Shotgun sequencing was used for the quantification of taxonomic and functional biomarkers associated with chlorinated solvent bioremediation in 20 groundwater samples (five sites), following bioaugmentation with SDC-9. The analysis determined the abundance of (1) genera associated with chlorinated solvent degradation, (2) reductive dehalogenase (RDases) genes, (3) genes associated with 1,4-dioxane removal, (4) genes associated with aerobic chlorinated solvent degradation, and (5) D. mccartyi genes associated with hydrogen and corrinoid metabolism. The taxonomic analysis revealed numerous genera previously linked to chlorinated solvent degradation, including Dehalococcoides, Desulfitobacterium, and Dehalogenimonas. The functional gene analysis indicated vcrA and tceA from D. mccartyi were the RDases with the highest relative abundance. Reads aligning with both aerobic and anaerobic biomarkers were observed across all sites. Aerobic solvent degradation genes, etnC or etnE, were detected in at least one sample from each site, as were pmoA and mmoX. The most abundant 1,4-dioxane biomarker detected was Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b mmoX. Reads aligning to thmA or Pseudonocardia were not found. The work illustrates the importance of shotgun sequencing to provide a more complete picture of the functional abilities of microbial communities. The approach is advantageous over current methods because an unlimited number of functional genes can be quantified. Copyright © 2018 American Chemical Society.

Abundance of Chlorinated Solvent and 1,4-Dioxane Degrading Microorganisms at Five Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Sites Determined via Shotgun Sequencing

Due to increasing need of using distributed databases, high demand presents on sharing data to easily update and access the useful information without any interruption. The sharing of distributed databases causes a serious issue of securing information since the databases consist of sensitive personal information. To preserve the sensitive information and at the same time, releasing the useful information, a significant effort is made by the researchers under privacy preserving data publishing that have been receiving considerable attention in recent years. In this work, a new privacy measure, called c-mixture is introduced to maintain the privacy constraint without affecting utility of the database. In order to apply the proposed privacy measure to privacy preserving data publishing, a new algorithm called, CPGEN is developed using genetic algorithm and multi-objective constraints. The proposed multi-objective optimization considered the multiple privacy constraints along with the utility measurement to measure the importance. Also, the proposed CPGEN is adapted to handle the cold-start problem which commonly happened in distributed databases. The proposed algorithm is experimented with adult dataset and quantitative performance is analyzed using generalized information loss and average equivalence class size metric. From the experimentation, we proved that the proposed algorithm maintained the privacy and utility as compared with the existing algorithm.

”C-mixture and multi-constraints based genetic algorithm forcollaborative data publishing

The opposed piston linear compressor is considered to be the future of silent, reliable and efficient compression technologies. For long valves, less linear compressors have been widely used in cryocoolers for space applications. Recently research has established its high-performance characteristics which are useful in household refrigeration application. Unlike reciprocating compressors which are driven by rotary motors and need a crank connecting rod mechanism to convert rotary into linear motion, a linear compressor is driven by a linear motor which reduces the number of moving parts. This feature makes the compressor more reliable, more efficient and has a silent operation. The piston (suspended on spring stiffness) in the linear compressor is a free piston, i.e. motion of the piston is not constrained hence the performance of the linear compressor is highly dependent on system resonance. Free piston motion offers the unique advantage of ease of modulation, i.e. the stroke of the compressor and hence the delivery mass flow rate coming out of the compressor can be easily controlled by changing the supply voltage. Resonance in the linear compressor is a function of moving mass, spring stiffness and operating or electrical frequency. Achieving resonance in the linear compressor results in maximising the cooling performance of the refrigerator and minimising the input power requirement and hence an increase in the COP of the refrigeration system. The present paper discusses the results from resonance testing of the opposed piston linear compressor for household refrigerator using the fast Fourier transformation analysis. There are different parameters that are considered to optimise the natural frequency of the opposed piston linear compressor, consisting of frequency, moving mass, and spring stiffness. The piston performs compression and suction in a similar manner as in the conventional reciprocating compressor. An opposed piston linear compressor exhibits high energy efficiency due to its simple construction and less moving parts, its mechanical losses are much less than the reciprocating compressor.

Resonance analysis of opposed piston linear compressor for refrigerator application

With the widespread technological development in the field of Wireless sensor network (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT), provides various domain to take upon the challenges for new development of various applications. These technologies are utilized by layman without having awareness of, how they can use it for better results? FitnessMantra is the theme put forward in this paper, suggesting the collaborative architecture of Fitness Band, its inbound software, data analytics and Internet of Things. FitnessMantra is the solution set forth considering today's requirement of health monitoring. Paper looks after the issues of monitoring the walking activity (Gait Cycle Pattern) of patients under the process of rehabilitation after major/ critical leg surgeries. Architecture proposes collaborative working of Fitness band, data aggregation through related application, analysis of collected data and communication gateway for future updates. Typically used sensors for monitoring the walk is Accelerometer or pedometer. Further communication and analysis of data varies person by person. © 2017 IEEE.

Fitness mantra: Theme for health analysis in rehabilitation process

Mantra meditation is easy to practice. “OM” Mantra is the highest sacred symbol in Hinduism. The present study investigated the temporal dynamics of oscillatory changes after OM mantra meditation. Twenty-three naive meditators were asked to perform loud OM chanting for 30 min and the EEG were subsequently recorded with closed eyes before and after it. To obtain new insights into the nature of the EEG after OM chanting, EEG signals were analyzed using spectral domain analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using repeated measures of analysis of variance. It did not reveal any specific band involvement into OM mantra meditation. But significantly increase in theta power was found after meditation when averaged across all brain regions. This is the main effect of OM mantra meditation. However, the theta power showed higher theta amplitude after condition at all regions in comparison to the before condition of meditation. Finding was similar to other studies documenting reduction in cortical arousal during a state of relaxation. The study argues for the potential role of loud ‘OM’ chanting in offering relaxation. It provides a new perspective of meditation to the naive meditators. This information may help to demystify meditation and encourage those considering this as beneficial practice.

EEG spectral analysis on OM mantra meditation: A pilot study

The retail market is wide and has a lot of prospects to offer, may it be in terms of revenue or meeting the customer demands. Albeit the pros it is losing its daily or regular clientele because of the unnecessary overhead of going through the various aisles and racks to find the necessary product and then proceed to a lengthy procedure to checkout. This paper addresses one such major issue in a way that the customers benefit from and the retailers can easily increase and analyse the sales. The solution is achieved using a low energy Bluetooth Beacon that communicates with other Bluetooth devices that are within the range and hence acts as a locator. In this paper we also discuss the various use cases which can be applied in retail store to address the problems faced by the customer. Our focus is on minimal power/ resource consumption in all of the scenarios. We also discuss various algorithms and communication protocols to satisfy all the aspects of the problem statement.

Bluetooth Beacon Applications in Retail Market

Use of computer science in the field of medical gives the major importance to the world. Hence in the medical field we use the technology in order to help the doctor to diagnose the disease. In this paper we make use of the segmentation technique on the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Images) data to diagnose the osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a knee joint disease and in this paper we are mainly focused on the cartilage degradation i.e., degrading the femur and tibia cartilage. Image Segmentation provides the analysis of the image and extracts the data in order to perform the operation on it. This paper lists out various image segmentation techniques, to perform the segmentation of the knee cartilage from magnetic resonance images (MRI). The segmentation technique by the rough fuzzy c means classifier which provides the degrade in cartilage region and the SVM (support vector Machine) technique is used to classify the degradation cartilage. © 2018 IEEE.

Image Segmentation for Detection of Knee Cartilage

In this paper the test set up is developed in which there is a provision of various surface roughnesses in the test set ups. In the test set ups there is a provision of sea sand, river sand, river pebbles of various sizes, grass, building models of various heights, hills models of various heights and slopes and offshore environment with artificial water waves is available. The main idea in this patent is that various types of surface roughness are created in the wind turbine test set up. The onshore environment can be created by using trays of sand of various sizes. The offshore environment can be created by using a tray of water at the bottom of the test set up. Artificial waves of water are created by a motor coupled with four longitudinal cups welded together and mounted on a shaft. Because of this continuous waves are produced. Another method of producing waves is that use a surface with inverted V all along the surface. The water is needed to move continuously with the help of a pump. This will also create the waves. The impact of wave height on flicker will be observed. For the surface of grass actual grass tiles may be fixed on the surface of the wind turbine test set up. For river bank surface, sand and pebbles of river can be kept at the bottom of the test set up. © 2017 IEEE.

Laboratory model of surface roughness to test wind turbine voltage flicker

In this paper high frequency induction heating is used for deicing the wind turbine blade. Copper coils are embedded in the blade. To one coil high frequency supply is given. Another coil is shorted. The heat is generated in the coil due to induction principle. The wind turbine blade is heated. Due to heat the ice accumulated on the blade is melted and is removed. There is a good control on the amount of heat production in the blade. Due to coil the strength of the blade is also increased. © 2017 IEEE.

Ice elimination from wind turbine blade using induction heating

In this Paper various types of tower models are developed. This tower can be tested in the test set up for different wind conditions. Tubular tower, lattice tower, guyed wire tower are developed in the tests up. These towers can be tested for various wind conditions. Any other new designed tower also can be tested in the test set up. For any given wind conditions and surface roughness the performance of the tower can be observed. The flicker initiated in the wind turbine for various configurations of the tower can also be found. The lattice tower is made of steel bars. The tubular and guyed wire tower is made of steel cylinder. Any suitable material can also be used to build the tower. The towers are scaled down models. Tower models are tested in the laboratory. The results can be scaled up according the actual wind farm conditions and height of the tower. Suitable tower can be selected for particular area. © 2017 IEEE.
