Biometric technologies are the automated procedures for validating and identifying the originality of an individual. The biometric systems for automatic authentication are fingerprint, iris, retina, voice, hand geometry recognition. Nowadays, the retina recognition has received an importance, as the unique characteristics of the retina. In the acquisition method, the retinal images might experience some deformations like a change in background intensity, rotation and scale etc. These troubles may disturb the feature extraction process, as a result of the identification process. The Optical Disc Ring (ODR) is used as a preprocessing method. Subsequently, the Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) is employed. It is fast as well as vigorous. Oriented FAST and Rotated and BRIEF (ORB) is also used as a feature extraction process. ORB is efficient, unaffected by noise and rotation invariant. The true acceptance rate for SURF and ORB is 98.148 percent. © 2017 IEEE.

Retina based biometric identification using SURF and ORB feature descriptors

The development and urbanization occurred in past decades led to the concept of smart cities. These smart cities consist of various high-risk locations, so there is a need of smart authentication technique which is more reliable and secured. We proposed smart security framework with the integration of enhanced existing technologies. This authentication framework provides security for the high-risk location, such as government office buildings, airport, military bases, and space stations. The area consists of various Wi-fi access points creating the geo-fence. As soon as the person enters into the geo-fence with his smartphone, biometric authentication is carried out using smartphone and accordingly the person is allowed to enter inside the geo-fence. At the same time, Wi-fi positioning system locates the path of person in the geo-fence. Biometric authentication uses the local binary pattern matching algorithm having accuracy of 80 %. The location of the person inside the geo-fence is tracked with the help of Trilateration method. The Wi-fi positioning system based on Trilateration method finds the location of the person with an error rate of 5 m, which is relatively very lower than the Global Positioning System. This wireless authentication framework provides the better solution for security of smart cities which in turn will be beneficial for maintaining the peaceful and healthy social relations. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016.

A smart security framework for high-risk locations using wireless authentication by smartphone

In a conventional wind rose only wind frequency, magnitude, and direction of wind for a particular site is given. But in this paper vertical wind shear is also represented in a wind rose for eight directions. In that diagram minimum vertical wind shear and maximum vertical wind shear for a particular site is represented. For calculation power exponent law is also used. Representation of vertical wind shear in a wind rose is the research component in this paper. The wind rose for vertical wind shear may be useful to predict the flicker initiated in the wind turbine. in this research readings are taken at different sites like Parwati hill, Jambhulwadi lake and Taljai hill in the Pune city. Application of wind rose for wind turbine installation

The efforts are made to extract the most relevant results while searching for the specific query in huge web storage available in the WWW. Majority of the Web pages are written in such a way that the crawler finds it difficult to extract any specific domain. The concept of ontology is used to find domain specific results. The purpose of this work is to design a crawler which crawls through the domain specific web pages in the web according to the stated ontologies. To minimize the bias on accessing the highly relevant web links in a deep web, we are proposing an intelligent crawling mechanism. The intelligent crawler makes use of effective page ranking algorithm which leads the user to the most relevant results in a specific domain. The proposed Internet of Things (IoT) service will incorporate this mechanism to an effective extent. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2017.

In today's world, an enterprise user uses quite a number of applications or IT resources which have their own set of credentials. These credentials differ from system to system or applications to applications and needs to be remembered by the particular user. Also, user has to enter the different credentials too again and again whenever re-login to any application is needed. This consumes time and requires unnecessary efforts. This project made use of IBM Security Access Manager Enterprise Single Sign-On (ISAMESSO) and smartphone of the user to automate the above. ISAM ESSO securely manages each user's application credentials and automatically delivers these credentials to the logon screens of various applications when a user launches them. We have enhanced this by integrating the single sign on feature of ISAMESSO with Bluetooth proximity functionality. ISAM ESSO client is installed on laptop. Client's workstation and smartphone communicates via Bluetooth in such a way that, whenever the Bluetooth enabled phone of the user is within the laptop's Bluetooth range and unlock command is send via app, not only the OS get unlocked but using the single sign on feature of ISAMESSO, the different applications which the user was using also gets unlocked. Further, when the user moves out of the vicinity of the laptop/desktop it will get locked automatically together with all the applications. The locking/unlocking facility is made automatic as well as manual. © 2016 IEEE.

Single sign on using Bluetooth device

The remediation of chlorinated solvent contaminated sites frequently involves bioaugmentation with mixed cultures containing Dehalococcoides mccartyi. Their activity is then examined by quantifying reductive dehalogenase (RDase) genes. Recently, we described a rapid, low cost approach, based on loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), which allowed for the visual detection of RDase genes from groundwater. In that study, samples were concentrated (without DNA extraction), incubated in a water bath (avoiding the use of a thermal cycler) and amplification was visualized by the addition of SYBR green (post incubation). Despite having a detection limit less than the threshold recommended for effective remediation, the application of the assay was limited because of the semi-quantitative nature of the data. Moreover, the assay was prone to false positives due to the aerosolization of amplicons. In this study, deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) and uracil DNA glycosylase (UNG) were incorporated into the assay to reduce the probability of false positives. Optimization experiments revealed a UNG concentration of 0.2 units per reaction was adequate for degrading trace levels of AUGC based contamination (~ 1.4 × 104 gene copies/reaction) without significant changes to the detection limit (~ 100 gene copies/reaction). Additionally, the optimized assay was used with the most probable number (MPN) method to quantify RDase genes (vcrA and tceA) in multiple groundwater samples from a chlorinated solvent contaminated site. Using this approach, gene concentrations were significantly correlated to concentrations obtained using traditional methods (qPCR and DNA templates). Although the assay underestimated RDase genes concentrations, a strong correlation (R2 = 0.78 and 0.94) was observed between the two data sets. The regression equations obtained will be valuable to determine gene copies in groundwater using the newly developed, low cost and time saving method. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Most probable number with visual based LAMP for the quantification of reductive dehalogenase genes in groundwater samples

The objective of this study was to devise an optimum force system to achieve en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth in lingual orthodontics (LiO). First, the set of equations was developed based on the mathematical computation to estimate optimum parameters of force system. Then, the computer software based on this mathematical computation was developed for the ease of estimation of force system. The verification of force system obtained with computer software was accomplished by three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). In FEA, it was clear that the desired en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth in LiO was achieved as observed from the vectors of nodal displacements as well as positions of undeformed and deformed models. In this way, mathematically computed optimum force system was verified with FEA. For orthodontists, the developed computer software accurately estimates the required force system according to mathematical computation. It simplifies the task of computation for orthodontists. The orthodontists can easily operate this computer software as it is user-friendly. Further, in-vivo validation of this study is required in future before clinical application.

Optimum en-masse retraction of six maxillary anterior teeth in lingual orthodontics: a numerical investigation with 3-dimensional finite element analysis

The literature review indicates that, though water has a good figure of merit, very limited information is available on the use of water as the working fluid in a horizontal heat pipe heat exchanger for air conditioning applications. This article investigates theoretical and experimental analyses of horizontal heat pipe heat exchangers for air conditioning applications using distilled water as the working fluid. This heat pipe heat exchanger study consists of 20 copper tubes of 9.5 mm outside diameter arranged in two rows with a 0.3 m evaporator length, a 0.3 m condenser length, a 0.05 m adiabatic length, and 12 fins per inch of aluminum plate fins. A comparative analysis is studied for two configurations of heat pipe heat exchangers. The first configuration of heat pipe heat exchanger consists of a single wick structure with two layers of 180 mesh of phosphor bronze wire mesh, and, in the second configuration, the heat pipe heat exchanger consists of a composite wick structure (two layers of 180 mesh and two layers of 60 mesh of phosphor bronze wire mesh). The investigations are performed only for sensible heat recovery between outdoor and return air. The experimental investigations are performed by varying the outdoor air dry bulb temperature in the range of 24°C to 40°C and return air dry bulb temperature in the range of 20°C to 24°C. The present study reveals that the amount of heat recovered by a heat pipe heat exchanger with a composite wick structure is 56% better than a heat pipe heat exchanger with a single wick structure at a higher velocity of 2.4 m/s and further improves to 88% at a lower velocity of 0.6 m/s.

Theoretical and experimental investigations on horizontal heat pipe heat exchangers using a composite wick structure for heat recovery in air-conditioning systems

Automated classification algorithms have been applied to breast cancer diagnosis in order to improve the diagnostic accuracy and turnover time. However, classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity could still be improved further. Moreover, reducing computational cost is another challenge as the number of images to be analyzed is typically large. In this paper, a novel Pixel N-gram approach inspired from character N-grams in the text retrieval context has been applied for mammographic lesion classification. The experiments on real world database demonstrate that the Pixel N-grams outperform the existing histogram as well as Haralick features with respect to classification accuracy as well as sensitivity. Effect of varying N and using various classifiers is also analyzed in this paper. Results show that optimum value of N is equal to 3 and MLP classifier performs better than SVM and KNN classifier using 3-gram features. © 2017 IEEE.
