Municipal solid waste management in emerging mega cities: a case study of Pune city

Liquid-crystalline derivative of β-cyclodextrin (BCD) was prepared by covalent linking of monocholesteryl succinate (ChMS) with β-cyclodextrin. To the best of our knowledge, this was first ever attempt so far of its kind, in which BCD has been converted into its liquid-crystalline derivative through covalent linkage of a mesogen. The degree of substitution (DS) obtained was ≈2.00. The product was characterized by various techniques, such as FT-IR, NMR, DSC, hot-stage-coupled optical polarizing microscopy (OPM), microanalysis and chemical methods. Cholesterol-linked β-cyclodextrin (CDCh) derivative was found to exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. The product exhibited birefringence during first heating above 130°C, and it became isotropic at about 180°C, whereas the parent compound BCD decomposed without melting above 250 °C. A comparison of CDCh derivative to similar liquid-crystalline poly-saccharide derivatives is presented. © 2007 The Chemical Society of Japan.

Cholesterol-linked $\beta$-cyclodextrin—a thermotropic liquid-crystalline derivative

Various mesogenic lithocholic acid (LA) derivatives [3-acetyl LA (LAAC); 3-propionyl LA (LAP), 3-cinnamoyl LA (LACin); 3-benzoyl LA (LAB), 3-(4-nitrobenzoyl) LA (LANB); and methyl-3-(3-carboxypropionyl) LA, i.e., LA methyl ester monosuccinate (LAMeMS)] were reacted with hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) to obtain a series of LA derivatives of HEC. These polymers were characterized by the mesogen content, IR, differential scanning calorimetry, and hot-stage coupled polarizing optical microscopy. The degree of substitution (DS) ranged from 0.27 to 1.11. Polymers HEC-LAB (DS = 1.11), HEC-LANB (DS = 0.80), HEC-LACin (DS = 0.76), and HEC-LAP (DS = 0.27) exhibited a mesophase on heating whereas HEC-LAB also showed a mesophase on cooling. The other polymers HEC-LAAC (DS = 0.89) and HEC-LAMeMS (DS = 0.36) did not reveal mesophase formation with either heating or cooling. It is observed that the formation of a mesophase is affected by the type of mesogen that is used rather than the mesogen content of the polymer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Thermotropic behavior of lithocholic acid derivative linked hydroxyethyl cellulose

A series of poly(ester-amide)s based on an ester group containing lithocholic acid derivative [3-(3-car-boxypropionyl) lithocholic acid] and several aromatic diamines (naphthalene-1,5-diamine, 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether, 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane, 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl-sulfone, benzidine, m-phenylenediamine, p-phenylenediamine, and tetraphenylthiophene diamine) was synthesized and characterized by solubility, viscosity, IR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and optical microscopy. The polymers were soluble in most of the organic solvents and had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.21-0.38 dL/g. All the polymers exhibited a nematic me sophase, but only on shearing. Thermal transitions due to mesophase formation were not seen in the differential scanning calorimetry thermograms. However, the liquid crystalline character of the polymers was observed under an optical microscope. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed the maximum decomposition temperature was 390-435°C for these polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Synthesis and characterization of thermotropic liquid crystalline derivative of cholesterol linked $\beta$-cyclodextrin

l-Proline in ionic liquid was employed for Michael addition of ketones to nitrostyrene. Optically active γ-nitroketones were obtained in good yields up to 80%. The reaction offers high syn selectivity (90%). The most striking feature is that the ionic liquid has been found to enhance the enantioselectivity, wherein enantiomeric excess approaches 75%. The system of ionic liquid and catalyst has proved to be an efficient recyclable medium.

Synthesis of cholesterol linked hydroxypropyl cellulose – A liquid crystalline derivative

A series of liquid crystalline derivatives of lithocholic acid were prepared using simple chemical reactions involving the terminal functional group - hydroxyl at C-3 and/or carboxyl at C-24. Thus methyl -3-(3-carboxy propionyl) lithocholate (I), 3-(3-carboxy propionyl) lithocholic acid (II), 3-acetyl lithocholic acid (III), 3-propionyl lithocholic acid (IV), 3-benzoyl lithocholic acid (V), 3-(4-nitrobenzoyl) lithocholic acid (VI), 3-cinnamoyl lithocholic acid (VII), methyl-3-(4-nitrobenzoyl) lithocholate (VIII) and 1,4-bis [cholan-24-methoxy carbonyl-3-oxycarbonyl] butane (IX) were prepared in good yields and characterized by IR, NMR and polarizing optical microscopy. Compounds (I) and (IX) exhibited monotropic behaviour while the others were enantiotropic. Some of the compounds also showed a high tendency of super cooling. Compounds (V), (VI) and (IX) formed cholesteric phase while the remaining compounds displayed smectic phase.

Liquid crystalline derivatives of lithocholic acid

A series of monocholesterylsuccinate (ChMS) derivatives of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) were prepared with degree of substitution ranging from 0.6 to 2.0. They were characterized by ChMS content, infrared spectroscopy, polarizing microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. All these polymers displayed thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior on heating as well as on cooling. The transformation temperature was found to be influenced by the degree of substitution. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
