Project-based learning (PjBL) is a variation of Problem-Based Learning where learners are provided with specifications for a desired end product and the learning process is more oriented to following appropriate procedures leading to successful project. Technical competition such as Robocon poses a similar challenge to the students as encountered in a typical PjBL exercise with one unique differentiator, namely, an element of competition. We make and test the hypothesis in this paper that this differentiator adds a great value to PBL/PjBL in terms of outcomes attained and skills acquired. Research questionnaire for testing this hypothesis was designed and is shared. Survey results show that competition boosts the level of student engagement in the learning experience and participant’s employability potential. It also helps in attaining crucial program outcomes such as solving complex engineering problems, being able to engage in self-learning and working in a multidisciplinary team. The study also offers an insight in how learning in a team happens when the team is focused on winning a competition. The survey results from this case study make it clear that competition-based PjBL has great potential to prepare industry-ready students in terms of their technical aptitude as well as positive attitude. The paper makes a strong argument to find ways in which element of competition can be added to regular PjBL exercise to boost its established outcome attainment potential. © 2019, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. Adding element of competition to multi-disciplinary PBL: Case study of robocon competition

Cardiac event detection is one of the essential steps in cardiac signal processing, analysis and disease diagnosis. Complete morphology of cardiac waves (P–QRS–T) extracted from the location of R-peak is helpful for feature extraction of many applications related to cardiac diseases classification. Therefore cardiac event detection is a prerequisite for reliable cardiac disease diagnosis, and hence it should be robust and time-efficient so that it can be used for real-time signal processing. This work proposes a novel method for R-peak detection using curvelet transform (CT). It demonstrates the use of curvelet energy with an adaptive threshold to estimate the boundaries around R-peak. The exact R-peak locations are then detected from the input signal with the predefined estimated boundaries. The proposed method is evaluated and analysed with all 48 records from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The experimental analysis result yields an average sensitivity of 99.62%, average positive productivity of 99.74% and average detection error rate of 0.6%. The results obtained have higher than or comparable indices to those in literature. Thus, the proposed system yields high accuracy, low complexity and high processing speed.

Cardiac events detection using curvelet transform

Vehicle safety is the most important strategy used to address the international and national road casualty reduction targets to achieve a safer road traffic system. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by human mistakes such as lack of concentration, misbehavior and distraction. The vision based lane detection system is a valuable way to protect single vehicle from accident. In this paper a lane detection method for detecting the lanes accurately is proposed. Also the canny algorithm is determined as the edge detection algorithm and Hough transform method is selected as the efficient way to detect lanes. To meet the real requirement, the region of interest (ROI) is defined to reduce noise properly for accurate results and to enhance the processing speed.

Straight and curve lane detection system for car safety using hough transform and sobel operator

Detecting a moving object is very crucial in surveillance application. Many algorithms have been developed for object detection, recognition and analysis. The algorithms involve the trajectory of detected object by locating position in each captured image. In the proposed work a system is implemented to detect foreground object in any environmental condition and the model is implemented on FPGA board. Real time foreground object detection is a very complex task. Proposed system detects object by background subtraction algorithm based on dynamic thresholding. Background subtraction algorithm detects moving object by subtracting current frame from reference background frame. The system is simulated using MATLAB and implemented on FPGA board. © 2019 IEEE.

Detection of Moving Object Based on FPGA

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is made up of a network of many compact and constrained sensors. Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) was designed particularly for the constrained nodes and networks in WSNs as a unique web transfer protocol by the Internet engineering task force (IETF) developed. Time synchronization of these low power sensor modules is in high demand. This paper proposes a time synchronization module for CoAP and focuses on the energy efficiency of the WSN for CoAP using NS2, which will help to reduce the overall network overhead and minimize the energy consumption. © 2019 IEEE.

Total blood volume (TBV) analysis is key to manage the patients with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) cardiac surgery. Circulation of blood volume (CBV) is essential because the processes that maintain the connection between red cell volume (RCV), plasma volume (PV) and CBV may not be measured. The differences in significant surgery in patients do not always work efficiently and changes in CBV and need intensive care. The visible physiological clinical shock require urgent methods to regulate CBV because the current method is complicated and involves intervention.The current approaches to estimating blood quantity are labor-intensive, complex, and time-consuming. Severe depletion of quantity leads to selective vasoconstriction masking. Last decade, science has introduced different techniques for estimating blood quantity. So the scheme that can offer a precise assessment of blood quantity in the human body needs to be implemented. In this paper, a system is proposed where color flow imaging is used to measure TBV and CBV. The videos used are Doppler 2d echocardiogram which shows the color Doppler flow in the heart. The method used in this paper can be an alternative to the present methods of calculating the TBV and CBV as it is easy to measure the parameters with the help of Doppler velocity.

Oil spill is considered as one of the biggest ecological disasters due to the scale of the impact it has, on the ecosystem being affected. Offshore oil spills have proven to be a global concern for marine ecosystem and appropriate measures for their control, prevention and removal of contaminants must be considered as top priority. This paper entails a detailed study of the various available oil spill clean-up techniques and looks at its advantages and limitations. Further, a grading system for all these methods based on oil type, treatment volume, weather conditions, complexity, water turbulence, time required for results, their environmental impact, cost and efficiency is prepared. In the case of a spill, oil dispersion behavior acts differently for different kind of fluids on sea water depending on their properties, with the effect of turbulence being one of the critical factors. This paper also focuses on the study of different behavior of crude oil and gasoline on sea water using a commercially available CFD (computational fluid dynamics) tool which utilizes more accurate and relevant mathematical formulations. A multiphase oil spill model has been developed to simulate dispersion of oil spill. A consistent Eulerian approach and Navier-Stokes equations is applied across the model, and the diffusion is employed to simulate oil dynamics in the water. The used Multiphase Oil Spill Model takes advantage of recent developments in the areas of CFD. Copyright 2019, Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Modelling of Critical Parameters of Oil Spill

The effects of rice straw ash (RSA) and microsilica (MS) on durability properties (water absorption and chloride ion penetration) of M40 grade Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) were studied. Ten concrete samples were prepared by partially substituting cement with RSA and MS in various proportions. A significant reduction was observed in the water absorption and chloride ion penetration in concrete samples with an increase in the curing age as well as with an increase in the proportion of MS and RSA. The maximum reduction in water absorption and chloride ion penetration was observed in R2M3 (10% RSA and 7.5% MS) as compared to control concrete (R0). The analytical relationships were developed between the above-mentioned parameters and curing age of concrete. A linear equation was established between the initial and secondary rate of water absorption of concrete and also between the chloride ion penetration of concrete at 10–20 mm and 25–35 mm depth. Both these equations were applicable to all the concrete samples of this study. Predictive charts were generated between the above-mentioned parameters and days of curing in water. © 2019 The Authors

Evaluation of water absorption and chloride ion penetration of rice straw ash and microsilica admixed pavement quality concrete

Image super resolution refers to increasing the physical dimensions of image to overcome resolution limitations originated from certain imaging sensors such as light sensitivity of sensor, environmental lightning conditions, physical size of sensor and also of each pixel w.r.t the sensor. With the help of sparse code and the dictionary it is possible to reconstruct good quality image with high resolution. Training images are used for obtaining the sample patches which are used for obtaining coefficients of the dictionary. Therefore the process of image super resolution is carried from sparse representation of low resolution image patch generating image of high resolution. Although method is effective, it is slow due to need of processing large number of image patches. Using LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) approximation which is one of the regression analysis method where the approximation of solution is performed. The implementation is done on MATLAB (CPU) and NVidia CUDA platform. Here NVidia GPU which increases the speed of patch processing thereby overall improvement time consumed to run the algorithm. The algorithm is evaluated using performance parameters SSIM, Running Time, RMSE, PSNR and Entropy. © 2018 IEEE.
