An exoskeleton is a wearable electromechanical structure that is intended to resemble and allow movements in a manner similar to the human skeletal system. They can be used by both disabled and able people alike to increase physical strength in carrying out tasks that would be otherwise difficult, or as a rehabilitation device to aid in physiotherapeutic activities of a weakened body part. This paper intends to introduce a voice-controlled upper body exoskeleton for industrial applications which can aid workers wearing it by reducing stresses on their arms and shoulders over longer periods and add up to 20kg more strength in lifting applications. The 3D design, calculations and considerations and load analysis are presented along with brief results of a basic prototype model of the exoskeleton.

PurposeLife cycle cost (LCC) analysis is one of the key parameters in designing a sustainable product or system. The application of life cycle costing in the manufacturing industries is still limited due to several factors. Lack of understanding of LCC analysis methodologies is one of the key barriers. This paper presents a generalized framework for LCC analysis of repairable systems using reliability and maintainability principles.Design/methodology/approachThe developed LCC analysis framework and stochastic point processes are applied for the analysis of a typical computerized numerical control turning center (CNCTC) and governing equations for acquisition cost, operation cost, failure cost, support cost and net salvage value are developed. The LCC of the CNCTC is evaluated for the renewal process (RP) and minimal repair process (MRP) approach.FindingsThe LCC analysis of the CNCTC reveals that, the acquisition cost is only 7.59% of the LCC, whereas the operation, failure and support costs dominate and contribute nearly 93% of the LCC. The LCC per day for RP requires additional US$ 1.03 than that for MRP. The detailed LCC analysis of the CNCTC identifies the critical components of CNCTC and these components are: spindle motor, spindle motor cooling fan, spindle belt, drawbar, spindle bearing, oil seals, hydraulic hose, solenoid valve, tool holder, lubrication pump motor system, lubrication hose, coolant pump motor system, coolant hose, supply cables, drive battery.Originality/valueThe developed framework of LCC of a repairable system can be applied to any other repairable systems with the appropriate modifications. LCC analysis of CNCTC reveals that the procurement decision of a product or system should be based on LCC and not only on the acquisition cost. The optimum utilization of consumables such as cutting tools, coolant, oil and lubricant can save operation cost. Thus, use of high-efficiency electric motors and the usage of recommended consumables can prolong the life of several components of a system. Therefore, due consideration and attention to these parameters at product design stage itself will decrease failure and support cost and ultimately its LCC.

Life Cycle Cost Analysis of a Computerized Numerical Control Machine Tool: A Case Study from Indian Manufacturing Industry

To produce casting with efficient use of material, energy, lead time and manpower is very essential to sustain in foundry industry. Mould with dense cast cavities or less number of cavities may lead to more solidification time, poor mechanical properties and defects like shrinkage, misrun and cold shut. It is proposed to design mould layout with selection of suitable combination of mould size and multiple number of cavities based on temperature distribution and solidification time which results in optimization of casting yield.Casting simulations are carried out for casting mould with single cavity based on mould size and variation of cavity –wall distance for Al-alloy component in green sand mould result in finding of minimum cavity wall gap. Double and multiple cavities moulds are simulated based on cavity-wall distance value and variation of cavity-cavity distance along with temperature distribution, solidification time and defects if any in cast part results in computing minimum cavity-cavity distance. Applying this in mould layout design, it leads into optimum mould layout and casting yield. AutoCAST-X1 simulation results are validated by experimentation for LM4 alloy cast in sand mould allocated with thermocouples and data acquisition system.

Optimization of Casting Yield in Multi-cavity Sand Moulds of Al-alloy Components

Concept of Green communication is emerged from negative impact of wireless communication on the environment. Green communication through green networking can be implemented for making cellular network energy efficient. Green network system can be designed by using energy efficient networking approaches with minimum usage of radio resources. Observations from the recent studies suggest that a base station is the principal contributor of the energy consumption in cellular network. This paper presents a brief survey of different types of base stations and various methods to enhance the energy efficiency of a cellular network base station. Lastly, this paper is focusing on a brief introduction of power saving algorithms. © 2019 IEEE.

Energy Efficient Cellular Network Base station:A survey

This article describes a comparative study of surfaces of lead zirconate titanate ceramic and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite materials. In the present study, abrasive water jet machining technique is used to machine ceramic and composite materials. Major process parameters namely stand-off distance, water pressure and traverse speed are considered. The experiments are designed by using response surface methodology. After machining, surface roughness of the machined samples is measured by surface roughness tester. The significance and influence of process parameters are studied by performing analysis of variance. It is observed that water pressure, stand-off distance and traverse speed are significant parameters in machining of lead zirconate titanate ceramic and water pressure and traverse speed are significant parameters in machining of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite material. It is observed that increase in water pressure and decrease in stand-off distance decreases surface roughness in machining of ceramic material. The surface roughness is reduced from 3.189 to 2.010 μm. Increase in water pressure and decrease in traverse speed results in decrease in surface roughness in machining of composite material. The surface roughness varies between 2.392 and 3.998 μm. Further, the machined surfaces of ceramic and composite materials are examined by using scanning electron microscope to study the microscopic features of the machined surfaces. It is observed that machined surfaces of ceramic and composite material reveal three distinct regions of surface roughness. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Comparative study of lead zirconate titanate ceramic and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite surfaces machined by abrasive water jet

Smart technology is being used in every possible field to make our life easier. To connect humans with the virtual world, computing devices like Smart Glasses are vital. Smart Glasses are very useful in medical, entertainment, education, and many other fields. We proposed smart glasses to assist a person with a Monocular vision in carrying out his day-to-day activities. Understanding depth is the challenge faced by such a person. To overcome this problem, we designed glasses using the Convolution Neural Network and YOLOv3. Recording videos and AR are one of the most important features of Wearable smart glasses. Our glasses assist in measuring the depth of objects (Distance between camera and objects) using a camera module and providing real-time support. It will be useful while judging the distance between approaching barriers. In congested or crowded areas, these glasses help individuals to collect the surrounding information by measuring the distance between different objects. © 2020 IEEE.

Smart Glasses to Assist Monocular Vision to Estimate Depth

Background and Objective: Random Black Hole (BH) attack significantly degrades MANET’s performance. For strategic applications, the performance parameters like Packet Delivery Ratio, Routing Overheads, etc. are important. The objectives are: (a) To model random BH attack, (b) To propose a routing strategy for the protocol to mitigate random BH attack, (c) To evaluate and compare the network performance of modified protocol with the standard protocol. Methods: The random BH attack is modelled probabilistically. The analysis is carried out by varying Black Hole Attack (BHA) time as Early, Median, Late occurrences and mix of these three categories. The blocking performance is also analysed by varying the percentages of malicious presence in the network. Normal Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is used to simulate the MANET performance using a typical medium size network. The protocol has then been modified using TrustConfidence aware routing strategy, named as TCAOLSR, with a view to combat the degradations due to the random BH attack. Results: The random behavior of Black Hole attack is analyzed with all the possible random parameters, like deployment of mobile nodes, number of malicious nodes and timing instances at which these nodes change their state. From the results of individual type-Early, Median and Late, it is observed that the TCAOLSR protocol gives stable performance for Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and Routing Overheads (RO), whereas for OLSR protocol PDR gradually reduces and RO increases. For individual and mix type, Average Energy Consumption (AEC) per node increases marginally for TCAOLSR protocol. For the mix type, PDR for TCAOLSR is 40-60% better whereas RO for TCAOLSR is very less compared to OLSR protocol. The efficacy of the TCAOLSR protocol remains stable for different categories of BH attack with various percentages of malicious nodes compared to OLSR with the same environment. Conclusion: Simulations reveal that the modified protocol TCAOLSR, effectively mitigates the network degradation for Packet Delivery Ratio and Routing Overheads considerably, at the cost of a slight increase in Average Energy Consumption per node of the network. Efficacy of the OLSR and TCAOLSR protocols has also been defined and compared to prove robustness of the TCAOLSR protocol. © 2020 BenthamScience Publishers.
