In our day-to-day life Emotions play an vital role. They help in identifying a human state of mind. Information about the human state of mind can significantly help in human-machine interaction and brain-computer interface. Some of the existing researchers have used speech, text, gesture or facial expressions for emotion recognition. However, these factors vary across culture and nation. Because of which, it is difficult to detect emotions more accurately. Hence, present work considers EEG signals for emotion recognition which not only ignores external factors but also helps to detect real emotions arising directly from our brain. A benchmark DEAP (Dataset for Emotion Analysis using Physiological signals) dataset is used for emotion investigation. A novel feature extraction technique called Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (FCC) is proposed to extract features from DEAP dataset. FCC technique is compared with Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) on DEAP dataset for feature extraction. These extracted features are then classified into two emotional states-happy and sad using K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) classifier. The selection of most appropriate and reliable method of feature extraction greatly helps for accurate classification. Number of experiments was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of feature extraction techniques. The experimental results show that KDE gives 80% accuracy and FCC outperforms it by achieving 90% accuracy on DEAP. © 2017 IEEE.

A novel approach for analyzing human emotions based on electroencephalography (EEG)

Due to increase in population coupled with mining, extraction, and use of various metals as different industrial and household materials, the load of toxic metal pollution in the environment is increasing. Toxic metals can be hazardous even at very low concentration. When they get into water supplies and aqueous environments the health of plants and animals as well as humans can be impaired. The demand of chromium has been increasing globally because of its extensive use in various metallurgical, chemical, and leather tanning industries due to its various physico-chemical properties. The adsorption of toxic metals is strongly dependent on pH, temperature, contact time, and initial adsorbate concentration. The studies on adsorption were conducted by varying various parameters such as contact time, amount of adsorbent, temperature, and agitation speed. The increase of adsorbent dose provides more surface area for adsorption hence increased the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. Agitation speed has little effect on adsorption. Experimental data for the adsorbent was fitted to different isotherm models such as Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was employed in order to evaluate the optimum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. It was concluded that adsorbent prepared from Peas Shell can be used for removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. © 2018 by Apple Academic Press, Inc. All rights reserved.

With the areas like business, transportation, medicine, energy, agriculture and others, the Internet of Things also finds a major implication in education. A university campus can be considered as the ideal place for the creation of a smart environment. The Sectoring Scheme is used in MARS approach for dividing the sensor network into different sectors. It improves reliability of an application or network. The working of both the approaches is explained in algorithmic form. The mathematical modeling of LEACH and MARS protocol is discussed.

PurposeThe paper presents reliability, maintainability and life cycle cost (LCC) analysis of a computerized numerical control (CNC) turning center which is manufactured and used in India. The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical components/subsystems from reliability and LCC perspective. The paper further aims at improving reliability and LCC by implementing reliability-improvement methods.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a methodology for the reliability analysis based on the assessment of trends in maintenance data. The data required for reliability and LCC analysis are collected from the manufacturers and users of CNC turning center over a period of eight years. ReliaSoft’s Weibull++9 software has been used for verifying goodness of fit and estimating parameters of the distribution. The LCC of the system is estimated for five cost elements: acquisition cost, operation cost, failure cost, support cost and net salvage value.FindingsThe analysis shows that the spindle bearing, spindle belt, spindle drawbar, insert, tool holder, drive battery, hydraulic hose, lubricant hose, coolant hose and solenoid valve are the components with low reliability. With certain design changes and implementation of reliability-based maintenance policies, system reliability is improved, especially during warranty period. The reliability of the CNC turning center is improved by nearly 45 percent at the end of warranty period and system mean time between failure is increased from 15,000 to 17,000 hours. The LCC analysis reveals that the maintenance cost, operating cost and support costs dominate the LCC and contribute to the tune of 87 percent of the total LCC.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed methodology provides an excellent tool that can be utilized in industries, where safety, reliability, maintainability and availability of the system play a vital role. The approach may be improved by collecting data from more number of users of the CNC turning centers.Practical implicationsThe approach presented in this paper is generic and can be applied to analyze the repairable systems. A real case study is presented to show the applicability of the approach.Originality/valueThe proposed methodology provides a practical approach for the analysis of time-to-failure and time-to-repair data based on the assessment of trends in the maintenance data. The methodology helps in selecting a proper approach of the analysis such as Bayesian method, parametric methods and nonparametric methods.

Reliability analysis of CNC turning center based on the assessment of trends in maintenance data

A mathematical model for a linear compressor with valves is developed. A linear compressor consists of an oscillating motor and a piston rigidly coupled to it. The mathematical model deals with the dynamic equation of a linear compressor consisting of inertia, motor force, and damping. It also solves the electrical circuit equation to estimate the current flowing through the motor circuit. The model considers the dynamic operation of suction and discharge valves. The refrigerant properties are estimated by interfacing the programme with REFPROP to predict the cylinder instantaneous pressure and temperature. Finally, the model predicts the net cooling capacity, compressor input power, and COP for the given compressor geometry. The mathematical model is validated with the experimental results reported by Lee et al. (2004. ‘Linear Compressor for Air-Conditioner.’ L. G. Electronics, international compressor engineering conference, Purdue University, C047, 1–7). Parametric analysis of the compressor is done by varying parameters like input voltage, refrigerant, and superheating temperature of the refrigerant. Results generated by the mathematical model are presented and discussed.

Performance predictions and parametric analysis of valved linear compressor using mathematical model

Linear compressor has emerged as high performance and high efficiency compression technology with its low noise, high efficiency and unique modulation method. The present work reported in this paper is specific to the selection of parameters for flexure bearing used in linear compressor. This paper utilizes FEM as tool to find the equivalent stress and stiffness. In the process of design, selection of optimized parameters is one of the most important steps. The optimized parameters are one which will serve the desired objective like performance and service life at minimum cost. The main objective of this paper is to investigate effect of parameters on flexure bearing to enhance its performance and improve upon the service life of the flexure. Performance of the flexure, service life of the bearing can be enhanced by achieving lower operating stresses and higher stiffness as per the requirement. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.

Parametric Analysis of Flexure Bearing for Linear Compressor

Agriculture growth is the key component in socioeconomic growth of our country due to liberalization and globalization. Gradually with significant increase in technology, advanced telecommunication services assist plant disease treatment at remote locations. Earlier systems were designed for either monocot or dicot plant family disease detection. The paper proposes an integrated approach for monocot and dicot plant disease detection and treatment along with precautionary measurement through smartphone and image processing techniques. The paper mainly focuses on plant disease detection technique based on integrated approach of K-means segmentation algorithm and SVM Classifier. The proposed and developed approach gives 83 % accuracy for plant diseases recognition. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2017.
