Ground Penetrating RADAR Survey in Antarctica

Liquid crystalline materials display unique properties, which can be exploited in organic light emitting diodes. Polythiophene model compounds containing phenyl groups linked with azomethine, ester, and alkoxy groups [thiophene-3-alkyloxy benzoyloxy aniline series (N series) and thiophene-3-alkoxy phenoxy amino benzoate series (R Series)] were synthesized. Molecular orbital calculations were performed and the predicted band gaps compared to understand the effects of spacer length and linkage. The experimental photoabsorption characteristics are compared with the theoretically predicted band gap. Photoabsorption and emission studies on N series and R series polymers as the function of polarizer angle suggest that polymers of both series emit polarized light in all base color ranges. The electroemission characteristics of the above-synthesized polymers were also recorded as the function of polarizer angle. The results show that the compounds also emit polarized electroemission, and the EL polarization ratio decreases with the increase of alkoxy chain length for N and R polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Structure-property studies and orientation effects of polythiophenes containing mesogenic side chains

Due to the increasing demand in secured applications, biometrics systems are becoming very important for many real world applications. A biometric system is essentially a pattern-recognition system that identifies a person based on feature vector derived from a specific physiological or behavioural characteristic that the person possesses. Over the years, biometric technologies based on face, fingerprint, DNA samples, speech, keystroke and other personal features have advanced to a great extent leading to sophisticated authentication systems. Though there is evidence of interest in the use of biometrics in selected areas such as crime detection and border security, studies indicate that the development of such biometric technologies has not been utilised to its full capacity in business and social communities due to socio-technical concerns. While much research focuses on the implementation enhancements relating to acquiring samples, feature extraction, digitizing and storage, pattern matching algorithms and fault tolerance, there is a paucity of research that focuses on the impact assessment of biometric systems on communities. This paper identifies the motivating factors as well as major challenges that biometric systems face from the perspective of the impact of technology, cost, privacy and social issues on communities. It analyses such impact on communities through various scenarios in societies, businesses and government. Based on the study, we believe that a suitable knowledge-shared ICT implementation framework is required to successfully harness the benefits of biometrics systems in communities. Hence, in this paper, we propose a knowledge-based adaptive framework that overcomes these challenges through a selectively shared knowledge management approach among various organisations, government bodies, societies and other communities. We believe this would be a step towards achieving highly secured communities that make use of biometric systems effectively. Copyright © 2008 COSI.

The impact of biometric systems on communities: Perceptive and challenges

Independent component analysis is a generative model for observed multivariate data, which are assumed to be mixtures of some unknown latent variables. It is a statistical and computational technique for revealing hidden factors that underlies set of random variable measurements of signals. A common problem faced in the disciplines such as statistics, data analysis, signal processing and neural network is finding a suitable representation of multivariate data. The objective of ICA is to represent a set of multidimensional measurement vectors in a basis where the components are statistically independent. In the present paper we deal with a set of images that are mixed randomly. We apply the principle of uncorrelatedness and minimum entropy to find ICA. The original images are then retrieved using fixed point algorithm known as FastICA algorithm and compared with the original images with the help of estimated error. The outputs from the intermediate steps of algorithm such as PCA, Whitening matrix, Convergence of algorithm and dewhitening matrix are also discussed.

FastICA algorithm for the separation of mixed images

Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has become one of the most active research areas in the past few years. Many indexing techniques are based on global features distribution such as Gabor Wavelets. {[}1]. In this paper we present a new approach for global feature extraction using an emerging technique known as Independent Component Analysis (ICA). A comparative study is done between ICA feature vectors and Gabor feature vectors for 180 different texture and natural images in a databank. Result analysis show that extracting color and texture information by ICA provides significantly improved results in terms of retrieval accuracy, computational complexity and storage space of feature vectors as compared to Gabor approaches.

“Content Based Image Retrieval Using Independent Component Analysis”

The present work aims at evaluating material properties of femur bone in Indian subjects, so as to facilitate further study of total hip joint and replacement of joint in Indian subjects. These properties are required to be determined before F.E.M. analysis of indegenised hip joint to study its stability in the bone. The shaft of the artificial hip joint is fixed in femur bone in its proximal and medial cancellous portion. Study of The interaction of metallic joint with bone material necessitates the mechanical properties of bone to be evaluated. These properties were derived from femur bones of Indian donors. This experimental study aims at determining orthotropic behavior of cancelleous portion of cadeveric femur bone. This property may prove useful in studies related to total hip joint replacements. This study attempts at providing comprehensive items of mechanical properties of cadeveric cancellous distal femur, through series of mechanical tests, which comprised of tensile testing, compression testing, shear testing. The specimens were extracted from normal Indian donors. Series of experimental data stated here include tensile strength, compressive strength, and yield strength, modulus of elasticity, torsional strength and shear modulus, which can reflect the complex material behavior of femur bone. The experimental results establish orthotropic nature of femur bone as expected. © Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India).

Isolated Marathi Numeral Recognition using Density and Central Moment Feature

A method for the removal of anionic (sulfonated) dyes from aqueous dye solutions using the chemical interaction of dye molecules with polyaniline is reported. Polyaniline (PANI) emeraldine salt was synthesized by chemical oxidation. Sulfonated dyes undergo chemical interactions with the charged backbone of PANI, leading to significant adsorption of the dyes. This phenomenon of selective adsorption of the dyes by PANI is reported for the first time and promises a green method for removal of sulfonated organics from wastewater. The experimental observations from UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and conductivity measurements rule out the possibility of secondary doping of polyaniline salt by sulfonated dye molecules. A possible mechanism for the chemical interaction between the polymer and the sulfonated dye molecules is proposed. The kinetic parameters for the adsorption of sulfonated dyes on PANI are also reported. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

Adsorption of sulfonated dyes by polyaniline emeraldine salt and its kinetics

Nanofibrous morphology has been observed in ternary blends of low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and isotactic polypropylene (PP) when these were melt-extruded via slit die followed by hot stretching. The morphology was dependent on the concentration of the component polymers in ternary blend LDPE/LLDPE/PP. The films were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and testing of mechanical properties. The XRD patterns reveal that the β phase of PP is obtained in the as-stretched nanofibrillar composites, whose concentration decreases with the increase of LLDPE concentration. The presence of PP nanofibrils shows significant nucleation ability for crystallization of LDPE/LLDPE blend. The SEM observations of etched samples show an isotropic blend of LDPE and LLDPE reinforced with more or less randomly distributed and well-defined nanofibrils of PP, which were generated in situ. The tensile modulusand strength of LDPE/LLDPE/PP blends were significantly enhanced in the machine direction than in the transverse direction with increasing LLDPE concentration. The ultimate elongation increased with increasing LLDPE concentration, and there was a critical LLDPE concentration above which it increased considerably. There was a dramatic increase in the falling dart impact strength for films obtained by blow extrusion of these blends. These impressive mechanical properties of extruded samples can be explained on the basis of the formation of PP nanofibrils with high aspect ratio (at least 10), which imparted reinforcement to the LDPE/LLDPE blend. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Development of nanofibrous morphology in LDPE/LLDPE/PP blends and its effect on mechanical properties of blend films

This paper reports studies undertaken on 3,7-dinitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazabicyclo[3,3,1]nonane (DPT). The synthesis of DPT was carried out by the nitration of hexamine based on the lines of reported method with minor modification. DPT was characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Thermal stability of DPT was studied using thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal analysis studies revealed that DPT undergoes decomposition at 211 °C. Decomposition of DPT using TG-FTIR indicated the evolution of carbon dioxide, water and oxides of nitrogen as main gaseous products. The electrochemical behavior of DPT was studied using cyclic voltammetric (CV) studies. The experimentally determined sensitivity parameters indicated the insensitive nature of DPT towards external stimuli. The performance parameters of DPT, RDX and HMX have been computed using Linear Output Thermodynamic User Friendly Software for Energetic Systems (LOTUSES) code. The predicted properties of DPT are interesting and important from the point of process technology and/or safety. The work reported in this paper enriches the existing scanty research and development data on one of the key precursor used for synthesis of important high energy materials (HEMs). © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
