The deformed sedimentary sequence exposed in the core of Precambrian Kaladgi Basin, North Karnataka India, has given rise to prominent regional basinal structures with intervening anticlines. Deformation ceases away from the core part. The basinal structures are recognised on satellite images, aerial photographs and toposheets because of resistant segmented ridges of quartzite. A closure view of Bhuvan images around Yadwad village, North Karnataka, the core portion of Kaladgi Basin also revealed presence of folded geometry in the older carbonates of Bagalkot Group seen along the margins of the regional folds. Though folding in the sequence exposed in the region around Yadwad and further west is described by many authors, no detailed analysis of structures is available in published literature. An attempt is made here to map, analyse and integrate the structures in carbonates of Yadwad region on different scales observed in the field to find out their possible origin. It is suggested that the structures are syntectonic in origin formed in the presence of circulating fluids in high pressure and low temperature during the post depositional phase the Bagalkot sequence in which gravity played an important role in the formation of regional structures. The sequence also has recorded low grade of metamorphism as seen from the thin section observations.

Analysis of Folding in the Proterozoic Sedimentary Sequence of Bagalkot Group Exposed around Yadwad, N Karnataka, India: a Study Based on Remote Sensing Techniques and Field Investigations

Nano-powders are composed of particles in size range from about 1 to 100 nano-metres (nm). The growing demand for nano-powders arises from the change in physical, chemical and electrical properties exhibited by such particles when their size falls below 100 nm. Along with the increasing production and use of Nano scale particles, there has been a growing concern over the impact of this new technology on health, safety and environment. This has almost exclusively concentrated on the potential health hazards of nano-powders. One potential hazard that appears to have received little attention to date is their explosivity. Explosive dust clouds can be generated from most organic materials, many metals and even some non-metallic inorganic materials. Dust explosions involving particle sizes ranging from a few microns to hundreds of microns, there is a need for these particles to be extensively studied. This work involves computationally modelling the explosion, and investigation of critical parameters that can enhance the severity of the explosion. These parameters include but are not limited to effect of particle size, dust concentration and composition, ignition strength, degree of dust dispersion, explosion characteristics of nano-particles, operating conditions. Further, the work involved in this paper looks at the impact onto the environment by explosion of such nano-powders. The possibility of dust generation accumulation and explosion in various areas of the facility are investigated. A checklist for adequacy of existing safety measures is prepared, and requirement for additional safeguards is studied, in order to avoid catastrophic effects. © 2017, Society of Petroleum Engineers

Assessment of Explosion Hazards Associated With Nano-Powders

For wells drilled in shale gas reservoirs to be economic, hydraulic fracturing has become a common completion practice. Production from these completed wells is highly dependent on the characteristics of proppants placed in the created fractures. Fracturing leads to an interaction between the minerals of the proppants, formation and the fluids; this results in the phenomenon of proppants diagenesis. It involves mechanisms such as diffusion, dissolution, precipitation along with chemical reactions that take place at the fracture surface. Over time, this combined process results in a loss of proppant pack permeability thereby leading to a decline in well productivity. This occurs due to changes in compositional differences between proppants, fracturing fluid and the formation. A mathematical model, representing this phenomenon is developed in this paper. It inculcates the phenomenon of mass transfer along the length of the fracture coupled with associated surface chemical reactions, and mass conservation equations are solved for individual components. Further, the impact of finite difference techniques on the results is studied. This is supplemented with studies involving changes in fracture aperture as well as velocity profile of the flowing fluid. Impact of proppant diagenesis on shale gas productivity

Pipeline plays a vital role in transporting water, gas and oil from one place to another. Over the years, several failures have been reported in pipeline mainly due to aging (i.e., corrosion). The failure occurs when the stresses in a pipe segment due to applied loads exceed the capacity of the pipe. Therefore, it is important to predict the realistic pipe stress at the design and assessment stages to ensure the safety across the entire lifetime. As significant portion of the pipeline is buried in the underground in most of the occasions, the soil-structure interaction analysis is important as part of the stress analysis. Depending on the location of the network, the pipe will be subjected to varying levels of traffic and pressure loads that need to be accurately determined in order to perform reliable pipe stress estimations. Several pipe stress prediction methods have been developed over the years and reported in the literature. However, these methods are either analytical or empirical based models. The former uses the structural mechanics of the pipe by discarding the complex soil-structure interaction effect while the later fully depends on the experimental results. To overcome these problems, the numerical methods can be used to incorporate the soil-structure interaction effect more efficiently in pipe stress analysis together with traffic and internal pressure loads. In this study, the finite element method is used to analyse the pipe-soil system subjected to external traffic and internal pressure loads. Further, the model developed is used to understand the effect of soil properties, pipeline characteristics, and loading on pipe stress through sensitivity analysis. Finally, the response surface method is used to develop a new pipe stress predictive equation using the results of finite element analyses.

Reserves estimation is one of the most essentialtasks in the petroleum industry. It is the process by which theeconomically recoverable hydrocarbons in a field, area, orregion are evaluated quantitatively. A major goal in thisinitiative is preparation of training modules that representindustry’s “recommended practices.” Long before the issuecaught the public’s attention, how- ever, reserves estimationwas a challenge for the industry. The challenge stems frommany factors, tangible and intangible, that enter theestimation process, and judgment is an integral part of theprocess. Uncertainty, along with risk, is an endemic problemthat must be addressed. Consequently,the industry’s record ofproperly predicting reserves has been mixed. Despite appealsfrom some quarters, there currently is no standardizedreserves-estimation procedure.

Reserve Estimation using Volumetric Method

One of the major problems confronting the petroleumindustry is the untimely blockage of oil due to deposition of heavyorganics (asphaltene, resin, paraffin wax) present in the oil. Inorder to overcome these problems Flow assurance is employed.Flow assurance is a relatively new term in oil and gas industry.Flow assurance is successful operations that generate a reliable,manageable, and profitable flow of fluids from the reservoir to thesales point. Taking into consideration the above factors the scopeof the paper would be to study the existing system from (EarlyProduction System) EPS-I to EPS-V 8” trunk pipeline & tosuggest remedial flow assurance measures. Simulation studieshave been carried out on Pipesim Software in order to find out thepressure and temperature drops in the 8”X50 km EPS-I to EPS-Vpipeline. Results conclude that heating the crude up to 65oC isimperative before pumping at all 3 installations. The crude oilfrom EPS-IV,EPS-III,EPS-II is required to be reheated at EPS-Ibefore pumping to EPS-V. It will assist in transportation fromflow assurance point of view due to better shear as well as betterheat retention in the line.

Steady state Analysis of a Crude Oil Trunk Line: A Case Study

The deoiled Jatropha cake obtained from biodiesel plant gives the sufficient quantity of bioethanol required for transesterification reaction (1). The chemical and enzyme pre-treatments followed by fermentation with saccromycesscervesse on optimized parameters gives the maximum yield. Bioethanol from fermented substrate was separated byvacuum distillation on 30P 0 Pc and 1 atmosphere . The sugar content increased by chemical treatment is 30g/lit results14g/lit of ethanol. The sugar content obtained by saccrification 60g/lit results 25g/lit of ethanol. The concentration ofobtained bioethanol was analysed by UV spectrophotometer.

Well Trajectory Survey of a Directional Well

Permanent environmental damage cannot be compensated in terms of money. Unfortunately, oil spills contaminate water, restraining marine species of their habitat and food supply. Despite the numerous methods available today to clean up the water body by separation of oil and water, none have restored water to its previous quality or saved marine animals from its deleterious effects to the full extent. The biggest hurdle to this cause is the sunken oil; the oil which may have either sunken mixed with sand and mud or by dispersion due to weathering. Mechanical containment with recovery and use of dispersants will always be the most widely used response option for surface clean up due to its capability to directly remove oil from environment till today. Another spill response tool is In situ burning which is under study from several decades. Efforts are being made to enhance In situ burning such as Aerial Ignition System (AIS) and Chemical Herders. Although it is expected that this oil will float right up due to the density difference and cleaning will hence be easy, this is not always the case. The authors suggest the most effective workflow to clean up surface oil in marine oil spills as well as a way to tackle the sunken oil droplets. Choosing of an effective clean up method should always start with determining the amount of oil, density of oil, type of oil (crude or refined), salinity of water and the weather conditions. The authors thus propose an arrangement for real time tracking and mapping of an oil spill and then using most effective modern cleanup methods like booms, in situ burning, dispersants and skimmers followed by the use of polymer coated ferromagnetic nano particles to clean up sunken oil droplets. Magnetic nanoparticles are non-toxic nano sized sponges that sink deep inside the water body, absorb 10 times their weight of oil and float back up on the surface. Experiments with two samples of oil were conducted to check the effectiveness of ferrous nanoparticles in attracting oil out of water in various concentrations of nanoparticles to find the optimum level.
