Nanotechnology opens up new possibilities for food innovation at an incredible rate, yet new technology needs evaluations of both potential negative impacts and numerous good effects. We aimed to cover some of the latest breakthroughs in nanotechnology and their application to food processing in this overview. Applications of nanoparticles in the food sector are growing rapidly. Nanoparticles (NPs) play a significant role in enhancing food quality by protection and preservation and are preferred over traditional preservatives. In this work on organic and inorganic nanoparticles in various forms such as single and multiple metal oxides, polymeric nanocomposite, nanocapsules, etc., as well as various methods of their preparations are discussed. Nanoparticles in food are currently most explored for their antimicrobial applications; factors affecting their antimicrobial potential, their antimicrobial mechanisms, and laboratory methods applied to evaluate antimicrobial potentials are also discussed. Various properties of NPs in relevance to antimicrobial activities and methods used for their characterization are also discussed. Antimicrobial NPs used for the purpose in various ways such as active packaging, mixed in food, incorporated in edible film and coating, etc. discussed. In the current state NPs used in the food industry, have various concerns such as safety, and regulatory policies relevant to preparing, processing, packaging, and consumption are discussed. NPs do possess some functional properties and harmful effects as well in this relevant future perspective of antimicrobial NPs in food and their other applications explored in current work. Various aspects of the most intensively studied NPs as an antimicrobial in food technology such as silver oxide, and zinc oxide, are discussed. © 2022

An overview of antimicrobial nanoparticles for food preservation

One of the most important problems that the world is currently facing in terms of its impact on the environment is figuring out how to properly manage textile effluents. Photocatalysis has been shown to be successful in the removal of intractable chemicals and is regarded as a viable wastewater treatment technology. This work focused on the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine-B (RB) in an aqueous solution, as well as the photocatalytic behavior of niobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) as a photocatalyst was tested. It is important to note that good photocatalytic efficiency is highly dependent on the operating conditions. There are several process parameters that influence RB photocatalytic degradation, including the amount of photocatalyst (Nb2O5) used, the concentration of RB at the start of the reaction, and the pH of the solution optimized under visible-light irradiation. According to the findings, the conditions in which the greatest amount of RB was degraded were those in which the concentration of the catalyst was 10 mg/l, the dosage of the catalyst was 1 mg/l, and the pH was 11. The results also revealed that after utilizing the catalyst three times in a row, catalyst efficiency was maintained, and the degradation rate was maintained at a greater level. © 2022 The Authors.

Niobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) as an efficient photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine-B

One of the major problems faced by the oil industry is the problem of unwanted water production. High rates of unwanted water production in a well can make the well uneconomical and reduces the good lifespan. The paper studies the problems faced by a field experiencing a large amount of unwanted water production in the majority of its wells. The data gathered from one of the Indian Western Offshore Oil Fields have been analyzed to identify the problems faced in several wells. Also, the initiatives taken by the company to control high water cut has been discussed. Understanding the water shut-off methods used for mitigating the problem of high water cut and their efficiency, the availability of various Inflow Control Systems for well completion to prevent unwanted water production is studied. Studying the performance of these systems from numerous case studies and literature surveys for mitigating unwanted water production, the paper provides a complete strategy for water control in horizontal wells for different reservoir properties and for future redevelopment plan of the Indian Western Offshore Field followed by the conclusion. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

Completion Strategy for Water Control in Horizontal Wells of an Indian Western Offshore Oilfield: A Case Study

Water-flooding is a necessity for improved extraction of crude from the existing reservoir. However, scale deposition is a challenge to be mitigated due to incompatibility among injected and formation water during water-flooding operations. Sulfates and carbonate scales of barium, calcium, and strontium are commonly encountered in diversified oil fields. Such scale deposition inside the pores of reservoir rock leads to a reduction in effective permeability, which ultimately affects the fluid flow and, thus, results in a decrease in overall productivity. Hence it is important to predict the impact of scale deposition on permeability reduction. In the present study, a generalized model using a multivariate regression approach was developed to estimate the reduction of permeability due to barium, calcium, and strontium sulfate scale deposition based on important variables, namely temperature, pressure, and brine concentration and pore volume injected. Experimental data of sulfate scale deposition in Malaysian sandstone reservoirs from published literature were utilized for modeling purposes. The developed simple generalized model can predict final permeability caused by scale deposition with good accuracy (<10 % relative error) compared to experimental data. Moreover, a sliding window regression approach was used to improve its performance. Prediction of Reducing Permeability due to Scale Deposition during Water-flood-ing Operations of Crude Reservoirs

Environmental pollution has been determined to be the root cause of a large number of deaths and illnesses around the world. Heavy metals in wastewater have been a major problem in recent years due to their hazardous effects. Human health, living resources, and ecological systems are all at risk because of the increasing levels of hazardous metals that are being released into the environment as industrial wastes. Heavy metals in wastewater are strictly regulated by environmental organizations and authorities due to their harmful health impacts and toxicological properties. As a result, adequate safeguards must be taken, and technologies for detecting, quantifying, and removing heavy metals from effluent waterways must be developed. The most prevalent method for removing heavy metals from wastewater is adsorption. As a result of recent advances in adsorption technology, it's a potential wastewater treatment method. In recent years, the utilization of agricultural waste materials has grown in popularity. Due to their physicochemical and nontoxic properties, agricultural wastes have the potential to be employed as adsorbents. A low-cost adsorbent made from agricultural waste is one of the most common applications for agricultural waste products. This review provides an overview of applications for various agricultural waste materials added to their ability to absorb heavy metals. The different properties of agricultural waste materials are also summarized. The review article also covered the treatment procedure's effectiveness, difficulties, effects on the environment and public health, and other elements. The process parameters, the adsorption isotherm, and the adsorption kinetics are all thoroughly discussed. In this review, it has been shown that several heavy metals can be effectively removed from wastewater using inexpensive adsorbents. © 2022

A review on application of low-cost adsorbents for heavy metals removal from wastewater

Air pollution from the large-scale combustion of fossil fuels has prompted researchers to look for alternatives. A viable alternative to the use of petroleum diesel must be technically possible, commercially viable, environmentally friendly, and affordable. Through a variety of techniques, biodiesel can be produced from renewable and low-grade sources, and it has the potential to become a viable alternative energy source. Cost-effective and environmentally friendly catalysts are expected to be frequently used in the biodiesel production process for the transesterification of several feedstocks. There have been several investigations into the conversion of the oil into biodiesel by homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysis and new heterogeneous catalysts are constantly being tested. Separation and leaching in harsh reaction conditions are two of the many challenges associated with the employment of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts respectively. Because of its great efficiency, researchers are increasingly interested in applying nano-catalysts for the generation of biodiesel. The development of nano-catalyst applications is the primary factor driving this growth. A review of several nano-catalysts utilized for biodiesel production from different feedstocks, as well as an evaluation of the major operational variables that influence biodiesel production and the accompanying obstacles in the transesterification process, are presented in this article. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Ceramic membranes (Al2O3/TiO2) used for separation glycerol from biodiesel using response surface methodology

Green synthesis process has been developed to produce MgO nanoparticles using wet chemical method. In this process, Madhuca longifolia (M. longifolia) flower extracts has been used as a reducing and stabilizing agent and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is used as a metal precursor. This study exhibits the effect of varied concentrations of metal precursors and flower extracts on the shape and size of the MgO nanoparticles. FTIR, UV vis spectroscopy, SEM, EDS and HRTEM analysis have been carried out to identify the functional groups involved in the reduction process, confirmation of MgO nanoparticles, morphological and elemental analysis of the MgO nanoparticles respectively. The results confirmed the presence of spherical MgO nanoparticles decorated over the surface of MgO microclusters. It is observed that the varying concentration of flower extracts and precursor have a profound effect on morphology of the nanoparticles resulting in the decrease in cluster size with the increase in extract concentration. The nanoparticles were also tested for the presence of antibacterial activity against the bacterial species of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. © 2022 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Development of MgO nanoparticles via green synthesis at varying concentrations of precursor and mahua flower extract

The complex interactions of magnetic field with crude oil have always posed challenges in its commercial implementation as a wax deposition control method. In the present work, changes in viscosities of three crude oil samples subjected to varying magnetic fields and time of exposure were measured. The resultant data along with the data from literature was used to develop phenomenological models. These models related the final viscosity with the wax %, magnetic field, time of exposure and wax appearance temperature. The model parameters suggested that the amount of wax and the exposure time were the governing factors for viscosity reduction. Such models would help in the tuning of magnetic field strength and exposure time to obtain a desired viscosity reduction. This would help in the design of better oil transportation systems, thereby generating confidence in the method. © 2022
