Many complexities can be observed in the construction of tunnels for Pune metro (the second-largest city in the state of Maharashtra, India). It inherently involves many risky activities like excavation and lining, transportation of material, scaling and mucking, ventilation, cutter head intervention of tunnel boring machine (TBM) in compressed as well as in open mode, handling of tunnel machinery, working in narrow space, overloading of the crane, temporary segment dismantling, etc. Although tunneling for metro rail is risky, the risk involved is more in the longer tunnels. To save valuable resources and winning the trust of the client, risk assessment for each activity during tunnel construction is crucial. The expository literature review indicates that very few studies are available on risk assessment of each activity of tunnel construction in India using TBM. This study presents a case study on risk assessment of underground construction for the Pune metro. The work provides an insight into risk which occurs during the construction and describes general consideration for the uncertainties during execution. The paper provides the qualification and quantification for the risks in metro tunnel using risk matrix and expected monitory value (EMV) analysis. The risk matrix is the most effective tool for risk assessment and qualitative risk analysis. And EMV is succeeded using recommendations accessible in the literature of domain of risk management. Though it is a straightforward method, it is a productive application for the quantification to accomplish the goals of the metro tunnel project in terms of controlling the time delay and cost overrun as well. After the qualification of the risk process, quantitative assessment can be done for the further elected majors to choose the suitable reaction schemes. Risk Assessment of Pune Metro Underground Construction Using Risk Matrix and Expected Monitory Value

An adsorption process is the most effective technique and used for the elimination or reduction of metal ions from wastewater. However, the process is not economical since the activated carbon used as a sorbent is costlier. Hence investigators are inspecting to identify cost-effective, efficient, locally available adsorbent materials. In this research work, attempts have been made to check the efficiency of powdered orange peel (POP) with powdered activated carbon (PAC) in removing Cu2+ ions from the aqueous solution. Experiments have been carried out using the batch mode method. In this removal process, the influence of various physico-chemical parameters, like pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, Cu2+ ions awareness and adsorbent particle size at the adsorption of Cu2+ ions through each POP and PAC were investigated. Results found out that the 69.75% elimination of Cu2+ ions was determined with powdered orange peel at pH 5, contact time 60 min, adsorbent dose 3.5 g/L and Cu2+ ions concentration of 200 ppm. Whereas, the powdered activated carbon has shown elimination of 77.4% at pH 5, contact time of 45 min, adsorbent dose 2.0 g/L and Cu2+ ions concentration of 500 ppm. An Experimentation on Properties of Geo-polymer Concrete with fibres

Integrating technology in education can be advantageous for universities and help engage better results for students. An understanding of students' perceptions will help identify obstacles and promote online tests at universities, it is, therefore, important to understand from students about their perspective for the online test and paper-based test. To achieve this goal, a 22-item questionnaire was prepared to understand and study the perception of online and paper-based test for university students and was administered to 476 students (379 were male, 96 were female, and 1 were other). The set of research questions comprises – demographic information, students' perception for the paper-based test, and students’ perception for the online test were analyzed through statistical measures like one-way ANOVA, and t-Test with p-value. After careful analysis through various responses across various dimensions, the results of the study indicated that the difference between the perception of students on the paper-based test and the online test is statistically significant. Overall, students' perception of the online test was positive with the mean trend of 3.42. In India, the online test doesn't have a positive approach, universities refrain from online test and continue to make a traditional approach which does not achieve the targeted result. The major concerns highlighted were the technological incompetence of students and teachers alongside distrust in the technology infrastructure. Using our study, universities can identify obstacles, and prepare an appropriate result-driven plan of action for implementing the online test and make easy migration from paper-based test to online test. ©2021 IEEE

Perception of Students in Online Test in Engineering: Case of NMIMS University

Post-earthquake utilities of liquid storage tanks do not need any over emphasis. Liquid storage tanks used in public water distribution system provide water for firefighting and also for drinking and household purposes. Tanks used in industry are equally critical as they contain hazardous liquids and their leakage may lead to catastrophic situation. Thus, seismic safety of liquid storage tanks, which are life line structures, is very important. The prime aim of the present work is to review the sloshing phenomenon studied by various researchers in the past. The study is broadly divided into two parts namely tanks without obstruction and tanks with obstruction and its effects on sloshing parameters. A brief review on sloshing problem in complex tank geometries in form of Intze, elliptical and conical tanks is also presented. The study also presents an overview and development of mathematical formulations to predict the sloshing parameters in form of sloshing frequency, convective mass excited and hydrodynamic pressure profiles which enable present structural engineers in designing earthquake-resistant storage structures. A brief review on modeling circular and rectangular liquid storage tanks using ANSYS software is also presented along with the assumptions and suitable element for modeling. The study also investigates the advantages and disadvantages of the different analysis methods available in the finite element program (ANSYS) to obtain the sloshing parameters. The study concludes that an optimum mesh size as detailed in the present study must be evaluated to determine slosh parameters. An arbitrary fine mesh results in a limited number of modes extracted from the finite element analysis and further gives inaccurate solutions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

An approach to finite element modeling of liquid storage tanks in ANSYS: A review

The paper aims at implementing new pedagogy and assessment practices from rigorous literature survey perusing quality papers and articles. The appropriate pedagogy and relevant assessment always go hand in hand. One cannot achieve effective teaching by compromising the other component. In engineering, pedagogy and assessment play extremely important roles. In recent years, engineering education has lost track of the big picture of what the curriculum has to be. In Computer Science Engineering, the course contents often change according to the demands for new technology in the market. Adhering to this fact, the courses must be designed either practical-based or case study based. Rote teaching-learning methods are not as effective as far as the curriculum design in the computing field is concerned. Cyber Security is one such course where students are expected to learn how to create a protective environment for computing and computing resources. The course must be designed in such a way that, students must learn how to identify the vulnerabilities in computing resources and methodologies to mitigate them. This course aims such that students must learn some popular attacks which help them to identify what are the possible ways from where the attacks could happen. The paper makes use of strategic assessment tools for the Cyber Security course (Taught to post-graduation students) and discusses outcomes through course outcome attainment analysis as per the threshold value of attainment set by the Computer Engineering Department to adhere to the accreditation standards. Through course attainment analysis it is observed that, Viva voce assessment tool is not suitable for evaluation of the course as it does not impose the technical details and working of Cyber Security concepts. The overall attainment was 55.55% which is 15% less than the threshold set by Computer Engineering Department. © 2021 MECS.

Teaching cyber security course in the classrooms of nmims university

Apart from aiding the environment, exploitation of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as a potential substitute for natural aggregates (NA) contributes to a framework of sustainable development as well as helps in maintaining an ecological balance by avoiding fast depletion of natural resources of aggregates. Therefore, in this investigation, the effects of mechanical beneficiation and lime treatment of coarse RCA on various properties of concrete were studied. The demolished concrete was crushed by hammer in size range of 25–4.75 mm, followed by grinding for 3, 5 and 8 min. It was found that 5 min of grinding was more effective based on the degree of success in the optimum removal of adhered mortar. Further, RCA ground for 5 min (MRCA) was graded into two different nominal sizes of 20 mm and 10 mm as per IS 383. Subsequently, MRCA was immersed in a lime solution of concentration varying from 1 N to 2.5 N for 3 and 7 days. These aggregates were termed as ‘LMRCA’. MRCA and LMRCA were used for partial replacement of coarse NA in M40 grade concrete at the rate of 10% up to 40% by weight. Various tests like compressive and flexural strength test and water absorption tests were performed. It was found that up to 30% NA can be replaced by MRCA or LMRCA in recycled aggregate concrete. But, the concrete admixed with LMRCA showed better properties than the concrete admixed with MRCA. Moreover, these experimental results were verified by employing microstructural and mineralogical analysis. In concrete admixed with LMRCA, the normality of lime solution was more dominant than the duration of LMRCA immersion in a lime solution. Also, the improvement in strength and water absorption of concrete admixed with LMRCA was proportional to the normality of lime solution. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Experimental performance of rectangular broad crested weir for measurement of discharge

Rheology helps to define the fresh concrete properties as required by specific applications and the concrete design can be prepared as required. This research includes the study of rheological parameters of high-strength recycled concrete mixes of grade M50 and M60. The concrete mix is made by replacing certain percentages of natural coarse aggregates (NCA) with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA). Four concrete mixes were studied by varying proportions of RCA as 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% each of grade M50 and grade M60. The empirical tests like the ‘slump cone test’ performed on concrete mixes to determine the workability mostly give only one-point results; often these tests are operator sensitive which is why a more quantitative estimate can be derived from fundamental physical quantities such as plastic viscosity and yield stress. The rheological parameters give more accurate and independent values which define workability according to the functions where it is to be used. Various workability tests like the Slump Cone test, Flow Table test, Vee Bee test, and Compaction Factor test was carried on concrete mixes with the above-mentioned proportions of varying RCA and the results of tests are simulated to form equations of rheological parameters. The analysis and correlation of the four tests were done with the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). The equations relating the yield stress and plastic viscosity of concrete with the empirical test were obtained for the literature and the graph obtained by these equations are plotted against the rheological parameters and the trendline showing its deviation is obtained. The percentage changes in the values obtained from the equations and the experimental results are also presented.

Rheology of Recycled Coarse Aggregate Concrete

Daylight is an invaluable aspect of nature, essential for survival of all living organisms. At many locations of India, daylight illuminance data is not available. In this invention, an attempt has been made to measure and generate the annual data of daylight illuminance levels. This invention discusses the daylight illuminance measurement and its assessment for moderate climate zone of India. The work also investigates the correlations between daylight illuminance and weather parameters, discusses the development of multivariable regression equations to estimate daylight illuminance intensities. These equations are based on the actual observed daylight illuminance intensities measured at specific time intervals during February 2015 to January 2016. The analysis finds a better association (0.769, 0.862 and 0.747) between daylight illuminance and specific climate variables during cloudy days (July) as compared to other climatic seasons. The average percentage errors of the regression equations vary from 3.65% to 11.94 %, indicating better level of accuracy.
