Slider-Crank Four-Bar Mechanism-Based Ornithopter: Design and Simulation

In engineering practice, mechanical vibration plays a very important role, such vibrations can lead to negative issues. The vibration is caused due to various factors like restrained machine vibration which can lead to wear and tear or damage of the equipment. Vibrating machinery can create unnecessary sound, cause protection issues and lead to degradation. It can also cause machinery to use more power and may damage the condition of the product. In order to reduce the negative effect of vibration a design is proposed such that it will not only reduce the vibration to a certain extent but also support the human body while using equipment like jackhammers, heavy drills, etc. The Scissor Like Structure (SLS) can be applied in many other engineering applications to achieve higher quality vibration control. In this article a SLS model is designed with the help of CATIA. Various parametric influences are considered and after taking suitable dimensions the model analysis is done. The calculations were plotted with the help of MATLAB. And, considering all the negative issues caused by vibration a user-friendly exoskeleton is designed. With help of this innovative design simulation, experiments are performed. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of this model and also eliminates the chances of failure. At the end the natural frequency of the SLS is calculated. © 2022

Design and analysis of SLS mechanism for hand operated vibrating Machines

Currently, various high lift devices are being employed in the general aviation industry. The performance of these high lift devices depends on various parameters, among which the geometrical or positional parameters are one of the most important as their influence is very prominent on the aerodynamics of the wing. Hence, attention is to be given to the optimization of these devices to increase their efficiency and performance. This article focuses on the optimization of high lift devices such as leading edge slats and trailing edge flaps. The optimization is achieved with four defined configurations for each high lift device and then compared their results with each other to find the best configuration; here the best performance refers to maximization of section coefficient of lift. A two-dimensional CFD (computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis performed on best three element airfoil using SolidWorks Flow Simulation tool with variation in aerodynamic parameters as lift and pitching moment. The obtained results have an accuracy of 1.09% for maximum coefficient of lift and 0.4% for landing condition respectively. Thus the optimized NACA2412 three-element airfoil gives good aerodynamic performance. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aerodynamic effects of leading edge (LE) slats and slotted trailing edge (TE) flaps on NACA-2412 airfoil in prospect of optimization

In recent years due to environmental issues, have a great demand to search for alternative energy sources. The high demand of fuels in transportation and industrial sectors strengthen the identification of alternative fuel sources. In this regards biodiesel and its different blends (corrosive environments) with petro diesel, can be considered a prompt substitute for petro diesel. But the use of biodiesel possesses several limitations, such as metal surface degradation, auto oxidation and instability of fuel properties. Automobile industries are also facing a major problem related to compatibility of automotive components with biodiesel and its blends. The majority of engine components manufactured by different metals and non-metals which gets affected due to contact with biodiesel. Current research used nodular (spheroidal graphite) cast iron which is widely used for manufacturing of engine parts like piston and piston rings. For automotive components palm biodiesel (B100) is more corrosive as compared with petro diesel (B0). Therefore, this research was carried out on nodular cast iron used for piston ring in different corrosive environment of fuel such as petro diesel (B0), palm biodiesel (B100) and their respective blends (B20, B10 & B5). The corrosiveness behavior of nodular C.I. with different blends was tested using static immersion test followed by Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) & Tafel plot. Electro chemical degradation studies were characterize a nodular cast iron metal surface by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersion Spectrography (EDS) after immersion test. Results conclude palm biodiesel is more corrosive to nodular C.I. than petro diesel and with different blends under above testing methods.

Effect of Heat Treatment on Corrosion Behavior of Nodular (Spheroidal Graphite) Cast Iron Using Electrochemical Tests in Biodiesel Environments

Biodiesel as an alternative fuel is overcoming to replace petroleum diesel partially. The tribological performance of biodiesel is crucial with respect to application in automobiles. Cast iron is widely used in for manufacturing of many automobile engine parts such as piston, valves, piston rings, etc. This research article evaluates the wear behavior of spheroidal graphite cast iron which is used for the manufacturing of piston rings with respect to different blends of biodiesel. Many experiments were carried out under metal to metal contact and lubricated sliding condition on, pin on disc wear testing machine. This shows the metallographic changes due to wear damage. Previous experimental result shows that friction coefficient and wear loss decreases significantly due to decrease in lubrication percentage of palm biodiesel. The test parameters used under this work were 8 kg, 10 kg, 12 kg, 14 kg and 16 kg loads for 1 h, at speed 300 rpm and at ambient temperature. Wear behavior of spheroidal graphite cast iron is evaluated using five different blends of biodiesel, B0 (100% petroleum diesel), B5 (5% biodiesel), B10 (10% biodiesel), B20 (20% biodiesel), B100 (100% palm biodiesel)).The period for which cast iron can sustain is determined by its wear and abrasion resistance. Due to formation of lubrication layer of ester compounds in palm biodiesel wear resistance of nodular cast iron increases as biodiesel percentage increase in the blend. Therefore, high wear resistance is critical for ensuring a long life of the cast iron in biodiesel environment. The results showed that the B100 has higher coefficient of friction and lowest surface roughness and wear volume loss as compared with petroleum diesel (B0). It also shows that wear and friction decrease as percentage of biodiesel increases. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations used to analyze the structure and surface morphology. Wear scar diameter (WSD) was investigated using optical microscopy in tested specimen. The wear rate was found to be more in petroleum diesel compared with palm biodiesel than other blends.

Wear Behavior of Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron in Biodiesel Blends

Single Lap Joints are used extensively in the aerospace industry due to their lower weight and absence of stress concentration due to drilled holes. However, their lesser strength remains an important limitation. Different modes of failures have been reviewed in this article. The bond strength of a single lap joint can be varied by varying its overlap length, while, the strength does not strictly increase with increasing bonding length. Rather, it increases up to an optimum value and decreases further. This optimum value was obtained, which is found to be in agreement with previous studies in this regard. The surfaces of the bonded aluminum plates were modified by generating notch shaped pattern on bonding area. Due to notch pattern of bonding, the bond strength increases up to 75° notch angle and then decreases with further increase in the notch angle. The experimental results of bonded joints without notch also were obtained by software analysis. Maximum strength of joint length reached at optimum length and optimum notched surface pattern.

Variation of Adhesive Strength in Single Lap Joint (SLJ) with Surface Irregularities

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) like drones and quadcopters have revolutionised flight. They help humans totake to the air in new, profound ways. The military use of larger size UAVs has grown because of their ability to operate indangerous locations while keeping their human operators at a safe distance. Here quadcopter as a small UAV is discussed.It is the unmanned air vehicles and playing a predominant role in different areas like surveillance, military operations,fire sensing, traffic control and commercial and industrial applications. The main objective of the paper is to learn thedesign, construction and testing procedure of quadcopter. In the proposed system, design is based on the approximatepayload carry by quadcopter and weight of individual components which gives corresponding electronic componentsselection. The selection of materials for the structure is based on weight, forces acting on them, mechanical propertiesand cost.

Quadcopter: Design, Construction and Testing

Bent tubes have a lot of various industrial applications. It is required for the transportation of fluids or gases. It also used as construction elements in all industries like car, aviation and shipbuilding industry, refrigeration and air conditioning technology, furniture industry. The objective of this paper is to understand the material deformation occurring during the bending of the tube bends and study the effect of parameters viz. bending radius, bending angle, springback on ovality of tube during bending operation. Tube undergoes certain deformation during the bending process which introduces various defects in the tube bends. This will lead the acceptability of tube bends for certain application. For better understanding the approximation of the defect it is necessary to reduce it at the manufacturing level itself. The testing uses different bending die to differ the bending radius and tests are performed at different bending angle. These whole data has been used to find the different defects and also to find the stress induced in the bends using FEA software package.

Parametric Analysis of Tube during Bending Operation

Today various alternative fuels are used due to new emission norms and environmental factors. Biodiesel and its blends are one of the alternative fuel used nowadays due to its low sulphur content. Automobile metals like copper, aluminum, cast iron etc. are more resistive to corrosion in petro diesel but more corrosive in biodiesel and its blends. So study corrosive nature of biodiesel is important for longer life of these automobile metals and its components. Piston rings made of nodular cast iron are always in contact with burnt and unburnt fuel in engine during working. In present study, a corrosive characterization of nodular cast iron is investigated by giving a proper heat treatment to it and static immersion test in biodiesel blends. Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersion Spectrograph and optical microscope are used for analysis of present investigation study. Results show that change in basic microstructure of metal can increase resistance to corrosion due to change in phase of metal.

Corrosion behavior of nodular cast iron in biodiesel blends

Adhesive bonding is widely used for sheet metal joining in automotive, marine, airplane, Space industries. Single lap joints are considered as a good category joint for sheet metals. The purpose of study was to find proper method of design, analysis and testing of single lap joint in various material and loading conditions. Here, study on single lap adhesive joint is to be done considering various factors which affect the loading capacity of single lap adhesive joint the structure of bonded parts is very important in order to obtained required strength different bonded areas can have different strength. And the strength of adhesive joint is also depends upon the surface roughness and its holding time. Study involve use of isotropic and orthotropic material as adherend same specimen size. Study gives some basis information about design of joint and FEA with using various analysis softwares to see the nature of changes in the joint. Validation of FE analysis will do using experimental testing of joint on Universal Testing Machine with study of surface roughness. Then possible results occurred due to different loading conditions are given for study. Adhesive joints compares with other fasteners taking its advantages and disadvantages in various applications.
