As a fluid flows through a subsea pipeline, a cooling process occurs due to heat loss to the surrounding seawater. Wax may precipitate as a solid phase when the bulk temperature drops below the Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) and wax can deposit on the pipe wall. Untreated wax deposition leads to reduced flow area and to prevent blockage of the pipe a wax deposition model is used to predict the amount of wax to expect. Turbulent flow, single-phase experiments were performed with a waxy gas-condensate. The Hydro model, which takes into account asymptotic growth, seemed invalid for these experiments. The RRR and the Matzain model are available in the transient thermo hydraulic simulation software. Simulation studies have been carried out in order to find out the pressure and temperature drops in the pipeline under various operating scenarios and different ambient temperatures. Scenarios such as steady state flow (CTF Line / SRJ GGS), wax deposition and pigging, Skin Heat Tracing system (SHTS), alternate pumping of oil and water, higher dispatch temperature and additional line from field RRJ to field SRJ are developed. Results of wax deposition and pigging are discussed in this paper.

Modeling and Simulation of Wax Deposition in Crude Oil Pipeline

One of the major problems confronting the petroleumindustry is the untimely blockage of oil due to deposition of heavyorganics (asphaltene, resin, paraffin wax) present in the oil. Inorder to overcome these problems Flow assurance is employed.Flow assurance is a relatively new term in oil and gas industry.Flow assurance is successful operations that generate a reliable,manageable, and profitable flow of fluids from the reservoir to thesales point. Taking into consideration the above factors the scopeof the paper would be to study the existing system from (EarlyProduction System) EPS-I to EPS-V 8” trunk pipeline & tosuggest remedial flow assurance measures. Simulation studieshave been carried out on Pipesim Software in order to find out thepressure and temperature drops in the 8”X50 km EPS-I to EPS-Vpipeline. Results conclude that heating the crude up to 65oC isimperative before pumping at all 3 installations. The crude oilfrom EPS-IV,EPS-III,EPS-II is required to be reheated at EPS-Ibefore pumping to EPS-V. It will assist in transportation fromflow assurance point of view due to better shear as well as betterheat retention in the line.

Oil pipeline wax deposition is one of the major problems facing in the crude oil transportation flow line from the offshore to onshore through pipe. The wax deposition occurs because of the crude oil fluids temperature is decrease during the transportation process and cause solidification of wax components. Wax deposition in oil and gas production is one of the major flow assurance challenges the industry faces today. Wax deposition is mostly a temperature driven process which means that subsea pipelines are especially vulnerable. Wax precipitates from oil when it is cooled and the wax may deposit on pipeline walls. Wall deposits can lead to severe problems and need to be removed in an efficient way. It is difficult to perform accurate deposition measurements on real pipelines. The present study intends to use MATLAB simulator to predict wax deposited in a onshore pipeline using MATZAIN model. It provides idea of how wax is being deposited in pipeline and also suitable suggestions are also provided.

Prediction of Wax Deposition in pipelines using MATLAB Simulator: Case study of ABC field pipeline

In the present study, degradation of petroleum industry wastewater has been investigated through laboratory experiments by employing heterogeneous photocatalytic process. A photocatalytic reactor was used for the advanced oxidation. The industrial wastewater was characterized. Photocatalytic activity of semiconductor such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been investigated. An attempt has been made to study the effect of process parameters through amount of catalyst, and operating pH on photocatalytic degradation of petroleum industry wastewater. The experiments were carried out by varying pH (2-11), amount of catalyst (0.25-1.5 g/L). Optimal suspended catalyst concentration, fluid pH and temperature were obtained at amounts of near 1 g/L, 3 and 50 °C, respectively. The maximum rate of degradation was observed in acidic medium at pH 3 and maximum reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 60%. © 2015 Scientific Publishers.
