Anthropogenic alterations have affected urban hydrology in India and have generated a wide range of hydrological problems. Such alterations include increase in directly-connected impervious cover thus reducing natural groundwater recharge. In the past urban runoff was largely viewed as a nuisance, but within the new paradigm of sustainability, this water is recognized as a potential resource. This research paper discusses the importance of managing stormwater sustainably by recharging groundwater sources. It indicates the potential of stormwater harvesting, when properly managed, as a tool to counter depleting water sources and ever-increasing demand for water. The present study aims at developing a potential stormwater recharge zone map for a sub watershed in Pune city, India using GIS. Five classes of thematic maps have been integrated to prepare the final map. Each class is assigned a weightage depending on its influence on the recharge of stormwater. The resultant map (potential stormwater recharge zone map) thus prepared is classified into four classes: Very good, good, moderate and poor.

Identification of potential stormwater recharge zones in dense urban context: A case study from Pune city

The present paper discusses the results of the study of adsorption of methylene blue on activated carbon, derived from cheap and abundantly available agro-residue of Jowar Stalk (JS) [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] on suitable heat and acid treatment. The physico-chemical and morphological characteristics of processed carbon of JS origin were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area, and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry analyses. The batch studies revealed optimum values of adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, agitation speed, grain size, temperature, and contact time as 7, 1.5 g l−1, 200 rpm, finer than 75 µm, 30 °C, and 7 h, respectively. The adsorption isotherm data were best described by Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 176.05 mg MB g−1 JS activated carbon at 30 °C, which is higher than that available with adsorbents used by past researchers. In terms of cost-effectiveness, JS carbon shows its superiority over commercially available carbon.

Smartphone applications are gaining popularity and with time many complex and computation/resource intensive applications are coming to market. These applications require more resources and consume lot of battery power, but the improvisation in battery capacity has been lagged far behind as compared to other components of mobile devices. On other hand, clouds are rich in resources and computational power. Therefore, by utilizing cloud resources for application execution we can reduce battery consumption and in turn increases battery charging intervals. This all is known as cyber foreign or computation offloading in Moble Cloud Computing. There are various factors affecting computation offloading like bandwidth. So, we had considered bandwidth as major factor in proposed offloading decision making algorithm. Our algorithm is based on divide and conquer strategy. This system focuses on time and energy saving. © 2015 ACM.

Time and energy saving through computation offloading with bandwidth consideration for mobile cloud computing

Online health communities offer tremendous medical information that could be available to all. However as is the case with other data intensive applications, this information contains hidden patterns which if explored, analyzed and understood could be very useful for administrators, medical practitioner sand patients alike. There are websites where patients express their experiences or side-effects on drugs used. In this work we collect such real time health posts from reputed websites, and perform data mining to determine the various possible associations from these posts. Also, we shall perform knowledge discovery from user posts, whereby useful 'patterns' about groups like: disease to disease, disease to drug and drug to symptom are discovered. © 2015 IEEE.

Knowledge discovery from user health posts

Diagnosis is an important task in medical science because of its criticality, efficiency and accuracy in determining whether or not a patient has a particular disease. This shall further decide the most suitable line of treatment. There has been a large increase in the number of thyroid cases over the past few years. Since thyroid has a complex relation with metabolism and body weight, it is extremely important to diagnose thyroid disease as early as possible. This paper presents an exhaustive survey of work done in the past with respect to semi-automated medical diagnosis in general and thyroid disease diagnosis in particular. Medical Diagnosis encompassed the use of classifiers like Fuzzy Neural Networks, k-Nearest Neighbor and Decision Tree, while the latter included the use of Computer-Aided Diagnosis, different Neural Networks and Support Vector Machine. Amongst these, the impact of Feature Selection using Particle Swarm Optimization and Ant Colony Optimization on classification was also surveyed. © 2015 IEEE.

Thyroid disease diagnosis: A survey

-With the dawn of cultural and traditional revolution and the age of information technology, there came a serious threat of illicit/pornographic content, which disturbs the cultural harmony of our society. So with the growing network of these content there arouse a need of application which detects such content and take a legitimate action on the same. So taking this into the consideration, the primary goal of the present study is to develop technology for detecting the illicit/pornographic content and to take legitimate action on such things. The application domain of our project is image processing and this software is going to process the images for illicit/pornographic content by using skin-tone based technology. It is going to detect how much percentage of skin is revealed in an image and depending on this is going to decide that whether that image is acceptable or not. Since the platform used is java, our application will be platform independent. The images detected by our application are going to be encrypted so that if anybody claims for his/her images as personal, the admin can even decrypt the same which makes our application as user friendly and extra secured.Thus with added features and benefits this software stands ahead of any other software is currently in market.

Analysis Of Crowdsourced Data Using Data Mining Approach For Decision Support

In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head rests on the top of the cylinder block. One of the parts of head assembly is the valve guide, which is used to orient the valves correctly. Typically valve guide is made up of cast iron and fitted in cylinder head with the use of interference fit. The study aims to find the stress developed due to interference fit in valve guide and cylinder head of air cooled diesel engine. This is done using 3D simulation model and FEA. The investigation aims to provide the design intent to resolve valve guide loosing issue in operating temperature ranges.

Stress Analysis of Shrink-fitted Cylinder Headand Valve Guide Connections via FiniteElement Analysis

Tourism has emerged as one of the largest global economic activities and agritourism is the form of tourism which capitalizes on rural culture as a tourist attraction. It has gained a new dimension as a potential income and job generating activity. The basic objective of this research is to understand and know expectations of the consumer related to agritourism experience. Agritourism center owners and agritourism visitor are key element and thus it is important to understand their characteristics and expectations to serve them better. This paper reports our survey findings on consumer opportunity focusing demographic characteristics of agritourism visitors and their way of thinking related to consumption. Descriptive statistics showed significant differences in agritourism preferences across gender, levels of agritourism experience, and amenities attached in agritourism. This also research identified that there is a group of consumer who are most interested in agritourism. Furthermore, this study results would help farmers, agritourism center owners to recognize opportunity and develop agritourism activity in region.

Agritourism in india: understanding the consumer opportunity

In business it is an accepted fact that the purpose of business is to make profits. At functional level the decisions are about what is right and wrong. Marketing and advertising both reflect and shape cultural values and norms. Through this paper an attempt is made to understand if there is any ethical dimension in the advertising or marketing communication. Some select advertisements of TV and print are taken as sample for study from the different ethical perspectives. The authors have taken the liberty of adding their views on the same. The paper highlights that there is no ethical norm followed by marketer other than the profit motive. While the paper also acknowledges that the job of marketing promotion is to sell the product and strict guidelines or law would drive the creativity away from advertising and promotion. But allowing a free run would harm the consumers, competitors and society. The authors believe that an ethical framework and a very tight control and monitoring mechanism for unethical marketing promotion are the key to success in Indian situation.
