Additive manufacturing (AM) is the industrial name of 3D printing, which can fabricate the complex geometry model easily. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is an AM technique used for 3D component printing due to its low cost and good strength. The mechanical properties of the FDM specimens were evaluated experimentally through a tensile test. Polylactic acid (PLA), which is a thermoplastic material, is used in present investigation. It is one of the suitable materials for the FDM technique. It is a biodegradable material produced from renewable resources. The Standard tensile test was conducted on the basis of the ASTM D638 standard for the PLA specimens with a 100% infill density. The flexural specimen was modeled in accordance with the ASTM D790 standard and the material properties derived from the experiments were used for finite element analysis. Further, the finite element analysis of the flexural test is performed to examine the flexural strength of FDM components. © 2020 Author(s).

Finite element analysis of flexural test of additively manufactured components fabricated by fused deposition modelling

Bio-compostable films are needed for food packaging to maintain circular economy. Water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) is important factor in these packaging films which can be controlled by blending and incorporation of nano fillers. Polybutylelne adipate terphalate (PBAT)/ Polylactic acid (PLA) blend filled with Halloysite nano tubes (HNT) were successfully solution casted by using doctor blade method. Polyethylene glycol, PEG 400 and TritonX-100 were used as the dispersing agents for incorporation of HNT in the range of 0 to 2 wt%. All the samples were characterized for structure, morphology, mechanical and thermal properties. WVTR, and shelf life studies for green vegetables were carried out in ambient conditions. The results indicated improvement in mechanical properties of 80PBAT/20PLA/HNT filled blends compared to unfilled blends. TritonX-100 gave better dispersion of HNT than PEG400. as evidenced from XRD, SEM and FTIR analysis. Considerable decrease in WVTR was found by the addition of HNT in presence of PEG400 and TritonX-100. The effect was more pronounced in TritonX-100 since it helps to improve chain stiffening effect as reported in earlier studies. The DSC studies indicated increase of crystallinity of HNT filled blends which leads to reduction of WVTR. The evaluation of green vegetables preservation studies by different films showed that there was rapid ripening and deterioration of green vegetables as indicated by red color and shrinkage of the product in the standard low density polyethylene (LDPE) pouches and films without HNT. On the other hand in the presence of HNT the ripening rate was decreased considerably and original green color as well as freshness of green vegetables were maintained over the period of two weeks at ambient temperature conditions.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly growing manufacturing technique. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is most important method in an additive manufacturing. The aim of the research is to analyze the mechanical properties of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg Aluminum alloy and compared with conventional manufacturing. In this work the mechanical properties are investigated of selective laser melting manufactured AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy and compared with sand and gravity die cast AlSi10Mg parts. The results are validated using simufact additive manufacturing software.

Comparative study of mechanical properties of additively manufactured aluminum alloy

The orthodontists generally do not recommend application of force system above the archwire level owing to additional attachments and patient’s discomfort. Hence, the present research study focusses on application of retraction force system at the archwire level. The objective of this study is to specify an optimum combination of archwire and bracket slot size for en-masse (simultaneous) parallel retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth in labial orthodontics (LaO). In this research study, the concept (theoretical) model has been developed based on simple principles of mechanics to estimate the torque generated by different sizes of archwire in bracket slots. Based on torque value, retraction force developed by each combination of archwire and slot size was determined and compared with required retraction force of 150 gram-force on each side of sagittal plane. For combination of 0.019×0.025 inch stalinless steel SS archwire and 0.022 inch SS bracket slot, magnitude of computed retraction force matched closely with aforementioned required force than other combinations and hence, it is recommended in the present research study. The validation of selected combination of archwire and bracket slot size was done successfully by in vivo (clinical) experimentation on three patients. Thus, it proves that the aforementioned combination of archwire and bracket slot size is more suitable than others for retraction force system applied at archwire level.

Optimum force system for en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth in labial orthodontics

In the current research study, a computer application (desktop software) was developed to determine orthodontic force application points to achieve en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth. In this type of tooth movement, retraction forces are applied with retraction spring by fixing it anteriorly and posteriorly. Based on other orthodontic force, moment and distance parameters, proper location of retraction spring attachment on anterior and posterior side is needed to ensure accurate application of orthodontic appliances. In this research study, the computer application (desktop software) based on simple trigonometric calculation was developed for the ease of estimation of location of required retraction force. This computer application can be used both in labial orthodontics (LaO) and lingual orthodontics (LiO) if other force, moment, and distance parameters are known. Due to simple user interface of computer application, the task of determination of force application points will be simplified for orthodontists which is desirable. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Estimation of orthodontic force parameters with developed computer application for en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth

Face and facial components are the most significant pieces of evidence used in forensic applications. Component-based recognition and age-invariant face recognition are the key factors in forensic face recognition. A major challenge during a forensic investigation is the association of facial components with a relevant face and this paper addresses this concern using the proposed transfer learning methodology. Research has been carried out treating facial components and the face as individual and separate entities. However, they share common auxiliary information which is exploited to bring the face and facial components in a common subspace in the proposed method. This facilitates transfer of knowledge gained from a face and classification of facial components of a person using the same subspace. Stability and invariant features of the facial components catalyze a solution for the problem of recognition. Convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to extract the features of the biometrics and then they are given to a regularization framework for reducing the probability distribution difference between them. The system is trained using the face and facial components and then tested using either the full-face or individual facial components. For the transfer, the proposed Fisher linear discriminant analysis and locality preserving projection, a convolutional neural network-based algorithm gives 91% and 90% accuracy, respectively, which outperforms the Histogram of Gradient and Gabor methods for predicting an association. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Association of Face and Facial Components Based on CNN and Transfer Subspace Learning for Forensics Applications

Nowadays, developments in the Internet of Things based technologies are becoming an essential part of every aspect of human life. It has also become a norm for vehicular traffic management applications. Safe and smart ways to manage ever-increasing road traffic are essential requirements in smart cities or urban environments. Although there are various solutions for traffic management, most of them have limitations in energy efficiency, complexity, and cost. In this paper, a solution is proposed for the quick clearance of the traffic for emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, ambulances. Our approach having based on the LoRaWAN protocol, which is known for its long-range, low energy needs, low cost, scalable, and wide -area applications. LoRa devices and the TTN gateway are used to communicate with each other and to establish a green corridor for emergency vehicles. Once the green corridor is created, regular traffic is suspended for a short time to enable the emergency vehicle to cross the traffic junctions without delay. To track the location of the vehicle from the traffic signal a web page is also created. The developed system reduces the wait time for emergency vehicles and allows tracking the emergency vehicle. © 2020 IEEE.

Development of LoRaWAN based Traffic Clearance System for Emergency Vehicles

The characteristics and requirements for low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) solutions vary from application to application. This chapter discusses the different key design considerations of LPWANs. It also focuses on network design and topological aspects to give an overall architectural and design framework.
