With the increased use of composites in various sectors as a lightweight material exhibits high strength to weight ratio with tailor made properties. It becomes necessary to focus on various joining methods and different types of composite joints and their strength. The present study aims to improve the mechanical strength of single lap joint of composite material comprises of E-glass fibers and nano modified adhesive. Epoxy adhesive has been modified by dispersing Graphene Oxide (GO) to investigate the possibility of enhancement in the fatigue strength and fracture resistance of the single lap joint. Modified Hummer's method has been used for synthesis of Graphene Oxide. Experimental investigations have been carried out for comparison of tensile and fatigue strength which shows significant improvement in the number of failure cycles for 0.25 wt.% and 0.75 wt.% GO concentrations respectively as compared to neat adhesive. Tension test results showed a significant increase in the fracture toughness of the joint due to addition of GO nanoparticles. There has been 33% and 19% increase in fracture toughness in 0.25 wt.% and 0.75 wt.% GO samples respectively as compared to neat adhesive. Improvement in fracture toughness, among all other nano-reinforcements has been obtained using GO, mainly because of its better capability of deviating the crack growth path to the longer path causing the final failure to retard and consequently improving mechanical properties of the adhesive for the tensile and fatigue strength parameters. © 2021 The Author(s). Experimental investigations on fatigue life enhancement of composite (e-glass/epoxy) single lap joint with graphene oxide modified adhesive

Use of Mouth Guards (MGs) can protect from such orofacial injuries in contact sports by reducing the impact force through its shock absorption capabilities. The objective of the current study is to organize relevant literature by other researchers following selection of suitable biomaterial for mouth guards. Orofacial injuries in contact sports (such as boxing, rugby, football, basketball, and karate, etc.) are common events. There are three different types of Mouth Guards available: Boil and bite, Stock, and Custom made. The Boil and bite are made by thermoplastic material and further heated in hot water and placing it in an athlete's mouth by pressure application. The stock type has been found cheaper than the other two. The custom-made type is prepared on the imprints of the mouth of an individual patient. It has great benefits than two and provides greater comfort while speaking but slightly costlier. The MGs are available in different thicknesses according to the type of MGs and patient needs. Thickness carries an important role in fabricating MGs. Thickness affects comfort, breathing, speech, and shock absorption capabilities during activities. But there is still no specific thickness or material prescribed carrying good comfort and provides better protection from impact. It is still expected to conduct extensive impact studies on varieties of materials, combinations of available materials and also varieties of Biomaterials available for MGs to verify suitability being optimum one. EVA MGs, polycarbonate foam, polycarbonate-EVA Sandwich, polystyrene-polyolefin copolymer, new-generation polyolefin self-adapting MGs, Corflex have been seen to be the biomaterial choice for mouth guards. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Contemporary studies on suitability of biomaterials for mouth-guards

Fruit classification is essential in various industrial settings, such as factories, supermarkets, and other places. Fruit classification may also be beneficial to persons with unique nutritional needs who utilize it to choose the proper fruits. Manual sorting was formerly used for fruit classification is time-consuming and requires continual human presence. Many fruit classification machine learning techniques have been proposed in the past. Deep learning may be a powerful engine for generating actionable results in today's reality because of its detection and classification abilities. As a result, a convolutional neural network was employed to construct an effective fruit classification model. It makes use of the fruits 360 dataset, which contains 131 different fruit and vegetable varieties. In this paper, we used three fruits, divided into three categories: good, raw, and damaged. The model was made in Keras. It had been trained for 50 epochs and had a 95% accuracy rate. © 2021 IEEE.

Fruit Quality Recognition using Deep Learning Algorithm

The paper contains the experimental investigations on the pressure drop for the two phase flow in the flow boiling of refrigerant with the insertion of twisted tape in the horizontal circular tube. The Pressure drop analysis, based on data using the twisted tape is performed using the refrigerant R-407C in a horizontal tube with the inner diameter 13.4mm and 2m long. Twisted tapes with twist ratio 9, 14 are used for the predictive results. The experimental investigation was carried out with the operating condition: i)Refrigerant mass flux:100-350?kg m-2s-1 ii) heat flux: 0-10 KWm-2 iii) evaporating pressure 3-8 bar iv) evaporating temperature -15 to 15 °C v) vapor quality 0.05-0.9. The available literature was consider for the comparison of experimental and predictive pressure drop. It showed that the Kanizawa and Ribatski proposed pressure drop correlation is suitable to use, present data base 99% of the error band with ±30 %. © 2021 Author(s).

Pressure drop prediction in flow boiling of R-407C in two phase flow using twisted tape insert in horizontal tube

This research presents numerical investigation of pipe heat exchanger with twisted tape inserted inside and helical fins on outside pipe surface. Various configurations were modelled based on the twist pitch (p) inside the pipe and fin twist pitch (P) over outside of the pipe. The fin twist pitch P (P = P, 2P/3, P/2) on the pipe outside and the inserted tape twist pitch p (p = p, 3p/2, p/2) inside the pipe was varied in the investigation. The hot fluid (water) passes inside the pipe, while the cold fluid (water) passes on the outside of pipe in counter flow direction. The Dittus-Boelter correlation was used for validation. For smooth pipes and the proposed heat exchanger with twisted tapes and helical fins, numerical results were compared. It was found that in inside and outside flows, twisted tape formed longitudinal vortex that helped to increase fluid mixing, thus being higher than that of smooth tube heat transfer rate. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical investigation of heat exchanger with inserted twisted tape inside and helical fins on outside pipe surface

With the growing population, the amount of waste generated by the public also increases drastically. Without a proper solution, waste is being thrown by passersby in open areas in the public. This leads to the accumulation of waste in random areas and it becomes tedious to clear up later on. This also becomes a growing hazard for the environment and the living organisms. It inhibits the growth of flora and fauna and becomes a breeding ground for numerous diseases and pests. This has a direct effect on the health of the population and may lead to permanent damage to the earth. This should hence be controlled as soon as possible to avert immense consequences. In today's world, many systems are being IoT automated. This helps reduce the amount of human effort that is required to operate and maintain systems which in turn reduces human error. With the involvement of IoT, a mass amount of data is also being produced in real-time and the proper interpretation of this data should be done. An interface that has ways to interpret and depict this data is very useful. This will help interpret and analyze the data and conclude various inferences that help in decision-making and future development. This interface should be simple and user-friendly so that people can operate it with minimal requirements or qualifications. This system provides a solution to waste management wherein the citizens of the country are encouraged to throw waste in the waste bins through incentivized technology. The users can find out suitable locations to throw away their waste using IoT components embedded in the dustbins that indicate the status of the dustbins in the locality and also calculate various other data. The Raspberry Pi enables the data to be collected which can then be sent to the cloud to be further processed over the cloud server. This data is then administered by the admin who then takes the appropriate decisions on when to deploy the garbage collecting trucks when suitable. © 2021 IEEE.

IoT based Incentivized Tech Bins for Smart Cities

Manufacturing compound weirs for exact discharge measurement has been a challenge, according to studies so far. The length of the weir crest (L), weir height, and weir width all affect the efficacy of compound broad crested weirs as flow monitoring devices. As a result, the flow characteristics of a given flume are determined by changes in weir geometry, particularly the discharge coefficient (Cd), which varies proportionally with the h/L ratio. For varying h/L levels, many researchers have maintained an average range of Cd. The experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations for measuring discharge by compound broad crested weir are presented in this work. Validation in the results is achieved using CFD FLOW 3D software. For enhanced accuracy in free surface simulations, the model uses the renormalized group (RNG) approach with the volume of fluid (VOF) method. Laboratory models were employed in an attempt to analyse and validate the CFD model. The model is fabricated using PVC material first and later resorted to additive manufacturing for targeting accurate discharges. The shape of the compound broad crested weir was modified to achieve constant Cd by comparing three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics models to experimental measurements. The performance of the CBC weir for precise measurement of a wide range of discharges is confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental measurements, with a reasonably constant design input value of discharge coefficient of 0.6. When compared to empirical methods, CFD-based weir geometry optimization produces more exact model predictions. Moreover, manufacturing this optimized model with 3D printing technology using Poly Lactic Acid plastic material has validated the weir performance with accurate estimates between theoretical, experimental and CFD outputs. © 2021 All rights reserved, Legal Deposit.

Performance enhancement in discharge measurement by compound broad crested weir with additive manufacturing

Cognitive computing is an intelligent system that converses with and mimics the human being in a natural form by learning at scale, reasoning with purpose. Cognitive computing is the third era of computing and now cognitive computing has attracted considerable attention in both academia and industry. Machines and humans’ intelligence gets combined to solve the most complex problems of the world. Complicated problems can be solved by computing framework without intervention of humans. Natural language processing with emotion analysis, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, neural networks are building blocks of cognitive computing process to tackle problems as the way human beings do. Nowadays, advance technologies adapt cognitive computing in many areas to assist human experts in smart decision making for the betterment of businesses. Current technology expectations are to make human life better and to help them work in better ways. Nowadays, there is explosive data growth, business conditions are also changing rapidly so intelligent, hassle-free, and enhanced interactions amongst human beings and technology can be effectively addressed by cognitive systems. AI is in use in many apps like the Alexa: Amazon voice assistant, Netflix and Amazon algorithms which recommend the next to watch or buy. Some examples of personal assistants that uses cognitive computing are Alexa, Siri, Google assistant, and Cortana. Advancement of technology and its adoption in the public and private sectors will greatly affect the future of cognitive computing due to technology evolutionary paths and trends. Cognitive systems must be adaptive, interactive, iterative, and stateful and contextual in commercial and widespread applications.
