most of the reported data on polymers loaded with conducting carbon blacks or other fillers can be explained on the basis of this model without invoking the formation of contacts between the particles. The internal conduction processes responsible for the charge transport in these systems are also delineated.

Effect of a third component on the electrical properties of conducting polymer composites

The structural modifications and the changes in crystallinity of poly(phenylenesulfide) (PPS) during high-pressure molding and curing have been investigated as a function of pressure and temperature using wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), infrared absorption (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been found that the crystalline content of the molds varies with applied pressure as Pα where α is 1.5. Major changes in the IR spectra are found in the range of 800 to 600 cm−1 and attributed to structural modifications which have also been noted in the scanning electron micrographs. These various results have been mainly explained on the basis of plastic deformation and flow during the high-pressure molding process.

Modification of surface structure and crystallinity in compression-molded poly(phenylene sulfide)

Aluminium surfaces are oxidised to form Al2O3 in a freshly prepared anodising bath and in a bath deliberately contaminated with Cl- ions at concentrations ranging from 35 mu g ml-1 to 200 mu g ml-1. It is observed that the presence of Cl- ions in the anodising bath inhibits the oxidation process and the degree of inhibition is dependent on the Cl- ion concentration. It is further observed that a constant electric field of the order of 107 V cm -1 exists across the growing oxide throughout the oxidation process in both unchlorinated and chlorinated electrolytes. Neutron activation, Auger and ESCA analyses of the oxides show that the Cl- ions have diffused into the oxide layer due to the existence of the accelerating electric field across the oxide. It is inferred that the oxidation inhibition in the presence of Cl- ions in the bath is caused by screening of the required oxygen ions by the presence of the Cl- ions in the oxide.

Role of chloride ions in the anodic oxidation of aluminium

A theory to explain the switching behaviour and variation of the capacitance with temperature and voltage, is proposed for vacuum evaporated metal-glass-metal devices. It is also shown that the observed capacitance of the device could be negative under voltage bias conditions. It is proposed that the voltage Vth at which the device changes from the off state to the on state and the transition voltage Vcn at which the capacitance of the device becomes negative should be related to the glass transition temperature Tg. A study of Al-Ge15Te81Sb2-Al devices reveals that the experimental results are in concurrence with the theoretical predictions.

Switching and negative capacitance in Al-Ge15Te 81Sb2S2-Al devices

The thermal sensitization process for the enhancement of photoconductivity in tetragonal lead monoxide has been investigated. At a critical annealing temperature the photosensitivity has been found to have a maximum value (≅5×102) while the conductivity is observed to have a minimum value (≅10-10Ω cm). The transient response of the photocurrent exhibits an overshoot, the height of which is strongly dependent on the annealing temperature. These and other findings have been explained on the basis of sensitization due to the creation of two types of centres in the material. © 1983 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Sensitization of photoconductivity in tetragonal lead monoxide

THE PHOTOSENSITIVITY AND PHOTOCURRENT KINETICS OF ZINC OXIDE-POLYMER BINDER LAYERS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED AS A FUNCTIONOF POLYMER CONCENTRATION, INTENSITY OF INCIDENT LIGHT AND APPLIED FIELD IN THE SURFACE CELL CONFIGURATION. IT WAS FOUNDTHAT THE PHOTOSENSITIVITY AT A CERTAIN POLYMER CONCENTRATION WAS REMARKABLY HIGHER THAN THAT FOR PURE ZINC OXIDE. THE GROWTH AND DECAY RATES OF THE PHOTOCURRENT WERE ALSO FOUND TOBE HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE POLYMER CONCENTRATION. THE I-V CHARACTERISTICS FOR THESE PHOTORECEPTORS REVEALED A HIGHLY NON-OHMIC NATURE OF CONDUCTION MECHANISM. THESE OBSERVATIONS HAVE BEEN EXPLAINED ON THE BASIS OF A MODEL BASED ON THE BARRIER LAYER THEORY FOR THE PHOTOCONDUCTIVITY.

PHOTOCONDUCTIVITY OF ZNO-POLYMER PHOTORECEPTORS.

The charge storage characteristics of poly(vinyl alcohol) films crosslinked by doping with potassium dichromate and heat treatment have been investigated by surface-charge decay measurement and thermally stimulated depolarization techniques. It has been shown that the mobility of charge carriers decreases with increasing density of crosslinks giving rise to increase in charge storage capacity. © 1982.

Effect of crosslinking on the charge storage characteristics of poly(vinyl alcohol)

Thermally stimulated depolarization (TSD) currents have been studied for lead monoxide powder after dark- and photo-polarization. Two peaks have been observed at 320 and 370 K in the TSD spectra corresponding to trapping levels at 0.3 and 0.5 eV, respectively. From the time and intensity dependence of these peaks it has been shown that the dark polarization is mainly due to the trapping of carriers at shallow levels located at 0.3 eV whereas the photopolarization arises from the carriers trapped at deeper levels corresponding to the second peak. © 1982.
