Distribution systems, presently, are characterized by inadequate metering, un-coordinated control of equipment and frequent failure of major equipment mainly due to non availability of their loading information and other status. In this paper, the conventional system is renovated to get benefits of automated distribution network with the aid of distribution automation equipment. Retrofitting of the network is done by the placement of remotely operated sectionalizing switches, route switches, load break switches, current transformers and potential transformers. The necessary hardware and the Man Machine Interface (MMI) is developed and presented in this paper. Experimental results are obtained by designing and testing the laboratory model. ©2008 IEEE.

Switchgear retrofitting for automated distribution network

In traditional machine learning approaches to classification, one uses only a labelled set to train the classifier. Labelled instances however are often difficult, expensive, or time consuming to obtain, as they require the efforts of experienced human annotators. Meanwhile unlabeled data may be relatively easy to collect, but there has been few ways to use them. Semi-supervised learning addresses this problem by using large amount of unlabeled data, together with the labelled data, to build better classifiers. Because semi-supervised learning requires less human effort and gives higher accuracy, it is of great interest both in theory and in practice. The paper discusses various important approaches to semi-supervised learning such as self-training, co-training(CO), expectation maximization (EM), -EM, Then how graphbased methods are useful is explained. All semisupervised learning methods are classified into generative and discriminative methods. But experimental results show that the hybrid algorithm gives better classification accuracy. © 2008 IEEE.

A survey of semi-supervised learning methods

Adiabatic switching techniques based on energy recovery principle are one of the innovative solutions at circuit and logic level to achieve reduction in power. Many researchers had taken adder as a benchmark circuit but advantage of adiabatic can be taken only for a large digital circuit. Barrel Shifter is an important block in the processor design and not much effort has been done to minimize it's power dissipation. A barrel shifter needs nlog2n MUX for n-bit shifting and therefore designing a MUX for low power to use it as a repetitive block in the barrel shifter will considerably reduce the simulation time. This paper compares conventional CMOS based design with adiabatic All the circuits are designed using cell based design approach and 180nm device size in Cadence. The outcome of this research work will provide guidelines for designing barrel shifter using ultra low power MUX . \textcopyright 2008 IEEE.

Low power 2:1 MUX for barrel shifter

This paper discusses the performance analysis of multi-antennas systems with receive antenna selection over quasistatic fading channels. In performing the analysis with antenna selection, the selection criterion adopted is based on selecting best Nr antennas out of the available NR3 receive antennas such that the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver is maximized. It is assumed that the total number of transmit antennas, NT =2, are equal to or greater than the total number of receive antennas. From the analysis it is shown that the resulting diversity order with antenna selection is maintained as that of full complexity system, however the coding gain deteriorates in proportion with reduced number of receive antennas. The results obtained with antenna selection with NR =2 and N R3 =3 multi-antenna systems are compared. © 2008 IEEE.

Performance analysis of space-time trellis codes with receive antenna selection

3,7-Dinitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazabicyclo-[3,3,1]nonane (DPT) is a key intermediate in the preparation of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro 1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), one of the most powerful high-melting explosives. The present investigation focuses on DPT formation during semi-batch and continuous processes. Qualitative and quantitative picture has been brought out to realize the role of DPT in HMX formation. The study reveals that only two thirds of DPT is formed in the continuous process as compared to that of semi-batch process. The calculated final yield of HMX on reaching steady state in the continuous process is comparable to the semi-batch process. This study also illustrates the usefulness in understanding the role of DPT in the final yield of HMX.

Comparative study on the role of DPT on the formation of HMX in semi-batch and continuous process

Manufacturing industries are under intense pressure from the increasingly competitive global marketplace. Shorter product life cycle, time-to-market and diverse customer needs have challenged manufacturers to improve the efficiency and productivity of their production activities. Manufacturing systems should be able to adjust or respond quickly to adopt necessary changes in product design and product demand without major investment. Traditional manufacturing systems, such as, job shops and flow lines are not capable of satisfying such requirements. Although a cellular manufacturing system (CMS) provides great benefits, the design of CMS is complex for real life problems. Existing design methods employ simplifying assumptions, which often deteriorate the validity of the models used for obtaining solutions. In this paper, a method of flexible CMS has been discussed and a case study is presented in a reputed gear manufacturing industry, which converted functional layout into CMS. There was reduction of Rs 1 05 234.84 in the total cost per week after converting functional layout into CMS. The CMS worked successfully with two different machines-parts combinations.

Flexible design of cellular manufacturing system for dynamic production requirements

A system for re-ordering the search results to provide to the user results of more relevance to him with the help of his profile. This concept is called Personalization. These profiles can be created by collecting data explicitly (which may be input directly by the user in the form of recommendation, comment or vote) as well as implicitly (based on the user's browsing patterns). This data can be monitored locally (at the client side) or at the server level or some hybrid approach can be adopted. The open recommendation system facilitates the degree to which personalization of results is needed by the user. The system design also includes measures to maintain the privacy and security of the users by encrypting their profile information to counter the threats to the same. The system has been designed as an open ended one and has a window for more ideas/designs to be incorporated some of which have been mentioned in the future works. © 2008 IEEE.

Personalization of Web search results based on user profiling

The restoration process of the bulk-power transmission system following a partial or a total blackout, has two main issues during a restoration, these are voltage control and frequency control. Special attention is therefore given to the behavior of network parameters, control equipments as they affect the voltage and frequency regulation during the restoration process. During restoration due to wide fluctuations in the frequency and voltage it becomes very difficult to maintain the integrity in the system. Inability to control the frequency may lead to unsuccessful restoration. Repeated collapse of the system Islands due to tripping of generators due to either over frequency or under frequency causes delay in getting normalcy. This paper considers aspects of computer application in restoration and Islanding in the context of Maharashtra State power system. During conditions of blackout, the process of Islanding can satisfy the power requirements for a particular area, thus assisting the grid operator as well as helping in reducing the time required for the complex restoration processes. The main obstacle in the process of restoration or Islanding is the number of switchgears located at various locations with different configurations. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A different approach in system restoration with special consideration of Islanding schemes

In this paper, orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) are considered for investigating impact of receive antenna selection on the capacity and error probability analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The results are compared with and without antenna selection of 2X2 and 2X4 MIMO systems. Achieved capacity with receive antenna selection for Nr ≥ NT has been found close to the capacity of full complexity system, whereas upper capacity bound is tight for Nr ≤ NT.

A reduced complexity MIMO system with antenna selection for high data rate wireless communications

This paper presents short-term forecasting model for crude oil prices based on three layer feedforward neural network. Careful attention was paid on finding the optimal network structure. Moreover, a number of features were tested as an inputs such as crude oil futures prices, dollar index, gold spot price, heating oil spot price and S&P 500 index. The results show that with adequate network design and appropriate selection of the training inputs, feedforward networks are capable of forecasting noisy time series with high accuracy. © 2008 IEEE.
