Gold is one of the most preferred forms of investment among Marwari businessmen. They invest in both physical and non-physical form of gold. Through, this paper, attempt was made to find the investment preference of Marwari businessmen of Guwahati city towards physical and non-physical form of gold. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources to derive a suitable conclusion. Gold Bar, Coins, Jewellery, Gold ETF, Gold Account, Shares of Gold Mining Companies etc were the key determinants of the study. The study evidenced that 70 % of the Marwari businessmen of Guwahati city preferred physical form of gold over non-physical form of gold investment and 14 % of the businessmen preferred both the forms of investment.

Investment Preference for Physical and Non-Physical Form of Gold : A Study on Marwari Businessmen in Guwahati City

Background: Delayed discharge is a frequent issue in majority of the hospitals as discharge Turn Around Time (TAT) for insured patients is higher than uninsured patients. The present study was conducted on insured in-patients to identify the predictors of discharge delays. Second, the impact of TAT of various steps of discharge process was analyzed on the overall discharge TAT. Finally, the intermediate TATs having highest predicting effect on the overall TAT were identified. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done on insured in-patients of a corporate hospital in Pune city from May to July 2015. TAT of the six steps of discharge process and the overall TAT was tracked and analyzed across Length of Stay (LOS) and discharge type using independent t-test. The six TATs were analyzed for predicting effect on overall TAT using correlation and linear regression. Results: The mean discharge TAT for insured patients (n = 443) was 390 (±122.03) minutes. Intervening TATs for submitting discharge summary to TPA department and the final bill approval from insurance company had highest predicting effect on overall TAT through statistical analysis. Discharge TAT did not vary significantly for planned/unplanned discharge but significantly increased by 1 hour for high LOS patients (p-value < 0.001). Conclusion: Discharge delay for insured patients is a common phenomenon. Hospitals and insurance companies must make combined efforts to control the delay. Further the delay from hospitals must be checked by timely submission of discharge summary and required reports as well as sending a quick reply to the generated queries.

In the context of the scope, time, cost and quality constraints, failure is not uncommon in project management. While small projects have 70% chances of success, large projects virtually have no chance of meeting the quadruple constraints. While there is no dearth of research on project risk management, the manifestation of barriers to project risk management is a less dwelt topic. The success of project management is oftentimes based on the understanding of barriers to effective risk management, application of appropriate risk management methodology, proactive leadership to avoid barriers, workers' attitude, adequate resources, organizational culture and involvement of top management. This paper represents various risk categories and barriers to risk management in domestic and international projects through literature survey and feedback from project professionals. After analysing the various modelling methods used in project risk management literature, interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis have been used to analyse interactions among the barriers and prioritize them. The analysis indicates that lack of top management support, lack of formal training and lack of addressing cultural differences are the high priority barriers, among many others.

Analysis of interactions among barriers in project risk management

Introduction: Medical devices in hospital Intensive Care Units (ICUs) constitute a major investment center. Repair/replacement costs due to mishandling causes revenue drains which are largely avoidable. This study identifies the causes, cost incurred, lag time due to breakdown of medical devices in ICUs due to mishandling and training needs of ICU staff. Methods: This observational study was conducted in a 550-bed hospital in Pune from Jan'2015-May'2016. Records of machine breakdown reports maintained by biomedical department were analyzed for cost incurred due to repair or replacement of devices/accessories/parts. Reasons for mishandling were enquired through questionnaire and short interviews of ICU nurses and biomedical staff. Machine breakdown due to unavoidable incidents were excluded. Further, we prepared Instrument handling guidelines; proposed an ergonomically sound patient bed area; and conducted training of ICU nurses. Subsequently a post training assessment was done. Results: More than INR 4, 66, 000/- worth of accessories/parts/devices were replaced due to device mishandling. Monitors and syringe pumps were most prone to breakdowns due to mishandling. The average time lag for solving a breakdown problem was 24 hours (minimum=5 minutes, max=11 days, 3 hours). The leading causes for mishandling were ignorance, carelessness, lack of training, improper ergonomics and improper placement of devices, stress and fatigue. Post training assessment showed that mishandling incidents reduced to less than 50%. Discussion & Conclusion: Regular training of ICU staff and incorporating ‘Instrument handling guidelines' as a part of induction program for new staff will reduce device mishandling. Unplanned expansions should be avoided and patient bed area should be properly planned.
