The video transmission using wireless technology is an important functionality in multimedia communication. Video coding/compression and real time transmission are the key indicators to select the appropriate techniques and needs very careful designing of the parameters. The extra efforts taken at the encoder side allows the decoding of the video on a less powerful hardware platform, where the issues like client buffer capacity and computational time are very critical. This article surveys and appraises available literature on various video encoding and wireless transmission techniques. It also discusses various parameters of wireless medium like reliability, QoS, transmission rate, transmission delay for video transmission as a key element of wireless multimedia communication. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

A survey on video transmission using wireless technology

This paper discusses the error performance of Space- Time Trellis Code system over fading channels. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology constitutes a breakthrough in the design of wireless communications systems, and is already at the core of several wireless standards. It offers high data rate and excellent throughput of wireless communication system. Trellis-code modulation (TCM) is one of the bandwidth efficient coding modulation techniques used in digital communications system. Here we discuss the design criteria for fading channels, employs that transmit and receive antenna diversity. It is observed from the simulation results that the code performance is improved by increasing the number of states. Also it provided the coding advantage as the number of states and receives antennas increases. The simulation have been conducted for 4 Phase Shift Keying (PSK) with data rate 2 b/Hz/s for two transmit and two receive antennas (NT=NR=2) system, provided better performance using 64 states STTC encoder. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Performance analysis of MIMO- Space-Time trellis code system over fading channels

Collaborative caching and browsing allow a group of users to utilize internet bandwidth in an optimal manner by minimizing outgoing requests and allowing cooperation during web research activities. LetSurf allows a group of clients to retrieve cached materials from within the group while collaborating through a user interface to access items indicative of group behavior, such as the most recent links visited by peer users and the most popular links visited. An implementation of the system is presented and evaluated in terms of latency in loading a sample set of web elements. © 2011 IEEE.

Detection of fire in video for fire alarm systems has been studied by many researchers, but detection of shot boundaries under fire, flicker and explosion (FFE) is one of the under-studied areas. In thriller movies, FFE occur more often than other special effects and lead to false detection of shot boundary. We tested major metrics used for detection of shot boundaries under FFE for various movies. It is observed that for almost all metrics, precision is low due to false positives caused by FFE. We propose an algorithm based on cross-correlation coefficient, stationary wavelet transform and combination of local and adaptive thresholds for detection of shot boundaries under FFE. The proposed algorithm is tested on three movies, and experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of better recall and precision. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

Algae are a filamentous waste plant growing in any type of water such as fresh, sea water etc. Normally algae are regarded as a menace in water bodies. Algae oil is an interesting sustainable feedstock for biodiesel manufacturing. There are various methods for extracting the oil from algae, such as mechanical pressing, hexane solvent extraction etc. The paper discusses experimental method developed for the extraction of oil from algae which is obtained from open pond system. It is observed that the solvent extraction method recovers almost all the oil and leaves behind only 0.5% to 0.7% residual oil in the raw material. Because of the high percentage of recovered oil, solvent extraction is found to be an effective method for extraction of oils and fats, but is having disadvantage of being costly as compared to expeller method. An experimental investigation shows that expeller pressing method can recover 75% of the oil from algae. Even though expeller pressing method is an economical method than the hexane solvent extraction method, further to make this method more effective, some modifications in the design of expeller are required which will increase the recovery of oil.

Performance Enhancement of Refrigeration System using Peltier Module

This paper describes a way to efficiently utilize free disk space on Desktop machines connected over a network. In many Networks today, the local disks of a client node are only used sporadically. This is an attempt to manage the data storages in a network efficiently and to provide the software support for sharing of disk space on Desktop machines in LAN. In the current situation, storage expansion on conventional servers has constraints like, maximum expansion limitation, costly affair and in case of hardware replacement, up gradation, the manual relocation of Data becomes messy. UVS (Unified Virtual Storage) is an attempt to efficiently utilize freely available disk space on Desktop machines connected over a network. Its purpose is to reduce load of data traffic on network server, to efficiently utilize space on client nodes thereby avoiding wastage of space. It also eliminates Hardware restriction for Storage Expansion and provides Location transparency of data store. The main advantage of UVS is that it can be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure (Local Area Network system). Virtual Storage is virtually infinite supporting scalable architecture. The client node can use the Unified Virtual Drive as a single point access for Distributed Storage across different servers thereby eliminating an individual addressing of the servers. The performance of prototype implemented on a UVS Server connected by network and performance is better than the centralized system and that the overhead of the framework is moderate even during high load.
