The use of steel fibres in plain concrete helps in improving the mechanical properties of concrete structure. Thus the aim of present study is to investigate the effect of steel fibres on torsional strength improvement of concrete. The research evaluates the torsional strength and combined torsional-shear-bending strength. In this study, 20% of fly ash (class-C) is added as a replacement of binder to its weight and 1.5% steel fibres by weight of concrete. Experimental results show an improvement in torsional strength, combined torsional-shear-bending strength and crack resistance of concrete by addition of steel fibres in the concrete and a decrease in the deflection. Based on the experimental results the modified coefficient of the empirical formulae has been suggested to predict the torsional strength and torsional stress of steel fibre reinforced concrete.

Tests of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Beams under Predominant Torsion

The present article studies the effect of treatment of 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5% titanate-coupling agent (LICA 38) on various properties of fly ash–filled polypropylene (PP) composites. The fly ash content varied from 0 to 30 wt%. The mechanical and thermal properties of the composite material were evaluated, and microstructure investigated through scanning electron microscopy. Experimental results were compared with various existing models. Experimental data for tensile yield strength showed good fit to the existing models. Adhesion parameter or interfacial interaction was also evaluated though Pukanszky model. The values of yield stress and breaking strength of treated fly ash–based composites showed higher values compared to that of untreated fly ash–filled PP composites at corresponding filler content. The overall mechanical properties of fly ash–filled composites are essentially decided by wettability of the filler. It is also found that Vicat softening point improved with the addition of fly ash filler. Morphological studies of the tensile fracture surfaces of the composites revealed that the presence of titanate-coupling agent increased the interfacial interaction between fly ash and PP. It also improved the dispersion of fly ash in PP matrix. Thus, the treatment resulted in improvement in mechanical and thermal properties of the composites as compared to untreated fly ash–filled composites. The overall results showed that fly ash dispersion and interfacial adhesion are greatly affected by the amount of the coupling agent.

Studies on effect of titanate-coupling Agent (0.5, 1.5 and 2.5%) on the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of fly ash-filled polypropylene composites

Convective heat transfer in the flow of silver nanofluid through a straight tube with twisted tape inserts was investigated experimentally. This straight tube was used as absorber/receiver tube in parabolic trough collector. The experiments were conducted for Reynolds number range 500 < Re < 6000 with twisted tape inserts of different twist ratio range 0.577 < H/D < 1.732. This experimental study shows that twisted tape inserts enhances heat transfer rate in the tube. The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the flow of silver nanofliud with 5 % volume fraction (concentration) are higher compared to the flow of water. From this study, Nusselt number, friction factor and enhancement factor are found as 2.0–3.0 times, 10–48.5 and 135–175 %, respectively with silver nanofliud. Finally new possible correlations for predicting heat transfer and friction factor in the flow of silver nanofliud through the straight tube with twisted tape inserts are proposed.

Well Trajectory Survey of a Directional Well

This article presents simulated and experimental performance evaluations of a few selected low global warming potential refrigerants as alternatives to HCFC-22 for room air conditioners. The alternatives considered are HC-290, HC-1270, HFC-161, HFC-32, and HFC-1234yf. The performance of each alternative has been evaluated by optimizing heat exchangers, compressors, and capillary for the maximum EERAC. Experiments were also conducted as per IS 1391 Part 1 for a few alternatives, including HC-290, HFC-161, and HFC-32. HC-290 and HFC-32 gave an EERAC of 3.7. The experiments indicate that HC-290 offers the best performance, and room air conditioners that have a capacity of less than 5.2 kW can meet the exiting safety standards. The discharge temperatures of HFC-32 are relatively high and need special attention in the compressor design. HFC-161 is also a potential ultra-low global warming potential alternative to HCFC-22, once its safety classification is established.

Low GWP refrigerants as alternatives to HCFC-22 in room air conditioners

Magnitude and phase of major forces that act on a loose non-cohesive particle (sediment) on single layer fixed rough bed (longitudinal slope 2%) were determined from experiments in a laboratory flume under waves. The loose particles were glass spheres of diameter 1.58 ± 0.1 mm and specific gravity 2.5. The range of wave-height-to-water-depth (H/h) ratio in the experiments was 0.366 < H/h < 0.521. The measurement plane was parallel to the bed and located at a height of ½ loose particle diameter (ds) above the rough bed. Grayscale morphological image processing methods were used to separate the fluid and loose sediment phases from the same oblique particle image velocimetry (OPIV) image based on their signature sizes. The OPIV calibration method is presented and validated with conventional particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. Loose particle velocity and accelerations along with the associated fluid velocity and fluid total accelerations in the wave direction were determined simultaneously by processing OPIV used to compute magnitude and phase of major forces that act on the loose sediment particle. It was observed that for same wave period (T), an increase in H/h ratio has a dominant effect on sediment displacements onshore. The phase along with magnitude of the major driving force (drag and fluid accelerations) plays an important role at initiation of loose sediment from its rest position. It is suspected that the loose particle overcomes a critical bed friction force with higher H/h ratio as magnitude of drag force is higher. The resultant force then displaces the sediment onshore which experiences sliding and or rolling motions very close to bed, in a thin fluid layer over maximum protrusion of bed sediments. At the instance, the gravitational force plus bed frictions overcomes the lift force the loose particle attains a new position onshore.

Design of Wireless Sensor Network for Home Monitoring

Smart antenna attempt to enhance the received signal, suppress all interfering signals, and increase capacity. Beamforming is one of the mostly used antenna technique. It adjust the radiation beam in one specific direction also reduces multiple access interference. It also reduces common channel interference and multiple path fading, in result it increases capacity of mobile network. In this paper two antenna beam forming algorithms are analyzed. These two algorithms are Least Mean Square and Minimum Variance Distortionless Response. Outputs of these two algorithms are in weights. By using these outputs weights, two parameters i.e. Mean Square Error and Power Beam Width are calculated and two algorithm are compared by this parameters and respective results are discussed.

Analysis of minimum variance distortionless response and least mean square beamforming algorithm for smart antenna

Information Security is a major issue worldwide. Various steps are being taken to improve and upgrade security measures. Border crossings across countries have become one of them. Therefore the use of traditional passports has lead to an improvement in the name of E-passports. E-passports are a more secured and are denoted by a symbol. E-passports contain a small chip which stores the data of passport holder. To protect this data Cryptography is widely used. This paper shows the comparison of modular multiplication methods used for RSA algorithm for 1024 bit key length. Xilinx ISE 14.3 platform is used to perform this encryption and decryption process targeting Virtex-5 FPGA board.

Implementation of cryptography algorithm for E-passport security

Motion Estimation (ME) and Motion Compensation (MC) techniques are used for video compression which eliminates the temporal redundancy of video sequence. For motion estimation, Block Matching Algorithms (BMA) has been widely used among the various motion estimation algorithms because of its simplicity and efficiency. In BMA, search pattern with different shape or size has very important impact on search speed and distortion performance. Among various BMA, fixed pattern search algorithms are the most famous; these algorithms reduce the computational expenses significantly less, while PSNR close to Full Search (FS) algorithm. In this paper we have reviewed in brief already implemented various block based pattern search techniques and present their respective advantages and disadvantages and also review their performances based on the number of searching points and PSNR. © 2015 IEEE.
