Biomass gasification is a thermochemical conversion process in which diversified solid organic wastes produce majorly gaseous products (syngas) and tarry residue. The availability of sufficient quantities of biomass and effective utilization of municipal solid wastes make biogasification a very important technique. Major focus of gasification technology is to maximize syngas production as it can directly be used for power generation or be utilized as potential feedstock for other chemicals and biofuel production. In this chapter insights into process chemistry of gasification and its key operating conditions are majorly discussed along with various types of available bio-gasifiers. It is common for dyes to be utilized in a wide range of industries such as leather and textiles as well as the printing, paper, and packaging industry. Most dyes fall into a dangerous category of water toxins that have had a significant impact on the ecosystem. Dye removal from wastewater can be done in a variety of methods. It is now necessary to develop advanced and cost-effective methods. Organic dyes may be removed from textiles using adsorption, which is a more effective and environmentally beneficial process. Nanomaterials are a more attractive option for dye removal because of their unique characteristics. An approach to the synthesis, characterization, and dye removal capabilities of nano-metal oxides-activated carbons is presented. This review also includes a discussion of several operating parameters associated with the adsorption process, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamic behavior, and reusability of the adsorbent. © 2022

Nano-metal oxides-activated carbons for dyes removal: A review

Thermoplastic PVC matrix was reinforced with waste fiber portion of Citrus Maxima (CM) fruit for making composites. The CM fibers were separated, dried at 50-60 °C for 24 h, coarse ground and sieved. PVC/CM fiber composite film with different fiber loading (10-70 wt%) were cast using solvent casting method. Sheets were cast in large petri dish using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent and dried in an oven thoroughly at 50-60 °C. The evaluation of mechanical properties was done as per ASTM D882; stereo image of the fractured specimen and FTIR was used for the study of morphology and microstructure of the composite. Incorporation of fibers into PVC made the material stiff, leading to significant increase in Tensile Modulus, Breaking Strength and Yield Stress at higher filler loadings. Uniform distribution of the fibers in the microstructure of PVC matrix led to the formation of cross-ply structure and improved the mechanical properties. These results indicate that the fiber portion from CM can be effectively used as an eco-friendly reinforcing additive to form PVC composites.

Studies on effective utilization of Citrus Maxima fibers based PVC composites

Reservoir characterization is of key importance in upstream industry as it ensures maximum productivity of crude along with the selection of an appropriate method for economic recovery from the sub-surface reservoir. Proper identification of hydraulic flow units and a detailed understanding of pore characteristics are essential in reservoir characterization studies. Here, hydraulic flow unit concept is applied for in-depth characterization of a complex petroleum reservoir from Indian sub-continent having fine-grained sandstone, siltstone together with shale. A semi-logarithmic porosity – permeability plot exhibited large heterogeneity of the reservoir under study. An improved relationship between porosity – permeability was developed through classification of the reservoir formation under study into three hydraulic flow units based on unique flow zone indicator value. Pore size classification of studied core samples were investigated using mercury intrusion capillary pressure curves and later, validated using fractal dimensions calculated using capillary pressure fractal model. Finally, factors affecting the heterogeneity in permeability of subjected reservoir were analyzed. The study indicates that quantitative evaluation of pore system by mercury intrusion porosimetry along with the fractal dimensional analysis can efficiently be applied for verification of hydraulic flow unit classification and hence, for the detailed characterization of heterogeneous petroleum reservoir. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Characterization of heterogeneous petroleum reservoir of Indian Sub-continent: An integrated approach of hydraulic flow unit – Mercury intrusion capillary pressure – Fractal model

The degradation of Rhodamine-B (RB) in aqueous solutions was investigated in this study under the influence of ultrasound irradiation (20 kHz) in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and niobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) heterogeneous catalysts. The effects of different factors such as catalyst quantity (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 g/L), initial concentration of RB (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ppm) and pH (3, 5, 7, 9, 11) were examined. The optimal catalyst dose was found to be 1.25 g/L of TiO2, Nb2O5and the maximum percentage of RB degradation was observed at pH 3 for the TiO2and Nb2O5catalysts. In the presence of TiO2and Nb2O5, the percentage degradation of RB under ultra-sonication in aqueous solutions is up to 85% and 81% respectively. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Application of TiO2and Nb2O5for ultrasonic degradation of Rhodamine-B

In the present work, the adsorption of nickel ions from leachate sample by activated carbon prepared from seeds of DelonixRegia was studied. The activated carbon prepared by pretreatment with KOH was subjected to SEM, XRD and FTIR analysis. Theinfluences of different experimental parameters on nickel uptake were investigated such as sorption time, final solution pH,adsorbent dosage and temperature. The experimental data were correlated to different kinetic and adsorption models andthe corresponding kinetic parameters were determined. The % removal was found to be 75.03% and follows pseudofirstorder kinetic model for Ni. These parameters are considered fundamental for further studies involving the scale-up of theprocess for continuous studies

Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Leachate using Natural Adsorbent Delonix Regia (DRAC)

Selection of solvent is the crucial factor in development of a successful solvent extraction process. The equilibrium data needed pertain to selectivity and distribution coefficients for each individual components present in the system. In continuation with earlier work, the results of an attempt to provide a theoretical basis for predicting a suitable solvent for extracting ethanol from its aqueous solution are presented in this work. The approach used is based on the 3-D Hansen Solubility Parameters. The results obtained are compared for prediction of better solvent for separation with maximum error obtained 9.37%.

Prediction of effectiveness of solvent using distribution coefficient calculation in solvent extraction with the help of Hansen solubility parameters

The use of activated carbon (AC) as a strong adsorbent was commonly used. This work deals with the study of textile industry wastewater (dye) adsorption on AC produced from Bamboo and Green coconut shell through chemical activation method. The effect of various process parameters such as the amount of adsorbents, initial concentration of dye, pH, contact time, temperature and agitation speed on percentage removal of dye on the activated carbon i.e. Bamboo activated carbon (BAC) and Green Coconut Shell Activated carbon (GCSAC) batch adsorption tests were investigated. Testing was performed for quantitative description of Langmuir and Freundlich equilibrium adsorption isotherms. Based on the experimental findings, the equilibrium was observed in 6 hours. Langmuir isotherm was the best suited for the adsorption of dye, with a maximal adsorption capacity of 142.86 mg / gm. The removal of dye by the use of BAC has been found to be greater than GCSAC. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
