Additive manufacturing (AM) creates three-dimensional objects by depositing materials layer by layer. Selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the important AM processes used for metal. In SLM the fully melt metal transforms into a solid three-dimensional part. This process allows for faster, more complex, and less time-consuming manufacturing. The material INCONEL718 (IN718) is a nickel superalloy used due to its good weldability and can be processed using a variety of manufacturing technologies. More than 50 process parameters control the quality of SLM-manufactured components. The process parameters control the performance parameters. The anisotropic behavior is observed in the IN718. In this research, the superalloy IN718 was created by additive manufacturing (AM) using a selective laser melting approach, and the post-AM thermal treatments were evaluated. The effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties is observed using UTS and Hardness as performance and heat treatment’s impacts on microstructure, process-induced flaws, and microstructural behavior were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The samples are simulated using the SIMUFACT ADDITIVE to calculate the yield stress. Investigation on mechanical behaviour of inconel 718 manufactured through additive manufacturing

Globally, SLM is changing the way organizations design and manufacture products. It is an emerging manufacturing technique. This technique is classified as additive layered manufacturing, as the component is built by adding material in layers. Components/parts manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) find a lot of applications in many industries like aerospace, biomedical and automobile. Proposed research work investigates the effect of various process parameters on the mechanical properties manufactured by the SLM process of Stainless Steel 316L [SS316L]. The literature indicates that process parameters having maximum impact on mechanical properties includes Laser Power (P), Exposure Time (T), Border Power (BP) and Hatch Spacing (HS). The effect of these process parameters on Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and Surface Roughness (SR) was investigated. This research work aims to enhance the performance measures, by optimizing the process parameters used in SLM with Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) technique. GOA was used to achieve maximum ultimate tensile strength and minimum surface roughness in a single set of experimentation through a multiobjective approach.

Nature inspired multi objective optimization of selective laser melting of SS316L with the microstructural investigations

Nickel based superalloys belong to a special class of high performance alloys that feature large amounts of nickel. The uniqueness of superalloys lies in their design features, most notably mechanical strength, durability, etc. Inconel 718 (IN718) is a nickel based superalloy that exhibits high tensile and impact resistant properties, along with good high temperature corrosion resistance. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is additive manufacturing (AM) technology aimed at melting and fusing metal powders using high power density lasers to produce precision functional parts. The accuracy and functional characteristics of manufactured parts are highly dependent on process parameters. The processing parameters that control the SLM process comprise laser power (P), hatch spacing (HS), exposure time (t), and border power (BP). This work primarily focuses on finding the combined effect of these process parameters on the surface roughness (SR) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of IN718 manufactured by SLM using the design of experiments (DOE).

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly growing manufacturing technique. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is most important method in an additive manufacturing. The aim of the research is to analyze the mechanical properties of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg Aluminum alloy and compared with conventional manufacturing. In this work the mechanical properties are investigated of selective laser melting manufactured AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy and compared with sand and gravity die cast AlSi10Mg parts. The results are validated using simufact additive manufacturing software.

Comparative study of mechanical properties of additively manufactured aluminum alloy

3D printing or rapid prototyping are other terms for additive manufacturing (AM). AM is a technique that involves layering materials to create a three-dimensional object. AM is critical for producing complex geometric objects with high precision. The exponential development of additive manufacturing over the last decade has shown significant potential in cost-effective manufacture of high-quality product. It is difficult to produce superalloys like Inconel 625 using traditional methods, but it is much simpler with AM. Atomic diffusion additive manufacturing (ADAM), a layer-by-layer process for metals based on material extrusion, was recently patented by Markforged. An indirect additive production technique such as ADAM uses a metal powder filament encased inside a plastic binder. The plastic binder is separated after the fabrication of a green part by washing and sintering post-treatments. Fabrication of four separate standard tensile specimens for metal 17-4 PH stainless steel with different process parameters as well as four parts are printed for metal Inconel 625. The tensile test is carried on UTM with these eight parts. As a result, the weight reduction due to infill density is 20%, resulting in a loss of 10–15% of the part's strength, and the UTS of the part varies due to layer orientation. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
