Deployment of EMC Standards in the design of SMPS

Multi-Antenna systems allow for high data rates and improved quality of service but the cost paid for deriving these benefits is hardware complexity due to multiple antennas and the number of RF chains. Antenna selection techniques are proposed in recent time to reduce the hardware complexity to considerable extent, retaining the diversity benefits of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Space-Time coding schemes are the practical signal design techniques to realize the information theoretic capacity limits of MIMO systems. In this paper, orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) are considered for the capacity and error probability analysis of MIMO systems with receive antenna selection. The numerical and simulation results obtained using MATLAB are presented for the channel capacity and bit-error probability in Rayleigh fading channels. The results are compared with and without antenna selection of space-time block coded MIMO system.

Capacity and performance analysis of space-time block coded MIMO systems with receive antenna selection in rayleigh fading channels

Polypyrrole (PPy) was modified with ferrocene (Fc) by direct incorporation during polymerization so as to increase its sensitivity for carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor applications. Synthesis was carried out by chemical oxidative polymerization in the presence of ferrocene using ferric chloride. The presence of these species in PPy was confirmed by different characterization techniques. The CO response measurements were carried out for the sensors fabricated in a surface cell mode with active PPy + Fc films by exposing to CO gas (300 ppm) at room temperature and it was found that the response as well as the recovery characteristics of these materials is very fast and dependent on the film composition. The response factor was found to be maximum for a 1.32 mol% Fc content in the polymer. These various results can be explained on the basis of interaction of CO molecules with Fe atoms of the ferrocene together with charge transfer interaction with the PPy chain. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Conducting polypyrrole modified with ferrocene for applications in carbon monoxide sensors

Sensor arrays capable of sensing different gases combined with a sampling system and a means of pattern classification and recognition comprise a basic system for an 'Electronic Nose' In the present work, a complete process for the fabrication of micro-cavities with sensing electrodes and volumes ranging from 2.5 to 12 nano-liters for the development of polymer gas sensors has been reported. An array of eight sensing cells in four sizes have been fabricated using SU-8 negative tone resist through UV-LIGA process developed at CEERI, Pilani. The length and width of the SU-8 cavities are: 250 × 250, 300 × 300, 500 × 500 and 500 × 600 micron and the depth of each of them was optimized to be 40 micron. These cavities filled with different polymer composites comprise the basic sensing cells for a variety of gases. The current paper presents the salient features of the fabrication process in detail and the results obtained in ethanol and methanol ambient using a polymer composite developed through dissolution of styrene and polyaniline in PMMA. A number of other composites such as Pc-Ppy, Pr-Ppy, Fc+-PPy have also been synthesized and tested for a high sensitivity in carbon monoxide.

Fabrication of MEMS composite-polymer gas sensor arrays for electronic nose

Polymer mediated growth (PMG), which forms an important method for synthesis of nanoparticles, has one of the ions bound by polymer matrix while the other is allowed to diffuse and react to form desired compound. The exact role of ionic diffusion in the formation of nanoparticles has been investigated by taking specific case studies. Typically calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate have been formed in nano-size by PMG route using polyacrylamide gel. The extent of cross-linking of the polymer matrix in the formation of gel, affects the diffusivity of ions into polymer matrix and the size of particles formed. The rates of diffusion for different extents of cross-linking of polymer are estimated during the synthesis of nanoparticles using Fick's law. The inter-correlation between the particle size formation and the diffusion length has been clearly brought out in these studies. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Role of ionic diffusion in polymer gel mediated growth (PMG) technique for the synthesis of nanoparticulate fillers

The on-line image retrieval process consists of a query example image, given by the user as an input, from which low-level image features are extracted. These image features are used to find images in the database which are most similar to the query image. A drawback, however, is that these low level image features are often too restricted to describe images on a conceptual or semantic level. The gap between the high level query from the user and low level features extracted by a computer is known as the semantic gap. Translating or converting the question posed by a human to the low level features seen by the computer illustrates the problem in bridging the semantic gap. This paper proposes a novel fuzzy approach for mapping the fuzzy database while extracting the colour features from image and assigning the weights to this fuzzy content when calculating the similarity between the query image and the images in database. Number of experiments was conducted on a small colour image database and promising results were obtained. © 2007 IEEE.

Image retrieval based on fuzzy mapping of image database and fuzzy similarity distance

Digital voice systems have been in use for many applications including secure military voice communications, hands-free or cellular mobile telephone systems. In such applications, the speech signal is corrupted by environmental ambient noise. This acoustically added background noise degrades the performance of digital voice processors used for various functions like speech compressors, encoders etc. Further, due to dramatic variance in characteristics of noise in different environments, a single algorithm cannot prove equally beneficial in all circumstances. Finally, the complexity is a major barrier when dealing with systems involving runtime signal processing for mobile phones, as issues such as time complexity and MIPS as involved. Hence, some kind of noise reduction technique has to be employed in order to maintain the performance level of the system at par with that in case of a noise-free environment, regardless of the actual environment in which it is employed. To overcome these problems this paper propose to design a pre-processor system for noise suppression which should adapt to the environmental ambient noise and consequently apply a suitable algorithm. ©2007 IEEE.

Adaptive preprocessor system for noise suppression in cellular phones

High-temperature thermoplastic-graphite composites are prepared using polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and polyether sulfone (PES) containing natural graphite powder. All samples are prepared by high pressure compaction and heating to high temperatures. The effect of a third additional conducting component on the electrical resistance of these composites is studied. A low resistance of the order of 0.1 Ω can be obtained even for a graphite concentration of 50% by addition of the third component. The effect of a mixing/blending technique on the anisotropy of conductivity is investigated. Solution blending of PES with graphite leads to lower anisotropy values than powder mixing and compression moulding. The samples when exposed continuously to a working temperature of 100 °C give a small but significant reduction in electrical resistance. X-ray diffraction studies on composites prepared by different techniques indicate that there is restructuring and crystallite re-orientation of the graphite phase in the samples. A large reduction in the crystallite size is observed for samples prepared by solution blending while re-orientation occurs after heat treatment. The changes in electrical properties can be correlated with these structural transformations in the composites. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-temperature, polymer–graphite hybrid composites for bipolar plates: Effect of processing conditions on electrical properties

<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/polyvinylidene-fluoride">Polyvinylidene fluoride</a> (PVDF)–barium titanate (BaTiO3)–polyaniline (PANI) <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/hybrid-composites">hybrid composites</a> were prepared by conventional powder processing technique which exhibited remarkably high piezo-sensitivity. The effect of poling of these semi-insulating composites on their piezo-response was quite dramatic. Sensitivity factors of 3000 could be achieved for even small poling voltages as low as 180&nbsp;V/mm. The <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/synergistic-effect">synergistic effect</a> was obtained only when all three components, viz. PANI, PVDF and BaTiO3 were present at certain proportion below <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/percolation-threshold">percolation threshold</a> in the composite. The results have been explained on the basis of charge storage in the piezo components due to the high fields generated, even for low external applied field, at the inter-granular sites between the semi-conducting <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/polyaniline">polyaniline</a> <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/dispersed-phase">phase dispersed</a> in the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/insulating-matrix">insulating matrix</a>.
