Mainly due to its long history, sucker-rod pumping is a very popular means of artificial lift all over the world; roughly two- thirds of the producing oil wells are on this type of lift. To maximize profits from these wells in the ever-changing economic situation with rising costs of electric power, installation designs must ensure optimum conditions. QRod is the most widely used, program for the design and prediction of the performance of Sucker Rod Beam Pumping Installations. The QRod version for the PC can be used free of charge. The software can be downloaded for installation and use on any numbers of PCs. The program uses a wave equation solution to accurately predict the surface dynamometer loads, gearbox torque and pump capacity, with a minimum amount of input. The effect of changing a parameter such as tubing anchor, stroke length, stroke rate and pump diameter can be immediately seen in the dynamically updated plots. After a review of the surface and downhole energy losses in sucker-rod pumped wells, some key considerations on the ways to improve system efficiency are given. The most important task is the proper selection of the pumping mode, i.e. the combination of plunger size, pumping speed, stroke length and rod taper design for lifting the prescribed amount of liquid to the surface. The importance of obtaining a perfect core of a petroleum reservoir is undisputed. Despite tremendous advances in coring techniques, some basic problems remain as challenging as ever. One of these is the coring of unconsolidated formations. Most side-wall cores result in partially damaged cores, totally damaged cores or no core at all, especially in unconsolidated formations. This proposed technique promises to greatly improve the recovery, quality and longevity of the core, thereby resulting in a much better interpretation. Freezing has long been used to preserve cores on the surface, but never before used in-situ. Here in this technique, part of the formation is frozen before being drilled out. Freeze coring promises to be highly beneficial in percussion side-wall coring, as it increases localised formation strength thus increasing impact resistance. Hence, the chances of recovering the core intact increase significantly. This paper discusses the science of the proposed process, explains the mechanism and puts forward a new design for coring, which will help bring back virgin cores to the surface. Changes in the current techniques are proposed which is backed by experimental work. Overall, this work will help determine petrophysical properties of the reservoir to a much higher accuracy while drilling, thus helping in identifying prolific reservoirs. The Process Dynamics and Control subject is traditionally taught using mathematical equations, Laplace Transform, Z-transform techniques. Usually students do not enjoy learning the subject based on complicated mathematics. It is observed that students understand the basic concepts better if complex mathematical theory is supplemented by using software simulation tools such as MATLAB and SIMULINK. The process control trainers available in the Process Control laboratory have fixed design parameters, which are practically impossible to change during practical class. The effect of change in process parameters can be studied using MATLAB simulations. This resulted in an enhanced interactive learning of the basic concepts of Process Dynamics and Control, rather than learning through complex mathematical equations. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of standard processes is analyzed using MATLAB. This process knowledge is useful for controlling the process response to desired specifications.

Study of open-loop response characteristics of processes using MATLAB
