Road infrastructure in India is growing speedily. Vision (2030) anticipates a quality, dependable, sustainable, resilient infrastructure, and sound technology. Road infrastructure can be built by using the sustainability concept. A conventional road causes environmental and social issues as well as affects the economy of road infrastructure. To overcome this problem sustainable planning is a very prominent solution. By reviewing research papers of the previous 30 years, life cycle cost analysis seems to be a key method for achieving required growth. Sustainable Project Planning of Road Infrastructure in India: A Review

Vishnugad-Pipalkoti HE Project(444MW) is under construction on Ala-knanda River in Distt Chamoli, in the state of Uttarakhand. This Project will generate 444 MW Power by installing four turbines of 111MW each. The central feature of this project is its 13.5Km long headrace tunnel with an 8.8 m finished diameter. Out of its 13.5 km length,12.3 km is to be bored by using a double-shield TBM of 9.86 m diameter and the remaining 1.2 km to be bored with the help of DBM. The present authors want to highlight the issues and challenges faced during transportation and installation of the TBM and the universal geological surprises faced by the working team after starting the boring and the remedial measures adopted, therefore. The paper also discusses the analysis and design of the large-sized adit bored in the extremely poor rock conditions and the innovative measures undertaken for its construction. © 2023 The Author(s).

Construction of headrace tunnel of Vishnugad-Pipalkoti HE Project (444MW) in extreme geological conditions: Issues and challenges-A case study

23 Majority of hydropower projects in India are in Himalayas which has fragile geology being young mountain. Recent rapid land subsidence in Joshimath has underlined the need of monitoring and controlling the surface settlements in the influence zones of hydropower tunnels projects. In case of shallow overburden surface settlements will have greater impact. Design and construction of underground cavern in hydropower projects or crossover in metro tunnels involves fixing the size, layout and orientation of cavern or crossover, design of rock support, blasting pattern, excavation sequence, rock support, instrumentation etc. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during design & construction phases of shallow depth crossover NATM tunnel at Civil Court Station in Pune Metro project. It illustrates the way the problems of surface settlements due to tunnelling, heavy ground water ingress and natural big cavities partly filled with zeolites were handled successfully. The metro tunnels are designed and constructed at shallow depths for the convenience of the passengers. However, the construction of these shallow tunnels may lead to excessive settlement of the buildings and subsequent damages. Hence, the selection of alignment of tunnel and tunneling method in urban projects is crucial for the success of the underground metro project. The methodology adopted for construction crossover to control the surface settlements and heavy water ingress may be useful for construction powerhouse caverns. © 2023, Central Board of Irrigation and Power. 1Design and Construction of Scissor Crossover Tunnel in Pune Metro Project

The use of steel fiber in the recent past has offered distinct advantages over conventional reinforcement and its acceptance in the design of segmental lining of TBM tunnels has increased manifold. It has emerged as an alternative to traditional reinforcing bars for precast concrete tunnel segments. This paper presents an assessment of the technical viability of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in tunnel segmental linings in the recent past and its current practice in India. The paper discusses the typical information about the SFRC, its advantages, available specific guidelines, general design concept, description of material parameters, tests, and analyses required for the segmental lining design. An analysis of historical information about tunnels built with SFRC shows the typical geometry and reinforcement strategy used in the tunnel design. The paper also presents an assessment of the design approach adopted in one of the ongoing projects in India and discusses the outcome of the results. © 2023, Central Board of Irrigation and Power. Technical Viability Assessment of SFRC Lining Design in India

Nanotechnology opens up new possibilities for food innovation at an incredible rate, yet new technology needs evaluations of both potential negative impacts and numerous good effects. We aimed to cover some of the latest breakthroughs in nanotechnology and their application to food processing in this overview. Applications of nanoparticles in the food sector are growing rapidly. Nanoparticles (NPs) play a significant role in enhancing food quality by protection and preservation and are preferred over traditional preservatives. In this work on organic and inorganic nanoparticles in various forms such as single and multiple metal oxides, polymeric nanocomposite, nanocapsules, etc., as well as various methods of their preparations are discussed. Nanoparticles in food are currently most explored for their antimicrobial applications; factors affecting their antimicrobial potential, their antimicrobial mechanisms, and laboratory methods applied to evaluate antimicrobial potentials are also discussed. Various properties of NPs in relevance to antimicrobial activities and methods used for their characterization are also discussed. Antimicrobial NPs used for the purpose in various ways such as active packaging, mixed in food, incorporated in edible film and coating, etc. discussed. In the current state NPs used in the food industry, have various concerns such as safety, and regulatory policies relevant to preparing, processing, packaging, and consumption are discussed. NPs do possess some functional properties and harmful effects as well in this relevant future perspective of antimicrobial NPs in food and their other applications explored in current work. Various aspects of the most intensively studied NPs as an antimicrobial in food technology such as silver oxide, and zinc oxide, are discussed. © 2022

An overview of antimicrobial nanoparticles for food preservation

Pavement Analysis and Measurement of Distress on Concrete and Bituminous Roads Using Mobile LiDAR Technology

This study’s intention is to investigate the seismic effects on the cantilever balcony (slab) of fifteen-storied (G + 14) rectangular and C-shaped buildings through time-history analysis (THA). For this purpose, to match the target ground motion, considering soft soil and oblique-slip parameters, six-time history functions are used. The buildings are separately modeled with cantilever balconies along the longer edges comprising three types of cases that are balconies on all floors, on even floors and on odd floors. The seismic zone for the specified buildings is taken as Zone V as per the Indian Standard. The buildings under consideration are analyzed with time-history analysis (THA) using ETABS, and the results are evaluated and discussed, focusing primarily on the deflection of the balcony for each type to define the most effectual size of the cantilever balcony for each set of configurations, and the optimum sizes of the cantilever balcony are recommended. The recommended optimum sizes of cantilever balcony help in providing a safe balcony on the respective floor in each case under consideration of the two case-study buildings. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Seismic effect on cantilever slab of rectangular and C-shaped buildings using time-history analysis

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is becoming more popular in the industry. The prospect of lower energy use, lower emissions, and a more usable product appeals to a sector under environmental pressure. WMA is a generic term for a number of technologies that allow the manufacturing of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement material to be mixed and compacted at lower temperatures. WMA is blended and compacted at temperatures 20 to 50 degrees Celsius lower than traditional HMA. This paper presents a laboratory investigation of WMA mixes produced by an additive Sasobit ®. The study also evaluates the effect of addition of Sasobit ® on the rheology of viscosity graded asphalt VG 30. Two different percentages of Sasobit ® were tested with VG 30. Results of binder rheology are presented in this paper. Laboratory study was conducted to investigate the properties of the asphalt mixes affected during development of the mix at lower temperatures. Warm mixes can be successfully created at lower temperatures than HMA mixes, according to the results of the evaluation. From the study of three HMA plants energy savings are found in case of WMA mixes with Sasobit ®. Details about the energy consumed during various processes which occur during production are accounted in the study. It is concluded from the present study that use of Sasobit ® lowers production temperatures by 40 °C, which lead to a savings of about 25% in terms of fuel. © 2023

Effect of Sasobit® as a WMA additive on mix design parameters

According to a survey by Global Data, the size of the Indian construction market was $609.6 billion in 2021 and is projected to increase by more than 6% between 2023 and 2026. However, project delays have a particularly negative impact on the residential sector. The construction industry should minimize activity-related delays to meet these objectives. A project will be deemed successful if it is finished within the allotted time. Researcher indicates that, more than 55% of projects ran over budget and delayed because there was poor coordination and communication across various departments and divisions. Because of the poor coordination and communication project got delayed. Coordination is crucial for reducing delays, and managing activities also guarantees that time is managed. The customer, contractor, and consultant must establish good communication and coordination to maximize project productivity. All employees must be familiar with the project and understand what they are responsible to do and also understands the coordination they are supposed to make. There are some methods like impact-as-planned, collapsed-as-built, time impact analysis, where coordination is not important but these are the methods important for understanding and calculating the delay. While the previous researchers have understood the major problem in the delay on construction site, is the coordination. As the researchers’ research that more than 55% projects get delayed. Coordination is really important for the speedy construction among the different departments in the company. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) can be helpful for coordination and these are not used techniques in the previous construction work. AR enables the visualization and on-site modification of architectural designs. Compared to traditional drawings, the VR model offers a better overview and details of the design. AR and VR will aid designers in visualizing and developing their creativity. Author first selected a case study of a residential project and then created a model using AR and VR for further evaluation. The author will be employing BIM-based models for deploying AR and VR technology. G + 20 residential buildings are taken into account in this.
