The availability of electrical energy ensures development and progress of a country while its non-availability means economic stagnation or 'backtracking'. The condition of 'No Power' is the costliest state and leads to social, economical and production loss. Power system blackout means inconvenience and hardship to society. Therefore, reliable and disturbance-free electric power supply is recognised as a key to societal progress throughout the world. Uninterrupted power supply is therefore essential for a higher national productivity and improvement in the social structure. Grid failure can occur due to a variety of causes such as: continued over-stressing, low frequency operation, increased load demand, peaking characteristics of the demand, ineffective load control, reduced level of security due to opening of interstate lines and violation of grid discipline. Separating healthy part in the system during fault at pre-determined points is called as islanding. This is to ensure supply of power to industries to reduce economic losses. In a complex system, intentional islanding becomes necessary to save healthy part to recover from the blackout. In this research work, Thermal Power Stations (TPS) are considered for intentional islanding as they have the highest installed capacity in India. Due to the effect of grid disturbance, a generating station usually experiences a shortfall of power for running its auxiliaries. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017. All rights reserved.

Islanding of energy system

Driving a vehicle in traffic conditions is highly risky. If the driver is not aware of the presence of a vehicle or obstacle in his blind spot, an accident can occur. The agenda of this proposed work is to suggest a solution to improve a driver's safety while changing lane, which focuses on the low-end vehicle. A blind spot detection system for protection against misshapen like vehicle collisions that causes loss of human lives. The system uses two different sensing positions in right and left side of the car. Ultrasonic sensors, Raspberry pi and a alarm are used to implement the design. The blind spot detection system will be useful while changing the lane, and with the help of this system the driver will come to know about presence of vehicle in blind spot which gives warning through alarm to driver.

Embedded system for automotive

The assembly that serves an engineering function is called as structure and structure that exhibits intelligence, efficiency, adaptability, accurate response and optimum performance is termed as a smart structure. Though, due to these advantages smart structures are used in many high end applications like aerospace engineering, microelectronics productions, precise positioning and automation industries, active vibration control of these structures is extremely important. This is because; mechanical vibrations in the structure can have detrimental effects as they can damage sensitive components of the structure or even the whole structure. Vibration control basically suppresses the effect of external disturbances and keeps the structure in its equilibrium position. In this paper, vibration control analysis of the structure for forced vibrations is carried out. The smart structure considered here, is a finite and flat beam-like fiber cantilever structure with PZT patches attached to its surface. Along with vibration control analysis effect of changing positions of PZT patches on this analysis is also discussed in this paper. © 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Active Vibration Control of Smart Structure Using PZT Patches

The power source in micro-grid (MG) is either atmosphere dependent source (e.g. wind generator, solar etc.) or it will be small hydro or diesel turbine. This introduces power quality concerns in MG. It is because of small power number (MW per Hz.) due to limited size of the system and limited resources for system stability. In this paper, a new application of the UPFC is introduced. The slightly modified UPFC can be used to improve the voltage profile of the micro-grid with or without grid connectivity. The proposed method will address the voltage stability concern in the MG using modified UPFC in low and medium voltage system. ©2010 IEEE.

Application of UPFC for improving micro-grid voltage profile

In large power utilities the provision of emergency eserve which is used for restoring the total system following the oss of on-line generation is an important indication of system ecurity. This reserve also has to be produced wholly within the ystem itself. Thus provision of adequate reserve is essential to ystem security but it is costly. Design and development of power grid restoration scheme for Maharashtra state with generating plant Islanding

In large power utilities, mal-operation of power system leads to cascade tripping of generating stations. In this situation the concept of intelligent distributed islanding may be one of the solution. Analysis and design of power system restoration in the context of generating plant islanding

The restoration process of the bulk-power transmission system following a partial or a total blackout, has two main issues during a restoration, these are voltage control and frequency control. Special attention is therefore given to the behavior of network parameters, control equipments as they affect the voltage and frequency regulation during the restoration process. During restoration due to wide fluctuations in the frequency and voltage it becomes very difficult to maintain the integrity in the system. Inability to control the frequency may lead to unsuccessful restoration. Repeated collapse of the system Islands due to tripping of generators due to either over frequency or under frequency causes delay in getting normalcy. This paper considers aspects of computer application in restoration and Islanding in the context of Maharashtra State power system. During conditions of blackout, the process of Islanding can satisfy the power requirements for a particular area, thus assisting the grid operator as well as helping in reducing the time required for the complex restoration processes. The main obstacle in the process of restoration or Islanding is the number of switchgears located at various locations with different configurations. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A different approach in system restoration with special consideration of Islanding schemes

The brain continuously receives the visual information or the information corresponding to some stimulus and elaborates and perceives this information. It uses electrical signals to process this information and then analyze it. The encoding of this complex information into simple electrical signal is done by the fundamental building block in the brain, called neuron. This paper deals with the effect of bidirectional communication with the neuron in the brain that is supplying the signals coming from the neurons externally and artificially to the brain and producing the same effect as that of the original signal. The paper also describes the hypothesis being investigated using data from an epileptic patient. The idea stated in the paper can help in developing an implantable neural system that can co- exist and bidirectionally communicate with the living brain tissue and thus substitute for the lost cognitive function due to damage and / or disease. © 2006 IEEE.

Effect of electrical signals and bioelectromagnetism in the human brain

Uninterrupted power supply is essential for the national productivity and social structure and hence system must be made flawless at any cost. Reliable and disturbance free electric power supply is recognized as a key to 'Societal progress throughout the world'. Grid failure occurs due to continued overstressing, low frequency operation, increased load demand, peaking characteristics of the demand, ineffective load control, reduced level of security due to opening of interstate lines and violation of grid discipline. After occurrence of severe system disturbances, the system may split into parts, which may or may not survive depending on the load generation balance. The part system containing the generation sources and certain loads, which are planned to be separated from the main grid during system disturbance at, preconceived points either through under frequency and / or directional power relays are called 'Islands'[2]. During restoration due to wide fluctuations in the frequency it becomes very difficult to maintain the load-generation balance. Inability to control the frequency may lead to unsuccessful restoration. Repeated collapse of the system island due to tripping of generators either due to over frequency or under frequency causes delay in getting normalcy. In this situation the computer-computer links between the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) and Area Load Despatch Centre (ALDC) play a key role [3]. The priority during the restoration period such as railway traction, essential consumers such as water supply scheme, hospitals etc and lastly to the civil societies should be given. It is also necessary to have provision of disturbance recorder and event logger at power generation stations and various interconnected substations.
