The I-V characteristics of multilayer structures having vacuum deposited copper phthalocyanine on conducting polypyrrole films have been studied. Tunneling type characteristics were observed in some cases which followed the Fowler-Nordheim relationship whereas the Schottky effect was obtained in others depending on the crystalline nature/morphology of the phthalocyanine films which was affected by the substrate preconditioning prior to film deposition.

Effect of substrate preconditioning on charge transport at the phthalocyanine-conducting polymer film interface

We propose an intelligent content based image retrieval system and it is an extension of a previously published research paper (S. Kulkarni et al., 1999), where a neuro-fuzzy technique was presented. The CBIR system will accept multiple queries as input such as "mostly red and many blue and few green" that can be provided online and the outputs of the system are the images with their confidential values. The system uses fuzzy logic to interpret multiple natural expressions such as mostly, many and few and a neural network to learn the meaning of mostly red, many red and few red. The system has been implemented on the World Wide Web using CGI scripts and C programming language. Previously (S. Kulkarni et al., 1999), we presented some preliminary results using a single query. The paper presents the extension of our online system for multiple queries such as "many blue and few green". A number of experiments using our online system is conducted and the results are included and discussed in the paper. © 1999 IEEE.

An intelligent on-line system for content based image retrieval

Current-voltage characteristics were studied for polypyrrole films contacted with different electrolytes in aqueous form and complex polymer solid electrolytes. Cyclic voltammograms for the conducting polymer in aqueous medium exhibited the typical oxidation and reduction peaks, whereas for solid polymer electrolytes, there was large asymmetry in curves; with the anodic current being much higher than that in the cathodic region. A rapid switching-type response was noted in the case of polyethylene oxide-cupric chloride complex as solid electrolyte. This effect was pronounced when the same complex contained the polypyrrole deposited within it as a composite. These various results have been discussed in the light of different energy levels in the conducting polymer and the contacting medium, as well as the formation of a microdispersed system with higher charge transport. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Current-Voltage Characteristics of Conducting Polypyrrole in Solid Polyethylene Oxide Electrolytes

The fabrication of polymeric single-mode step and Gaussian refractive index profile Y-branch is described. We used poly (methyl methacrylate) and a mixture of two inter miscible monomers for the cladding and the core, respectively, of the device. The cores of the device with step-index profile were fabricated by mask-based photolithography technique whereas for Gaussian-index profiles, maskless laser direct-writing technique was used. We fabricated normal and truncated Y-branch structures. Truncated structures with phase-front accelerator shows less radiation loss and hence more efficiency for the wide-angle Y-junction compared to that of normal structures. For truncated structure the efficiency of graded-index profile is more than that of step-index profile though normal step-index profile structure is better than that of normal graded-index.

Low-Loss Wide-Angle Polymeric Single-Mode Y-Junctions

The structure, growth, and morphology of composite films made by dispersing para nitroaniline (PNA) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was investigated with respect to different crystallization methods, composition, and application of electric field. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction scans showed large variations in intensity of different reflections, especially the Okl with composition and in the presence of an electric field. In addition, it also showed the occurrence of a new crystalline structure, possibly due to complex formation between PNA and PMMA. The presence of this complex was further confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis. In a certain range of composition (30 to 40% PNA), spherulitic morphology was observed, which otherwise consisted of needle-shaped crystals dispersed in amorphous matrix. The transparency of these films also depended strongly on the crystallization conditions, and highly transparent films could be obtained, even at high PNA content by application of electric field. These various results could be explained on the basis of the intermolecular interaction between PNA and PMMA, as well as preferential growth direction and orientation of the PNA crystals.

Structure, growth, and morphology in para nitroaniline dispersed polymethyl methacrylate guest-host NLO composites

3-Nitrolawsonemonoxime, 3-aminolawsonemonoxime and their chelates of Ca(II), Mg(II), Sn(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) have been synthesized and their antibacterial activity studies were carried out. The results obtained were analysed to find the effect of change in concentration of test compounds, change in the substituents at C-3 position in the quinonoid ring of the ligand and the effect of change of central metal ion.The NO2 group at C-3 position in the quinonoid ring of the ligand showed greater activity than NH2 group. The activity of 3-nitrolawsonemonoxime was found to be decreased while that of 3-aminolawsonemonoxime, was observed to be increased due to chelation. In case of the chelates, activity was increased if their concentrations were increased sufficiently (doubled). But in case of Ca(II)-3-aminolawsonemonoximate, generally there has been no change in the activity with concentration. Elemental analysis andTG indicated ML22H2O molecular composition for the chelates.

Antibacterial Activity of 3-Nitrolawsonemonoxime, 3-Aminolawsonemonoxime and their Bivalent Metal-Chelates

The fabrication of polymeric single-mode Gaussian profile optical waveguides is described. We used poly(methyl methacrylate) and a mixture of two intermiscible monomers for the cladding and the core, respectively, of the waveguides. The cores of the waveguides were fabricated by with an argon-ion laser beam. The waveguides had single-mode Gaussian refractive-index profiles. By using such waveguides, we fabricated directional couplers for power coupling to the adjacent waveguides and also parallel waveguide arrays for preventing power coupling to adjacent waveguides for use in interconnect chips. We analyzed the characteristics of these couplers by using the coupled-mode theory and compared the results with those obtained with the beam propagation method. Experimental results showed good correlation with the theoretical values. We designed optical bus arrays for interconnect chips, considering the variation of normalized frequency V, the power penalty, and the dimensions of the waveguides and the separation between them. The number of waveguides in the bus array increased with increasing V. For a known value of V, a waveguide’s density increases with a decrease of its dimensions. The theoretical maximum number of waveguides is ∼1490/cm and ∼846/cm for 2 μm × 2 μm and 4 μm × 4 μm single-mode waveguides, respectively, to satisfy a 1-dB power penalty criterion at bit-error rate of 1029. We fabricated interconnect bus arrays with fifteen 4 μm × 4 μm waveguides for a 3-cm coupling length, and the experimental results were verified to be in good agreement with the theoretical values. © 1998 Optical Society of America.

Characteristics of polymeric optical passive single-mode waveguiding devices fabricated by an argon-ion laser

We fabricated polymeric single-mode step and Gaussian core refractive index profile optical waveguides. We used polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and mixture of two monomers for the cladding and core of the waveguide, respectively. The thickness of the core guiding layer was controlled by the spinning speed and viscosity of the polymeric solution. Cores of the Gaussian profile waveguide are fabricated by using an argon ion laser beam for UV-light irradiation on the two blended monomers. The advantages of using laser beam in fabricating core of the polymeric waveguides are discussed. Step profile waveguides are fabricated by the conventional mask-based photolithographic technique. The losses of waveguides are measured -0.05 dB/cm at 780 nm and 1.3 μm wavelengths. We fabricated the directional couplers of different coupling lengths as well as the different waveguide dimensions. Experiments for the directional couplers are carried out using a laser diode light source of wavelength λ=780 nm. We performed theoretical analysis for the directional couplers using coupled-mode and beam propagation theory, and observed good agreement with the experimental results.

Polymeric Single-mode Step and Gaussian Refractive Index Profile Directional Couplers

The effect of small concentration of methylene blue on the photocurrents were studied in solid-state photoelectrochemical cells fabricated using conducting polypyrrole (PPy) coated electrodes sandwiched with solid polymer electrolyte viz. polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with phosphoric acid. These exhibit excellent photo-response to visible light: photocurrent being 3 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than dark current depending on the concentration of the sensitizer. The current-voltage characteristics in such cells reveal that the charge transport is mainly governed by the space charge effects and the sensitization effects are due to lowering of potential barrier formed at the PPy/PVA interface under photoexcitation. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Sensitization of photocurrents in solid-state electrochemical cells using conducting polypyrrole

The structure, growth and morphology of calcium sulphate prepared in situ of a polymer has been investigated using polyethylene oxide as the growth medium. The structure was predominantly the dihydrate type with monoclinic configuration for these samples as compared to the anhydrite type with orthorhombic structure obtained in commercial samples. The crystal morphology consisted of sharp needle shape, having aspect ratio of more than 10. The concentration of the polymer used had a profound effect on the crystal size and its distribution. The size distribution became narrow and the average crystal size reduced with the increase of polymer concentration. Highly oriented crystals could be obtained with application of a small shearing force on the samples. These results have been explained on the basis of polymer mediated crystallization and large interaction between the filler and the matrix. © 1998 Chapman & Hall.
