An optical power splitter with one input and three output ports is proposed and demonstrated for near-infrared applications in the wavelength range of 2.3 to 2.5 μm. The device operates on the principle of directional coupling by introducing photonic crystal line-defect waveguides. Its functionality and performance have been numerically investigated and simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. By cascading two 1 × 3-structure power splitters, a large-scale optical power splitter with one input and five output ports is achieved. The simulated results show that the 1 × 5 large-scale power splitter can also perform 1 × 2, 1 × 3, and 1 × 4 functions. The required optical power from each of the output waveguides can be easily controlled by adjusting the coupling length of interaction for photonic crystal line-defect waveguides. The total length of the 1 × 5 power splitter is 40 μm, which is significantly less than that of the conventional non-photonic-crystal power splitter. This is a promising device for future ultracompact and large-scale nanophotonic integrated circuits. © 2006 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Ultracompact and large-scale power splitters on silicon-based two-dimensional photonic crystals at near-infrared wavelengths

Precise and accurate determination of the magnetotelluric (MT) impedance is fundamental to valid interpretation. This paper deals with the results of hybrid processing schemes in conjunction with the remote reference (RR), for a typical site out of several sites collected over the wide band data (∼103 to 10-3 Hz). The standard practice of MT impedance estimation is the use of robust processing in conjunction with the remote referencing. The estimation by robust technique helps in reducing the effect of outliers in the electric field but is often not sensitive to the exceptional predictor (magnetic field) data, which are called leverage points. The data processed with robust M estimation (RME) exacerbated the bias problem in the dead band. The application of hybrid (coherence weighted estimation (CWE) + RME, rho-variance weighting + RME) and extra hybrid (CWE + rho variance + RME) approach helps in reducing the influence of both the outliers in the electric field and the leverage points. These two approaches perform considerably better than either data weighting scheme by itself. Copyright 2006 by the American Geophysical Union.

Remote reference magnetotelluric impedance estimation of wideband data using hybrid algorithm

This paper highlights the Simulation of Multiple-Infeed Converter (MIC) System with the help of "Matlab / Simulink"As AC/DC systems become further integrated as multiple in feed converter (MIC) system can be expected to become more common. In this a) different categories of MIC systems are defined , b) the impact of AC system strength & c) Dynamic interaction between HVDC system connected to AC Buses in close proximity and performance of such systems are highlighted. Simulation results with the help of "Matlab/ Simulink" are presented which provides some insight into dynamic behaviour of 1 category of such systems.

Simulation of HVDC system connected to AC buses in close proximity

This chapter introduces neural networks for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. It presents a critical literature review of both the traditional and neural network-based techniques that are used to retrieve images based on their content. It shows how neural networks and fuzzy logic can be used in the interpretation of queries, feature extraction, and classification of features by describing a detailed research methodology. It investigates a neural network-based technique in conjunction with fuzzy logic to improve the overall performance of CBIR systems. The results of the investigation on a benchmark database with a comparative analysis are presented in this chapter. The methodologies and results presented in this chapter will allow researchers to improve and compare their methods, and it also will allow system developers to understand and implement the neural network and fuzzy logic-based techniques for content-based image retrieval. © 2007, Idea Group Inc.

Neural networks for content-based image retrieval

The response of a bi-layer conducting polymer-based actuator has been studied with respect to various parameters such as backing layer thickness, backing layer modulus, applied voltage, etc. The bending angles for the bi-layer actuators made by depositing, conducting polypyrrole (PPy) films on backing layers using LDPE/LLDPE, SBS, Hytrel, PP, PET materials have been compared. The response of the bi-layer actuators indicates that there is optimum for the backing layer thickness as well as its material modulus together with the thickness of the conducting polymer at which the maximum bending is observed. Other geometrical parameters such as a length to width ratio also influence the response of these actuators and have to be chosen properly for the best actuator performance. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Response characteristics of conducting polypyrrole bi-layer actuators: Role of backing layer polymer

Molecular orbital calculations have been performed on thiophene oligomers bearing heterocyclic substituents at the third position in order to understand the interplay of effects such as the nature of substituent, skeletal substitution pattern, heteroatom identity, etc. on electronic transitions. The geometry optimization was carried out using the semiempirical AMI method, and the electronic transitions predicted for the oligomers were extrapolated for polymers using an oligomeric approach. The experimentally determined optical transitions were found to follow the predicted trend of electronic transitions of monomers and polymers. © 2006 American Chemical Society.

Molecular orbital calculations on polythiophenes containing heterocyclic substituents: Effect of structure on electronic transitions

A silicon-based photonic switch is proposed and simulated based on the multimode interference (MMI) principle and the free-carrier plasma dispersion effect in silicon-germanium. The proposed switch, designed for 1.55 μm window operation, is useful for DWDM optical networks. The switch consists of two input single-mode ridge waveguide ports, a MMI section, and three output single-mode ridge waveguide ports. In the MMI section, two index-modulation regions are placed to divert input optical signals from the two input ports to each of the three output ports. Switching characteristics are demonstrated theoretically by a beam propagation method for 1.55 μm operation. The simulated results show that the insertion loss of the switch is less than 1.43 dB, and the crosstalk is between -18 and -32.8 dB.

2 × 3 photonic switch in SiGe for 1.55 μm operation

Design and operation of an encoder involves the optimization of many decisions to achieve the best possible trade-off between rate and distortion under the given constraint on delay and complexity. In this paper, a new ratecontrol algorithm is proposed by optimal bit allocation and macroblock mode selection. It is low-complexity, single-pass algorithm applicable in areas that are sensitive to delay and having very limited resources. Improvement in PSNR is obtained for video sequences with varying contents and bit rate. The algorithm does not violate the buffer constraints. © Indian Institute of Science.

Low-complexity rate-control algorithm for hybrid video coding

Hybrid composite coatings containing zinc oxide (ZnO) and polyaniline (PANI) as nano-additives dispersions were prepared with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as the major matrix. The steel plates dip-coated with these formulations were tested for corrosion protection by immersion in saline water over long periods. The Tafel plots for the determination of open circuit potential (OCP) and corrosion current (Icorr) were recorded. The coatings containing both ZnO and PANI showed improved corrosion resistance as compared to the single component coating. The Icorr values of PVAc-ZnO-PANI are found to be two-order magnitude lower than that of PVAc and PVAc-ZnO coatings. The results are explained on the basis of enhancement in barrier properties due to nano-particulate additives in PVAc-ZnO-PANI film together with the redox behaviour of PANI and protective oxide layer formation near the substrate. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Conducting polymer based hybrid nano-composites for enhanced corrosion protective coatings

Conducting polypyrrole electrodes obtained by electro-polymerization of pyrrole on vacuum metallized glass substrates are modified by doping with a range of metal halides as dopant ions having different electronegativity. Electro-oxidation of methanol using these electrodes is studied by means of cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M HClO4 as supporting electrolyte. It is found that the electronegativity of the dopant ion plays a very important role in the electrocatalytic activity. Polypyrrole doped with zirconium chloride gives the highest anodic current of 10 mA cm-2 at the oxidation potential of methanol. The results are explained on the basis of the charge-transfer efficiency at the electrode|electrolyte interface, which is associated with the acceptor state created by the dopant in the semi-conducting polymer. © 2005.
