The performance of the central solar receiver should be properly examined for an effective design of a solar power or solar heating system. The performance of solar receiver is affected by three parameters. These are the amount of solar radiations, the state of the heating medium and the temperature of the surrounding air. Also, while evaluating the performance of a solar receiver, the ambient weather conditions should be taken into account. As a result, when a large amount of direct light strikes a solar receiver, the power generated increases as well. In contrast, as the amount of direct light falling on the solar receiver diminishes, so does the amount of electricity generated. As a result, it is generally understood that on sunny days, the performance of the central solar receiver will be higher, while on overcast days, the performance will be reduced. The solar receiver collects heat from diffused or reflecting light (when the sun is obscured by clouds) and absorbs reflective light from glossy or light-colored surfaces. The experimental results reveal that solar radiation collection performance is dependent on climatic circumstances; thus, when installing a solar receiver, it should be suitable for the specific region depending on weather conditions. © 2022 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An experimental study of solar receiver under cloudy weather conditions

Currently, various high lift devices are being employed in the general aviation industry. The performance of these high lift devices depends on various parameters, among which the geometrical or positional parameters are one of the most important as their influence is very prominent on the aerodynamics of the wing. Hence, attention is to be given to the optimization of these devices to increase their efficiency and performance. This article focuses on the optimization of high lift devices such as leading edge slats and trailing edge flaps. The optimization is achieved with four defined configurations for each high lift device and then compared their results with each other to find the best configuration; here the best performance refers to maximization of section coefficient of lift. A two-dimensional CFD (computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis performed on best three element airfoil using SolidWorks Flow Simulation tool with variation in aerodynamic parameters as lift and pitching moment. The obtained results have an accuracy of 1.09% for maximum coefficient of lift and 0.4% for landing condition respectively. Thus the optimized NACA2412 three-element airfoil gives good aerodynamic performance. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Shape Memory Alloy Actuators: A Review

Bent tubes have a lot of various industrial applications. It is required for the transportation of fluids or gases. It also used as construction elements in all industries like car, aviation and shipbuilding industry, refrigeration and air conditioning technology, furniture industry. The objective of this paper is to understand the material deformation occurring during the bending of the tube bends and study the effect of parameters viz. bending radius, bending angle, springback on ovality of tube during bending operation. Tube undergoes certain deformation during the bending process which introduces various defects in the tube bends. This will lead the acceptability of tube bends for certain application. For better understanding the approximation of the defect it is necessary to reduce it at the manufacturing level itself. The testing uses different bending die to differ the bending radius and tests are performed at different bending angle. These whole data has been used to find the different defects and also to find the stress induced in the bends using FEA software package.

Parametric Analysis of Tube during Bending Operation

Disease mobility is curse of human life, both physically and mentally. Particularly, old age faces difficulty in walking, climbing stairs, etc. As per UN world population prospects, the elder population in worldwide will reach up to 2.1 billion in 2050 (around 20%), which is more than double the population in 2017. It is observed that the majority of infrastructures in rural, urban and semi urban areas of developing nations are not equipped with elevators. Individuals have no alternative than utilizing stairs. The fundamental issue comes with an age where an incompetent body enforces to avoid climbing of any type. Literature supports different assisting tools for stair climbing. The use of external power source for driving such tools is a common practice. In this paper, the self driven mechanism is proposed to facilitate climbing. The system stores the energy while regular walking and the same can be utilized whenever required on the need basis. The natural walking style of the individual and its feel is preserved while designing the mechanism. The design further shows scope for similar applications. The detailing of design and the analytical formulations are presented to support the argument.

Spring Supportive Mechanism to Assist Stair Climbing

This paper presents on Casting as a manufacturing process which is used for making components of complex shapesof molten metal in mass production. Casting may experience many different defects such as porosity, incompletefilling, etc. Improving and maintaining the casting quality becomes an important task. Gating/riser system design iscritical to improve the casting quality. Different gating systems have different effects on the quality of castings. Twogating systems namely stepped and tapered runners were used to cast strip samples with different thicknesses byCO2/silicate process using sand grain sizes of AFS 151 and 171. Mould coating has effects on the properties of thinwall ductile iron. To access this, half of the moulds were coated while the rest were left uncoated. Molten metal withthe carbon equivalent of 4. 29% was prepared and poured at 1450º C. The results obtained by this experiment arestudied and thus, the effect of different gating systems is studied. Also, the mold filling affects the gating design.During light metal casting processes, the quality of a casting can be considerably affected by the pattern of moldfilling. In this study, the effect of gating design including gate geometry and size on the flow pattern was presented bypouring molten metal of aluminum alloy A413 into a sand mold. The experimental results indicate that the pattern ofmold filling is greatly influenced by the size and geometry of the gate and the ratio of the gating system.

Effects of Gating System on the Mechanical Properties & Quality of Metal Castings

Power boosting technology of the diesel engine withno increase in the engine size has been developed with theevolution of the turbocharger which forces more air in theengine which increases more fuel injection and hence morepower output. The turbocharger increases engine efficiency byusing the energy of exhaust gases in the form of pressurizedgas and heat, to drive the compressor. Most of the turbochargerpreviously used was of waste-gate type having drawbacks likevolumetric efficiency limit, fix geometry. Hence the VariableGeometry Turbocharger (VGT) is used. It provides variablearea of inlet orifice. It provide small orifice area for the exhaustgas during resupplying to input air due to which more boostcreate at lower engine speed and provides large orifice areaduring higher engine speed for higher exhaust pressure createdduring nozzeling operation. This study shows how the variablegeometry obtains by the adjustable vanes which act as thenozzle around the central turbine and connected to actuator.Variable geometry turbocharger increases expansion ratio,output power, output torque. This study describes the improvedfull load performance of 2.5 liter DI diesel engine and itscomparison with the waste-gated turbocharger. Within thesame limitation of a maximum cylinder pressure as well asexhaust smoke levels, the low speed torque could be enhancedat its maximum and also reduces the exhaust smoke andimproves the fuel consumption.

Effect of Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) on Diesel Engine efficiency

Alertness during driving is a key aspect. Even a small distraction for the driver may lead to genuine mishaps. The possible reasons can be obstacle, inadequate vehicle control system or human reflexes (eg shock) during sudden distraction. Therefore" Active" and" Passive" systems for vehicle control play a significant role in automotive safety. In this paper, we have discussed an active control technique to prevent the vehicle from crashing. Three different cases of vehicle speed are considered. The presented technique is designed to evaluate the possibility of collision for both front and rear side. The control action will be taken for safe and smooth driving under different situations like parking, urban driving and highway driving.

ACTIVE SAFETY CONTROL TECHNIQUE TO PREVENT VEHICLE CRASHING

Helical compression spring is used in multiple applications. It is mainly used for energy storage, shock absorber or damper, motion transfer etc. It is observed that the axial force applied on the helical spring do not transfer completely at the other end. Some amount of forces transferred in lateral direction. In this paper, the study of lateral forces is presented. Different possible causes of the generation of lateral forces are explained. Four cases of helical compression spring such as regular, conical, barrel and hourglass are presented. The regression model demonstrates the percentage of lateral force against axial load.
