Nowadays there is a huge increase in the use of sensors in various applications such as remote monitoring of environment, automobiles, disaster prone zones, home control, and military applications. The capabilities of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) can be extended using self-organization to change their behavior dynamically and achieve network wide characteristics. Clustering techniques show the self-organized behavior of WSNs. Sensor nodes are grouped into disjoint, nonoverlapping subsets called clusters. Cluster Heads (CHs) collect data from the sensor nodes present in the cluster and forward it to the neighboring nodes using shortest path distance calculation and finally to the Base Station (BS). In the proposed clustering technique, network area is divided into regions. Cluster Head (CH) is elected by using the highest residual energy and the node degree. Cluster communication is at the most two-hop which results in less number of messages from member nodes to BS. Within a cluster, data is sent to CH by member nodes. After some time CH’s energy level goes below threshold value, then new CH is elected and clusters are reformed within each region. Our proposed clustering technique can be used in military applications to detect and gain information about enemy movements. Results are obtained by varying the number of nodes at different transmission ranges. The simulation results show that the proposed clustering algorithm reduces energy consumption, prolongs network lifetime, and achieves scalability. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016.

Region-based clustering approach for energy efficient wireless sensor networks

An ingenious control of DC–DC buck-boost converter with uncertain dynamics is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter operates in buck-boost mode based on the uncertain input either from a photovoltaic cell (boost) or piezoelectric generator (buck). A linear disturbance observer is designed to alleviate the disturbances in load resistance and input source. The control is synthesized using sliding mode control. The stability of system is assured. The results are validated for a practical case of multi-energy harvesters. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Robust control of buck-boost converter in energy harvester: A linear disturbance observer approach

The melt rheology of polypropylene (PP) filled with fly ash (FA) before and after treatment with coconut water (CW) was studied for different concentration of the filler. The fly ash after coconut water treatment clearly showed additional peaks in the infrared (IR) spectra corresponding to the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups indicating good adsorption of CW on FA. The X‐ray diffraction of melt compounded PP filled with CW‐treated (CWT) FA showed large reduction of the main silica peak of FA and considerable broadening of Mullite and hematite peaks suggesting formation of fine particles by this treatment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the drastic reduction of particle size in these composites. The melt rheological studies for these composites indicated considerable increase in viscosity at low filler loading for CW treated FA. The concentration dependence of melt viscosity did not follow any of the theoretical equations suggested in literature. Although, the behavior was similar to nanoparticle‐filled polymers, there were some differences especially above the critical concentration of 4.5% by volume. The frequency dependence of storage and loss modulus indicated crossover point clearly, which was greatly affected by CW treatment. The Cole–Cole plots of real and imaginary part of melt viscosity brought out the broad distribution of relaxation time for the CW treated FA. The CW treated FA melt compounded with PP gave rise to nanocomposites with uniform dispersion. However, above 4.5% by volume, there appears to be agglomerate formation along with a thin interfacial layer, which assists the melt flow even at high filler loading.

Melt rheological studies of polypropylene filled with coconut water treated and untreated fly ash

The prediction of Indian summer monsoon (ISM) variability on extended range (3-4 pentads in advance, where pentad refers to 5-day average) is crucial due to its usefulness in agricultural and hydrological planning. Monsoon rainfall occurs in the form of active/break spells which causes large-scale flood/drought condition. Prediction before 3-4 pentad may not stop this condition but can help us to prepare for the same. Hence Climate Forecast System model version 2 (CFSv2) has been adopted to develop a dynamical prediction system for monsoon rainfall on different time scales. The Extended Range Prediction (ERP) group at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology has indigenously developed an Ensemble Prediction System based on CFSv2 for the real-Time prediction of active/break spells of ISM and has been providing the experimental forecasts up to 4 pentad lead. A multi-model ensemble (MME) framework employing different variants of CFSv2 has shown better skill in the ERP of ISM, compared to the individual variants. Still CFSv2 model shows statistical biases which cause lack of skill in MME and causes false prediction. In this study, it is proposed to employ the artificial neural network based technique to reduce the inherent biases by post-processing the raw model output. The performance is evaluated with mean square error, correlation coordinate and Brier skill score. Result shows that the probabilistic skill of the model is improved with the ANN- based technique.

Improved Performance of multi-model ensemble through the bias correction based on ANN technique

For better transportation system it is needed to make our traffic signal well instructed with the help of Vehicle-To-Infrastructure (V2I) communication for transferring the information about vehicles to the central system. This paper presents the centralized approach in three phases. First phase gives the complete information of Central System (CS), second phase shows the working of Area Controller Systems (ACS) and Area Border Controller Systems (ABCS) and phase three shows the Onsite Unit (OU). © 2016 ACM.

Centralized Approach towards Intelligent Traffic Signal Control

The heat transfer and pressure drop analysis of conical coil heat exchanger with various tube diameters, fluid flow rates and cone angles is presented in this paper. Fifteen coils of cone angles 180O (horizontal spiral), 135°, 90°, 45° and 0° (vertical helical) are fabricated and analysed with, same average coil diameter (Dm) and tube length (L) with three different tube diameter (di). The experimentation is carried out with hot and cold water of flow rate 10 to 100 lph (Re range 500 to 5000) and 30 to 90 lph respectively. The temperatures and pressure drop across the heat exchanger are recorded at different mass flow rates of cold and hot fluid. The various parameters (heat transfer coefficient (hi), Nusselt number (Nu) effectiveness (ε) and friction factor (f)) are estimated using the temperature, mass flow rate and pressure drop across the heat exchanger. The analysis indicates that, Nu and f is function of flow rate, tube diameter, cone angle and curvature ratio. Increase in tube side flow rate increases Nu, whereas it reduces with increase in shell side flow rate. Increase in cone angle and tube diameter, reduces Nu. The effects of cone angle, tube diameter and fluid flow rates on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics are detailed in this paper. The empirical correlations are proposed to bring out the physics of the thermal aspects of the conical coil heat exchangers.

Experimental investigation on heat transfer and pressure drop of conical coil heat exchanger with parameters tube diameter, fluid flow rates and cone angle

For privacy protection, many architectures such as trusted third party, cryptography, client side privacy etc. have been proposed. These methods are neither fully support privacy nor efficient. We have proposed limited broadcast based application and one dynamic protocol for cloaking. We have simulated user broadcast model, to achieve location privacy where users are mobile and points of interests (POI) are stationary. Second experiment is a POI broadcast model to achieve location privacy. We have also presented dynamic cloaking protocol that considers speed, direction & location of mobile user for cloaking. We have experimentally recorded the results related to performance, energy and privacy strength. It shows that our system has more social and human value along with commercial attraction. © 2016 The Authors.

Controlled Broadcast Protocol for Location Privacy in Mobile Applications

Deep drawing is a forming process in which a blank of sheet metal is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch and converted to required shape. Deep drawing involves complex material flow conditions and force distributions. Radial drawing stresses and tangential compressive stresses are induced in flange region due to the material retention property. These compressive stresses result in wrinkling phenomenon in flange region. Normally blank holder is applied for restricting wrinkles. Tensile stresses in radial direction initiate thinning in the wall region of cup. The thinning results into cracking or fracture. The finite element method is widely applied worldwide to simulate the deep drawing process. For real-life simulations of deep drawing process an accurate numerical model, as well as an accurate description of material behavior and contact conditions, is necessary. The finite element method is a powerful tool to predict material thinning deformations before prototypes are made. The proposed innovative methodology combines two techniques for prediction and optimization of thinning in automotive sealing cover. Taguchi design of experiments and analysis of variance has been applied to analyze the influencing process parameters on Thinning. Mathematical relations have been developed to correlate input process parameters and Thinning. Optimization problem has been formulated for thinning and Genetic Algorithm has been applied for optimization. Experimental validation of results proves the applicability of newly proposed approach. The optimized component when manufactured is observed to be safe, no thinning or fracture is observed.

Prediction and optimization of thinning in automotive sealing cover using Genetic Algorithm

Image fusion is the process to combine two or more images such that the enhanced output image contains all the relevant information. This paper aims to evaluate algorithms that fuses multi-focus images. With an aim to enhance the sharpness of the final fused image and also to reduce the computational complexity, a novel method is proposed that uses the Sobel operator. This method is evaluated using mean squared error, peak signal to noise ratio, structural similarity index, entropy, mutual information, image quality index and run time. The optimum weights required to fuse two images are calculated from image statistics using genetic algorithm (GA). The results show that this superposition method performs at par with discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with reduction in run time. © 2016 IEEE.

Spatial domain decision based image fusion using superimposition

Hydrodynamic cavitation offers distinct advantages for water disinfection and wastewater treatment particularly at large scales of operations. Vortex Diode is a fluidic device, which is conventionally used as a leaky non-return valve in nuclear industry. Recently this device was shown to be effective hydrodynamic cavitation device. In the present study, we have investigated use of cavitation in vortex diode for water disinfection application. Escherichia coli contaminated water is treated successfully using vortex diode. The operating parameters desirable for the disinfection are investigated. The performance is evaluated based on the reduction in the colony forming unit (CFU/mL) of E. coli count estimated by standard spread plate method. The presented results will be useful for identifying appropriate operating conditions for using vortex diode to effectively reduce the bacterial load and disinfect water.
