The aim of study is to synthesize a biodiesel from soybean oil using ultrasonic process. At present, biodiesel is produced in batch reactors in which the required energy is provided by heating by mechanical mixing. Alternatively, ultrasonic processing is an effective way to attain required mixing providing the necessary activation energy. Ultrasonic is a very desirable tool for producing biodiesel from vegetable oil and animal fats, because it lowers the cost of processing, speeds up transesterification, does not require elevated temperatures, and produces a higher grade of biodiesel. The aspect considered in the research work is to develop and design a methodology for ultrasonic process. Hence, our main aim is to study the effect of ultrasonic irradiation on the production of biodiesel from soyabean oil with homogeneous catalysts (KOH). Different operational parameters affecting the biodiesel yield, including methanol/oil molar ratio, catalyst type and concentration, reaction time, and ultrasound pulsation rate were evaluated

Application of Ultrasound for Synthesis of Biodiesel

In the present study, degradation of petroleum industry wastewater has been investigated through laboratory experiments by employing heterogeneous photocatalytic process. A photocatalytic reactor was used for the advanced oxidation. The industrial wastewater was characterized. Photocatalytic activity of semiconductor such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been investigated. An attempt has been made to study the effect of process parameters through amount of catalyst, and operating pH on photocatalytic degradation of petroleum industry wastewater. The experiments were carried out by varying pH (2-11), amount of catalyst (0.25-1.5 g/L). Optimal suspended catalyst concentration, fluid pH and temperature were obtained at amounts of near 1 g/L, 3 and 50 °C, respectively. The maximum rate of degradation was observed in acidic medium at pH 3 and maximum reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 60%. © 2015 Scientific Publishers.

The depletion of crude reserves and turbulent global and local economy leads to ever increasing prices of petroleum-based fuels. Refineries all across the globe are forced to process heavy crude and high sulfur crude which in effect embraces pollution problems on combustion front unless advanced technologies are implemented. All of these factors point toward the search of sustainable substitutes for conventional energy sources. In this scenario, the prospect of using biodiesel as an environment-friendly and sustainable energy source is very promising. Several countries are opting for a blend of 5-20% of biodiesel with conventional petro-based diesel. In this study, a generalized model is proposed for the prediction of important fuel properties of a biodiesel-diesel mixture. The model utilizes properties of each component along with its fractional composition in the mixture. Performance of the model has been evaluated for various biodiesel-diesel blends, where biodiesel were synthesized from diversified sources namely soybean, sunflower, ricebran, cottonseed oil etc. It has been clearly observed that the developed model is able to predict density, viscosity, cetane number, and pour point quite accurately irrespective of the source of biodiesel. The simple model can be utilized to predict the blending proportions of biodiesel with petro-based diesel in order to meet ASTM specification of the blended fuel. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

Synthesis of biodiesel from low-cost vegetable oil and prediction of the fuel properties of a biodiesel-diesel mixture

This study involves the photo-catalytic degradation of rhodamine-B (RB) employing heterogeneous photo-catalytic process. Photo-catalytic activity of different semiconductors such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) and niobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) has been investigated. An attempt has been made to study the effect of process parameters through amount of catalyst, initial concentration of dye, and operating pH on photo-catalytic degradation of RB. The experiments were carried out by varying pH (2-11), amount of catalyst (0.25-1.5 g/L), and initial concentration of dye (10-50 mg/L). The optimum catalyst dose was found to be 1 g/L of TiO2 and 1.25 g/L of Nb 2O5 for RB at 30 mg/L respectively. The maximum rate of degradation was observed in acidic medium at pH 3 for catalyst TiO2 and Nb2O5 respectively. It was observe that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, is greater than Nb2O 5.

Novel design of laboratory scale photocatalytic reactor for degradation of dyes

Recent literature has demonstrated that on a laboratory scale photocatalysis technology to destroy organic pollutants completely present in water has got great potential. In this paper, a new reactor design simulation of reactor (considering thermal analysis) has been carried out using SolidWorks software. The SolidWorks CAD software is a mechanical design automation application that lets designers quickly sketch out ideas, experiment with features and dimensions, and produce models, simulation and detailed drawings. The operating condition of reactor i.e temperature (min. 25°C and max. 80°C) and 1 atm. pressure. As result shows that, the design of reactor is feasible. A reactor was designed and constructed based on the modelling results, and when experiments were conducted showed very promising results. The new reactor aims at developing a technical solution to the design of a commercial scale photocatalytic reactor.

3D Model design and simulation of photocatalytic reactor for degradation of dyes using solidworks software

The cultivation of algae provides excellent perspectives for renewable energy production and as a source of 'green' products. Algae cultivation can thus contribute substantially to a reduction of CO 2 emissions. This paper describes systems used to cultivate algae from recycle water bottle for biofuel production. For the better quality of Algae cultivation it required a treatment of Nutrients. In this paper we discussed about the construction of Algae bioreactor from recycle water bottle and the treatments of nutrients (Ammonium sulphate, Urea) which required for cultivation of Algae. Result shows that the Algae cultivated from this Algae bioreactor from recycle water bottle is containing large amount of oil than the Algae grow in a rives, wells, ponds etc.

An Algae bioreactor from recycle water bottle for cultivation of Algae

Increase in population coupled with mining, extraction and use of various metals as different industrial and household materials, the load of toxic metal pollution in the environment is increasing. The waste from metallurgical/mining sectors, in general, creates destabilization in the ecosystem, as most of the heavy metal ions are toxic to the living organisms. The demand of chromium has been increasing globally because of its extensive use in various metallurgical, chemical and leather tanning industries due to its various physico-chemical properties. The present paper deals with the adsorption of Cr (VI) using a Prunus Amygdalus (Almond nutshell). The uptake capacity of the present adsorbent was studied as a function of contact time, pH, adsorbate concentration and adsorbent dose. From the time variation experiments, the equilibrium contact time was found to be 6 hr. Cr (VI) uptake capacity of the adsorbent increased with decrease in pH. The maximum uptake capacity of the adsorbent was observed at pH 1.8. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was found to increase with increase in adsorbate concentration, whereas it decreased with increasing in adsorbent dose.
