Aluminium alloys are widely used to manufacture alloy wheels for automobiles. Alloy wheels differ from steel wheels in that they possess high strength to weight ratio, better heat conductivity as well as these wheels have a superior aesthetic look. The present work focusses on the application of corner fatigue test and the simulation of wheel rim in order to reduce its the weight and increase the fatigue life of an aluminium alloy A356 wheel. CATIA V5R19 was used to model the wheel rim, and the fatigue analysis was carried out using Ansys 17. The results of the finite element analysis study indicated that the stress generated in the optimised alloy wheel rim was significantly below the actual yield stress of the aluminium alloy. A mass reduction of 200 gm was achieved through the finite element analysis by proper application of stresses on the wheel rim. The overall weight reduction of 1 kg has contributed to the cost reduction as well as decreased fuel consumption for the automobile. © 2022

Fatigue analysis of alloy wheel using cornering fatigue test and its weight optimization

There are many applications and sectors in today's era where noise pollution is reaching very high levels. This prolonged noise exposure leads to a detrimental health effect. This may cause loss of concentration, working efficiency, headache, increased blood pressure level, annoyance, and even workplace accidents. Hence, the need to reduce the high noise level is becoming a significant issue. Varieties of absorbing materials are being used in the recent age for noise reduction and sound attenuation. Most of the acoustic enclosures consist of polyurethane foam as a sound absorber. The noise control is achieved by modifying the noise source characteristics, path modification, or muffling at the receiver. The best way to control noise is noise absorption, where acoustic materials are designed to absorb sound. Polyurethane foam is widely accepted because of its good properties like wide absorption frequency range, structural stabilization, low cost, easy handling, and moisture resistance. It has been observed that the sound absorption coefficient (SAC) depends on the thickness of polyurethane foam and the air gap. This paper discusses the different acoustic properties of various acoustic structures consisting of the perforated panel, air gap, and polyurethane foam for the frequency range of 100-4000 Hz. Different combinations of acoustic structures are proposed to observe the effect of absorptivity in terms of sound attenuation. The effect of layer sequence on the acoustic absorption of the structure has been investigated. The relation between the thickness of the material, air gap, and SAC are also analyzed. FEA can accurately analyze the absorption characteristics at normal incidence of sound-absorbing structure. The acoustic structure consisting of polyurethane foam gives the maximum value of SAC for a frequency range of 2300-4000 Hz. The acoustic structure consisting of the perforated panel, air gap, and polyurethane foam give the maximum SAC value for the lower frequency range of 100 to 2300 Hz. In the current study, it has been seen that the acoustic structure consisting of polyurethane foam with an air gap gives the minimum value of SAC. The SAC varies with the air gap and thickness of the foam. The study affirmed that using the perforated panels in acoustic structure gives the maximum value of SAC in the lower frequency range. The SAC of a material is calculated with an analytical method and verified with the experimental method and FEA software. For verification of SAC for different acoustic structures, COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5 results are seen to be in good agreement with a maximum difference of 8.1 % with that of the experimental results. EFFECT OF AIR GAP, THICKNESS OF POLYURETHANE (PU) FOAM, AND PERFORATED PANEL ON SOUND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT FOR ACOUSTIC STRUCTURES

Designing of fuel injection pipe for high fuel pressure and vibrations is most important for a diesel engine's safety and performance. The failure of the fuel injection pipe of a Diesel engine is critical when running at full load condition. This paper presents the mode shapes, natural frequencies and harmonic analysis of fuel injection pipes to identify the cause of failure. Finite element analysis is conducted to study dynamic behavior under a range of excitation frequencies. In these natural frequencies and mode shapes about the fuel, injection pipe is presented for different configurations. The methodology is prepared to avoid pipe failure by providing clamps at a proper location following modal parameters and providing sufficient damping in a fuel injection pipe assembly. Results indicate that excessive vibration amplitudes and incorrect clamp's location are responsible for failure (cracks in fuel injection pipes at the diesel engine's injector side). Different fuel injection pipe assemblies are discussed, control strategies and experimental results are presented to reduce vibration amplitude and stress. The existing fuel injection pipe assembly's overall vibration amplitude is reduced to 34.5 % and stress by 75 % through the modified assembly.

Mouthguards (MG) are used to reduce injuries during contact sports. Thickness of MG material is directly related to amount of energy absorption ability and hence reduction in energy transfer to skull. Many studies had shown that Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) is best suited material for MG. Studies had been conducted on EVA material to find optimum thickness. As the thickness of Material increases its Impact absorption ability is also increasing. Beyond 4 mm thickness its rate of energy absorption reduces very much, Also beyond 4 mm it is not comfortable for the wearer. Studies were also conducted on the inclusion of air cells in EVA material and showed that its absorption ability increases significantly. But a detailed study using different materials, designs with different combinations were not conducted. So there is a need to conduct studies on it.

In almost all of the cases of vehicle accidents, the basic reason cited is failure to apply the brakes at the right time. If brakes are applied at the right time, accidents can be prevented. Automation can assure higher reliability of braking as compared to fully manual braking. The use of pneumatic system can prove to be useful in automation due to its simplicity and ease of operation. So, the aim is to design and develop a system based on automatic control of vehicle in order to reduce accidents on roads and offer a safer driving experience.

A Study of Pyrolysis On Biomass Using Solar Energy

Modal analysis is a method to describe a structure in terms of its natural characteristics which are the frequency, damping and mode shapes its dynamic properties. It is a process of determining unwanted vibratory behavior pattern in an engineering component which is subjected to loading conditions. Modal analysis helps in not only determining and rectifying the problems but also assist in enhancing the product design aspects to eliminate the problems from the roots. The study uses ANSYS WORKBENCH-12 software to derive the finite element model of the fuel pipe. Based on this model, the clamp locations are found and fuel injection pipe assembly is produced. In this report we find a suitable methodology to get more effective vibration control of fuel pipe with minimum input. The methodology adopted here gives the reduction of the engine induced vibration by giving proper clamp locations and increasing suitable number of clamps.

Modal Analysis of High Pressure Fuel Injection Pipe for a DV-10 VDiesel Engine

Wearing has a direct influence on the efficiency, finishing and quality of products. Therefore, this is a critical point, when considered the aspects of tool components recovery, occurrences of tool fractures and undesirable production line stops. Moreover, the industry production growing speeds push the search for a higher efficiency level of manufacturing. One of the main causes of wearing is the friction between contact surfaces by relative sliding in general, with some exceptions as for braking, the wear coefficient and pressure must be as low as possible to reduce wearing. The aim of this paper is to find wear behaviour of bare SAE 4140 steel material. This work involves Chemical Composition testing of substrate steel material to get the exact composition of SAE 4140 steel and it is used for wear as well as fatigue testing. This paperwork also involves wear test on Pin-on-Disc set up. The study uses ANSYS WORKBENCH-12 software to derive the finite element model of the standard specimen. Based on this model, Von-misses stresses &amp; displacements are found.

Tribological Analysis of SAE 4140 Steel

The paper aims in improvisation of the grinding process for elastic materials like rubber, plastic, composites, metals,waxes etc. Nowadays, we find a lot of wastage of these materials. Some of them like plastic, artificial rubbercomposites are very much harmful for our environment. This research will basically help in cautious use of the abovementioned pollutants. For example, Thermoplastics are difficult to grind small sized particle at ambient temperaturebecause they are soften adhere in lumpy masses and clog screens. In cryogenic grinding when thermoplastic is chilledby dry ice, liquid carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen they can be finally grounded to powder suitable for electrostaticspraying and other powder processes. Advantages of these processes are to increase productivity through optimizedparticle size, elimination of caking product within the mill, increases protection from the fire and product oxidationdue to inert milling atmosphere..

A Review on Cryogenic Grinding

Present work aimed at developing, testing and operating a prototype free end torsion machine for performing torsion tests and checking linear strain in test specimens. The self developed free end torsion machine was used to measure and compute numerical prediction of the Swift effect, i.e. the lengthening of the cylinder during the torsion. The equipment consists of a horizontal torsion machine composed of worm gear, spur gear, bearings, hand wheel, shaft, base plate, column, measuring instruments, chuck mechanism and test specimen. An encoder obtains the torsion angle. Experimental tests were carried out at a constant angular speed that imposed a constant shear strain rate to the test specimen. The torsion tests have been performed on ductile materials -copper and aluminium. The influence of texture evolution was analyzed. Predicted axial lengthening and predicted textures were compared to experimental measurements. A good agreement was obtained between the obtained results.
