Seepage is the phenomenon of water infiltrating through a gravity dam's foundation, causing erosion and weakening the dam's construction over time. If not properly managed, this can eventually lead to the dam's catastrophic failure, posing a significant danger to public safety and the environment. As a result, precise seepage prediction in gravity dams is essential for ensuring their safety and stability. This review paper looks at the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for predicting seepage in gravity dams, as well as the challenges and possible solutions. The paper identifies and suggests potential solutions to the challenges connected with using AI for seepage prediction, such as data quality and model interpretability. The paper also covers future research paths, such as the creation of advanced machine learning algorithms and the improvement of data collection and processing. Overall, this review gives insight on the current state of the art in using AI to predict gravity dam seepage and recommends methods to improve the accuracy and reliability of such models. © 2023 The Authors.

A review of artificial intelligence methods for predicting gravity dam seepage, challenges and way-out

The repetitive modelling required for traditional structural design work is a laborious and time-consuming task. Yet, the cost significantly increases due to the wide variety of profiles. It is suggested to use grouping technique along with algorithms to optimize structural elements in order to address these issues. In this paper, two meta-heuristic algorithms viz; Cuckoo Search algorithm and Thermal Exchange Optimization algorithm are employed for weight optimization of FPSO supporting structure. These algorithms identify the structure’s least weight for the offshore floating platform design. The current work suggests a method for FPSO structure design that is reliability-based and optimal. The current study discusses the optimized design of the topside FPSO structural assembly for various load conditions, such as production tank pressure loads, equipment loads, piping loads, electrical and instrumentation loads, girder deformation loads, wind load, and so on. The effects of hull flexibility, as well as wind and motion-induced accelerations, are considered for both Normal Operating and Extreme Operating conditions. The analysis and design optimization are carried out in the STAAD Pro and analytical tool by selecting the least weight as an objective function while adhering to the API design constraints on displacement and stress limits. Module primary structure design can be iteratively “optimized” using the algorithm and stress ratio as described above. By implication, the algorithms, FPSO supporting structure translates into optimal design, resulting in cost savings. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Structural Audit and Assessment of Application of External Post Tensioning Method on Bridge Girder

In the 1960 s, Fuller introduced Tensegrity structures having astonishing appearance. Owing to their light weight and deployability, this form was mainly employed in building deployable space structures, controllable structures, tensegrity robots and few civil engineering structures like towers, large dome structures, stadium roofs, temporary structures and tents. Principally owing to its inherently high flexibility, tensegrity structures have been scarcely employed in civil engineering construction. Current work attempts to design 220 kV Transmission Tower using tensegrity form. Geometry, loading and design details of this tower in traditional form are available in the literature. In the current work, tensegrity form has been employed to replace traditional tower structure. The geometric configurations for tensegrity towers are obtained by Force Density Method through MATLAB programming (by varying parameters like number of layers, height of layer, overlap between layers). The obtained configuration with prestresses is then modelled using commercially available software SAP2000 (ver. 23.3.1) and analysed for pertinent load combinations. To bring the top displacement of tensegrity tower in conformity with code stipulations, tie cables were employed to the tensegrity tower. From the present work, it is evident that usage of tensegrity form to construct transmission tower results in significant reduction of base area with marginal reduction in mass when compared to traditional towers and possibility of incorporating deployability. © 2022

Non-linear geometric analysis of multilayer tensegrity tower

Sustainable building projects gained momentum in the last decade, and the trend continues. It is important to explore the factors affecting the sustainable building delivery process for concentrating on these factors and pace up the sustainability approach. Building information modelling (BIM) has developed as the definitive technology for managing construction projects. BIM technology has features like accuracy and precision that helps in improving the quality of construction. Green building construction methods and Lean construction are the methods that help to improve sustainability and reduce waste generated during construction. In this article, the author would like to propose a methodological framework that comprises BIM, Green building methods, and Lean methods. After implementation author is hoping to optimize resource utilization, monitor, and measure the construction progress and construction payment procedures. The author is believing that after the implementation of the framework, a virtual environment is prepared which brings more accountability in resource usage and tracking of project progress. Work also highlights the differentiating aspects of sustainable building projects regarding project phases and makes recommendations about the timing of services, such as value engineering, constructability analysis, technology integration, and construction management. The author considers one case study of a residential building and prepared a 3D model using BIM. Further, the author put lean tools and LEED-based methodology to produce the standard operating procedure for the case study considered. Then, a virtual environment is prepared using the 3D model in BIM, and the methodology is considered. Sustainable construction by using novel frameworks using BIM, LEED, and Lean methods

Standard structural design work, is a challenging and time-consuming operation. However, the cost increases significantly since there are so many varied blast characteristics. To solve these problems, it is suggested that structural elements be optimised using algorithms. This work employs two meta-heuristic methods to increase the size of concrete frame constructions. These algorithms identify the structures that have the blast design's lowest weight. Meta-heuristic algorithms are used to tackle optimization problems in many disciplines, including computer science and engineering. To optimize the size of concrete frame structures, two population-based meta-heuristic techniques are applied in this study. The Artificial Bee Colony algorithm and the Cuckoo Search algorithm are these algorithms. Optimization is utilised to reduce the weight of concrete frame constructions while still upholding various displacement constraints. The G + 8 model is vulnerable to blast loading with 2.0 tonnes of TNT while being less than 15 m from the detonation area. The choice to employ the blast load in line with IS:4991-1968 was decided. The Nonlinear analysis is carried out using a piece of software named ETABS. The analysis and design optimization are done in the ETABS by choosing the least weight of structure as the objective function. The analytical tool complies with the displacement and drift constraints set forth in the blast design. Multiple "optimizations" of the modules are possible to the procedure. Steel fiber reinforce-concrete (SFRC) is gaining popularity in the construction industry due to its good post-cracking behavior and numerous benefits for strength and sustainability. SFRC is used for various applications, such as tunnel lining segments, cast-in-lining, and sprayed concrete. Accurately determining and utilizing characteristic values is essential for achieving the best material qualities for structural designs employing fiber reinforced concrete. This article proposes a technique for determining the residual strengths of SFRC for 4D and 5D steel fibers with different concrete grades and fiber fractions. The technique defines characteristic values for FRC and provides a detailed methodology to aid FRC contractors and designers. The experimental residual strengths were taken from experimentally notched beams that underwent three-point bending tests, revealing softening and hardening behaviors in the load-cracking ratio curve of the crack. The concrete matrix consisted of hook-end steel fiber. Concrete, steel, and aluminium together account for 23% of all worldwide emissions. Steel fibers for concrete reinforcement are inherently more sustainable than traditional solutions like rebar and meshes, leading to significant CO2 savings up to 35%. Through advanced steel fiber design optimization, thinner but equally durable concrete slabs can be designed with significantly less concrete, steel, and water than conventional reinforcement solutions. By adding high performance 4D and 5D steel fibers, further design optimization can be achieved. Using steel fibers as a reinforcement solution can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of traditionally reinforced concrete, with steel accounting for nearly 19% of emissions share in 1 cubic metre of concrete. Additionally, using steel fibers reduces the amount of concrete required, further dampening the carbon footprint. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into the benefits and characteristics of SFRC and proposes a technique for determining its residual strengths. This information can aid FRC contractors and designers in achieving the best material qualities for their structural designs while also contributing to a more sustainable construction industry. © 2023, Central Board of Irrigation and Power. Determining the Characteristics of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Using 4D and 5D Fiber: A Study on Different Concrete Grades and Fiber Concentrations

The focus of this Paper is on utilizing cutting-edge technologies and techniques to gather comprehensive data, even in challenging environments. The goal is to achieve accurate and reliable measurements in any ground condition, whether it is soft soil, hard rock, or anywhere in between. A good instrumentation program has the potential to change the way we approach subsurface engineering, making it possible to tackle even the most complex geotechnical challenges with confidence. To start with, the Paper dwells upon the basic purpose of instrumentation and the essential attributes of a good instrumentation system. It explains functionalities of the diverse type of instruments deployed in tunnelling. The designers of the instrumentation program may find the discussion quite useful. Elements of a foolproof instrumentation program have been discussed in detail. The Paper highlights the most crucial but commonly ignored aspect of data analysis and interpretation. What is the use of instrumentation if their data is not utilized? The instrumentation program must be able to analyze the data through an on-line Software and present the results in a form that can enable easy interpretation of the results. Instead of long data tables, the instrumentation results must be presented in graphical form. Today’s IT technology has made it possible, as brought out in this Paper. With this perspective, the way instrumentation is looked upon today needs to be changed. Clearly, there is a need to accord instrumentation the attention that it deserves. Finally, typical instrumentation systems have been presented for varying rock conditions. However, it must also be appreciated that in tunnelling we are dealing with naturally occurring unpredictable ground conditions. Howsoever hard one may try; it will not be possible to standardize instrument schemes for different rock conditions.
