PurposeThe paper presents reliability, maintainability and life cycle cost (LCC) analysis of a computerized numerical control (CNC) turning center which is manufactured and used in India. The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical components/subsystems from reliability and LCC perspective. The paper further aims at improving reliability and LCC by implementing reliability-improvement methods.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a methodology for the reliability analysis based on the assessment of trends in maintenance data. The data required for reliability and LCC analysis are collected from the manufacturers and users of CNC turning center over a period of eight years. ReliaSoft’s Weibull++9 software has been used for verifying goodness of fit and estimating parameters of the distribution. The LCC of the system is estimated for five cost elements: acquisition cost, operation cost, failure cost, support cost and net salvage value.FindingsThe analysis shows that the spindle bearing, spindle belt, spindle drawbar, insert, tool holder, drive battery, hydraulic hose, lubricant hose, coolant hose and solenoid valve are the components with low reliability. With certain design changes and implementation of reliability-based maintenance policies, system reliability is improved, especially during warranty period. The reliability of the CNC turning center is improved by nearly 45 percent at the end of warranty period and system mean time between failure is increased from 15,000 to 17,000 hours. The LCC analysis reveals that the maintenance cost, operating cost and support costs dominate the LCC and contribute to the tune of 87 percent of the total LCC.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed methodology provides an excellent tool that can be utilized in industries, where safety, reliability, maintainability and availability of the system play a vital role. The approach may be improved by collecting data from more number of users of the CNC turning centers.Practical implicationsThe approach presented in this paper is generic and can be applied to analyze the repairable systems. A real case study is presented to show the applicability of the approach.Originality/valueThe proposed methodology provides a practical approach for the analysis of time-to-failure and time-to-repair data based on the assessment of trends in the maintenance data. The methodology helps in selecting a proper approach of the analysis such as Bayesian method, parametric methods and nonparametric methods.

Reliability analysis of CNC turning center based on the assessment of trends in maintenance data

A mathematical model for a linear compressor with valves is developed. A linear compressor consists of an oscillating motor and a piston rigidly coupled to it. The mathematical model deals with the dynamic equation of a linear compressor consisting of inertia, motor force, and damping. It also solves the electrical circuit equation to estimate the current flowing through the motor circuit. The model considers the dynamic operation of suction and discharge valves. The refrigerant properties are estimated by interfacing the programme with REFPROP to predict the cylinder instantaneous pressure and temperature. Finally, the model predicts the net cooling capacity, compressor input power, and COP for the given compressor geometry. The mathematical model is validated with the experimental results reported by Lee et al. (2004. ‘Linear Compressor for Air-Conditioner.’ L. G. Electronics, international compressor engineering conference, Purdue University, C047, 1–7). Parametric analysis of the compressor is done by varying parameters like input voltage, refrigerant, and superheating temperature of the refrigerant. Results generated by the mathematical model are presented and discussed.

Performance predictions and parametric analysis of valved linear compressor using mathematical model

Linear compressor has emerged as high performance and high efficiency compression technology with its low noise, high efficiency and unique modulation method. The present work reported in this paper is specific to the selection of parameters for flexure bearing used in linear compressor. This paper utilizes FEM as tool to find the equivalent stress and stiffness. In the process of design, selection of optimized parameters is one of the most important steps. The optimized parameters are one which will serve the desired objective like performance and service life at minimum cost. The main objective of this paper is to investigate effect of parameters on flexure bearing to enhance its performance and improve upon the service life of the flexure. Performance of the flexure, service life of the bearing can be enhanced by achieving lower operating stresses and higher stiffness as per the requirement. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.

Parametric Analysis of Flexure Bearing for Linear Compressor

Background:Approximately 50% patients with a deep bite possess anatomically extruded mandibular canines. Objective:The objective of this study was to specify an optimum toe (Θ) of the vertical segment of a cantilever from the distal aspect to achieve pure intrusion of a mandibular canine with the segmented arch in lingual orthodontics (LiO). Methods:The geometrical model of a mandibular canine was developed to compute the required values of Θ (positive values – toe-in, negative values – toe-out). Different positions of the cantilever attachment on the lingual bracket top (occlusal) surface were considered according to different heights (h) from the cusp of a canine i.e. 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm in each case of horizontal distance (x) from canine surface i.e. 2 and 3 mm. In x=2mm case, the required values of Θ at h=2,3,4 and 5mm were −5°, 0°, +6° and +11° respectively. While, in x=3mm case, the required values of Θ at h=2,3,4 and 5mm were 0°, +5°, +12° and +17° respectively. Results:In finite element analysis (FEA), the computed values of Θ were verified by displaying the results of a mandibular canine movement in the form of vectors of nodal displacements along with undeformed and deformed models. Conclusions:In the cases of x=2mm and 3mm, no toe angles were required at heights h=3mm and 2mm respectively. Hence, these can be considered as better positions of the cantilever attachment than others.

Root canal treatment (RCT) deals with repairing and saving the tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. Endodontic means treating tooth from inside. Obturation is a process of complete filling and sealing of 3D root canal space with gutta percha as biocompatible sealing material against bacterial growth. The main cause of Endodontic treatment failure is the incomplete sealing of the root canal. The degree of endodontic success needs to be evaluated based on mechanical sealing of root canal cavity with gutta percha also there is a need to quantify measures for evaluating Root canal success. Current paper discusses the effect of mechanical factors on success in this treatment. © 2017 IEEE.

Mechanical factors influencing success in root canal obturation

Pressure-actuated reed valves have to play vital role in compressor of refrigerator. Reed valves are designed considering the pressure gradient and mass flow. The pressure gradient is used to evaluate the valve lift during open condition; the lift and overall component geometry can be used to calculate the mass flow. The performance of this valve influences the compressor efficiency. The valve response (valve flutter) impacts life and reliability of valve in operation. Reed valves are successfully used in reciprocating compressor so that can be used in linear compressor as well that effectively. The parametric study is presented in order to analyze the influence of the valve thickness on valve lifting. The valve model is then simulated using CAE tool. Physical model of valve is also tested. The comparison between simulation result and experiment result of valve model show close agreement. The analysis of reed valve model is carried out with respect to five design points. The model is particularly useful for compressor design. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.

Modeling and simulation performance of reed valve in linear compressor

Conventional wind turbines have limitations due to their rigid structures. Morphing can be used as a technique to improve the performance of the wind turbine. The paper involves the aerodynamic analysis of the morphing wind turbine blade. Morphing enables the turbine blades to adapt with varying wind velocity. Here we are considering only the effects of morphed trailing edge of the wind turbine blade. The aerodynamic efficiency and the power output vary for various morphing angles of the turbine blade.
