Biofuel from Cellulosic Agricultural Waste

Viscoelastic and dielectric properties of composites with polyvinyl chloride as major matrix constituent, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as polymeric plasticizer, and wood flour (WF) and fly ash (FA) as filler have been studied. The effect of variation of WF, FA, and EVA on storage modulus E', loss modulus E", and glass transition temperature, Tg has been evaluated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Effect on permittivity ε' and conductivity is evaluated using dielectric analysis. The results show considerable influence of constituents of the composite on the properties evaluated. DMA shows that WF contributes to an increase in Tg, E', and E" and a decrease in loss tangent, tan δ. The FA content has insignificant effect on these properties. Increasing WF content increases ε'. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers.

Characterization of highly filled wood flour-polyvinyl chloride composites: Dynamic mechanical and dielectric analysis

In this paper, we present a novel method for automatic recognition of isolated Marathi handwritten numerals. Chain code and Fourier Descriptors that capture the information about the shape of the numeral are used as features. After preprocessing the numeral image, the normalized chain code and the Fourier descriptors of the contour of the numeral are extracted. These features are then fed in the Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classification. The proposed method is experimented on a database of 12690 samples of Marathi handwritten numeral using fivefold cross validation technique. We have obtained recognition accuracy of 98.15%.

Marathi Handwritten Numeral Recognition using Fourier Descriptors and Normalized Chain Code

Crosstalk and power penalty analysis for optical code-switched static wavelength routing wavelength-division multiplexing nodes of a generalized multiprotocol label switched (GMPLS) network is presented. The performance of the system is analyzed for coherent crosstalk, end-to-end bit error rate, and the code length. We introduce a new approach to estimate the blocking probability in crosstalk-impaired GMPLS networks. Packet error rate is estimated for an increasing traffic condition. A well-known Erlangs traffic model is used to examine the performance of the system. © 2010 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Analysis of crosstalk and modeling of possible number of routing stages for optically transparent wavelength-division multiplexing nodes of generalized multiprotocol label-switched networks

Hybrid composites with expanded graphite (ExGr) as the second conducting component in PPS-7 wt% graphite have been prepared by powder mixing method. The percolation threshold in the hybrid composites lies at 0.25wt% ExGr. Addition of 1 wt% ExGr in PPS-7 wt% graphite increases through plane conductivity by six orders compared to 0 wt% ExGr addition. The ac conductance study reveals that insulatorsemiconductor transition occurs at higher loading of ExGr in hybrid composites. For 0.75 wt%ExGr addition in PPS-7 wt% graphite, the charge transport occurs by hopping mechanism. Expanded graphite sheets predominantly occupy intergraphite spaces in hybrid composites. Impedance measurement has been carried out to evaluate interfacial capacitance which increases with enhanced ExGr loading. Polyphenylene sulfide-graphite hybrid composites: Charge transport and impedance characteristics

Recent research indicates that multimodal biometrics is the way forward for a highly reliable adoption of biometric identification systems in various applications, such as banks, businesses, government and even home environments. However, such systems would require large distributed datasets with multiple computational realms spanning organisational boundaries and individual privacies. In this paper, we propose a novel approach and architecture for multimodal biometrics that leverages the emerging grid information services and harnesses the capabilities of neural network as well. We describe how such a neuro-grid architecture is modelled with the prime objective of overcoming the barriers of biometric risks and privacy issues through flexible and adaptable multimodal biometric fusion schemes. On one hand, the model uses grid services to promote and simplify the shared and distributed resource management of multimodal biometrics, and on the other hand, it adopts a feed-forward neural network to provide reliability and risk-based flexibility in feature extraction and multimodal fusion, that are warranted for different real-life applications. With individual autonomy, scalability, risk-based deployment and interoperability serving the backbone of the neuro-grid information service, our novel architecture would deliver seamless and robust access to geographically distributed biometric data centres that cater to the current and future diverse multimodal requirements of various day-to-day biometric transactions. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010.

Risk-based neuro-grid architecture for multimodal biometrics

Polypyrrole (PPy) was chemically functionalized with 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin iron(III) chloride (FeTPPCl) with special interest on noxious carbon monoxide (CO) gas in ppm level. Controlled functionalization of PPy was achieved with incorporation of various concentrations of porphyrin. The resulted semiconducting material was well characterized by different techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, GFAAS, XRD, and EDAX. The functionalized polypyrrole material on interdigitated electrode was experienced an immediate increase in resistance when exposed to carbon monoxide gas at very low concentration. The CO gas interacted very fast with the FeTPPCl functionalized PPy at room temperature (RT) and then slowly saturated. The response of these materials was not unidirectional, but reverses to the original resistance level when CO was removed from the test chamber. The highest response factor (ΔR/R0 × 100) and lowest response time (t50) obtained are 12 and 169 s, respectively. An optimum level of doping (1 mol% of FeTPPCl) was established for the highest sensitivity and the detection level is as low as 100 ppm. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CO sensor based on polypyrrole functionalized with iron porphyrin

Incorporation of polyaniline (PANI) in epoxy type powder coating formulations has not been attempted earlier. Using specific grade of PANI with low doping, it can be incorporated in epoxy powder coating formulations by twin screw extrusion process. The powder formulations were deposited on steel substrates by electrostatic spray coating at -60 kV and baked at 140 °C for 20 min. These were extensively tested for corrosion resistance by exposure to hot saline conditions followed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and also salt spray testing. PANI incorporated coatings showed no deterioration even after 1400 h of hot (65 °C) saline treatment. The coatings intentionally scratched also exhibited self healing property and there was no rust formation even after prolonged exposure to hot saline conditions. These results could be explained on the basis of additional crosslinking due to PANI, as confirmed by DSC results, which gave rise to improved barrier property and self healing was associated with the scavenging of ions by PANI which prevented corrosion of the underlying substrate. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Epoxy powder coatings containing polyaniline for enhanced corrosion protection

This paper proposes a new method of reducing the energy dissipation below that of quasi-adiabatic circuit. Adiabatic logic style is proving to be an attractive solution for low power digital design. Many researchers have introduced different adiabatic logic styles in last few years and proved that these are better than CMOS as far as power dissipation is concerned. In this paper, we present control circuits for sub-adiabatic energy dissipation and show that the energy dissipation of the quasi-adiabatic circuit can be further reduced if we control bulk-to-source voltage, VBS appropriately. All the inverter circuits are designed using 180nm technology in Cadence design environment. \textcopyright2009 IEEE.

Achieving sub-adiabatic energy dissipation by varying VBS

Demands for low power electronics have motivated designers to explore new approaches to VLSI circuits. The classical approaches of reducing energy dissipation in conventional CMOS circuits include reducing the supply voltages, node capacitances and switching frequencies. Energyrecovery circuitry, on the other hand, is a new promising approach to the design of VLSI circuits with very low energy dissipation. Such circuits achieve low energy dissipation by restricting current to flow across devices with very low voltage drop and by recycling the energy stored on their capacitors. This paper analyzes the performance of Pass Transistor Adiabatic Logic (PAL) against that of static CMOS. A standard 2X2 Barrel Shifter is used as the benchmark circuit for comparison due to its modular design. The analysis is carried out in cadence design environment using 180nm technology using cell based design approach. The simulation is done at various operating voltages, frequencies and load capacitances for each circuit family and technological node. \textcopyright2009 IEEE.
