The amount of construction waste has been dramatically increased in the last decade, and social and environmental concerns on the recycling of the waste have consequently been increased. Waste concrete is particularly crucial among the construction wastes. Recent technology has also improved the recycling process. In this rapid industrialized world, recycling construction material plays an important role to preserve the natural resources. This study aims to evaluate physical properties of concrete using recycled coarse aggregate. In this research concrete waste is from demolished structure (Near Kamla Nehru Park, Bhandarkar Rd, Pune) has been collected and coarse aggregate of different % is used for preparing fresh concrete. The amount of recycled coarse aggregate used in this research is approximately 125 kg. Many researchers state that recycled aggregates are only suitable for non-structural concrete application. This research, however, shows that the recycled aggregates that are obtained from concrete specimen make good quality concrete. The compressive strength of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) is found to be higher than the compressive strength of normal concrete when used upto a certain %. Recycled aggregate concrete is in close proximity to normal concrete in terms of split tensile strength. The slump of recycled aggregate concrete is more than the normal concrete. At the end it can be said that the RCA upto 50 % can be used for optaining good quality concrete.

“RECYCLED COARSE AGGREGATES”

Methylene blue (MB), a common toxic dye, is largely discharged from dyeing processes for acrylic, nylon, silk, and woolen fabrics in textile industries. While application of conventional removal processes like chemical precipitation, ion exchange, commercial activated carbon adsorption, etc often become cost-prohibitive, the adsorption of MB by abundantly available green pea peel (GPP: Pisum sativum) derived and acid-treated carbon (GPP-AC) has proved to be a cost-attractive option in the present study. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of GPP-AC were examined with the help of XRD, BET surface area, SEM, and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry ((FT-IR) analysis. The influences of such adsorption parameters as initial dye concentration, pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, agitation speed, particle size, and temperature were evaluated and optimized. The equilibrium contact time for maximum adsorption of MB on to GPPAC was found to be 7 h. The equilibrium data of the adsorption process were modeled by using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Raduskevich (D-R) isotherms. However, the adsorption equilibrium data were best described by the Langmuir Isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 163.94 mg MB/g GPPAC at 30°C. © The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering and Springer 2012.

Techno-commercial aspects of use of glass fibre-reinforced concrete in construction industry

Although millions of successful reinforced concrete structures (R.C.) are annually constructed world wide, there are large numbers of concrete structures that detoriate or become unsafe due to change in configuration. Externally bounded Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) laminates and fabric are used to increase the flexural, shear strength successfully. This paper discusses the shear analysis of RC beam with Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) wrapping. Shear strengthening using U -wrapping of glass fiber is studied as following 1) Conformation of the shear strengthening by single layer of U wrapping. 2) Study of the shear capacity of RC beams with increase in layers of GFRP wrappings. 3) The authenticity of available analytical method to calculate shear strength of GFRP RC beam is checked by comparing analytical and experimental results This paper gives the report of experimental investigation with load deflection curves. It is concluded that there is significant increase in ultimate strength of RC beam. Double wrapping is more effective. Delamination occurs in case of triple layers. Beams with GFRP wrapping are more ductile than companion beams. It is expected that strengthening can be used effectively in practice. Shear strengthening of R.C. beams using GFRP wrapping

Uncemented THR can present component fixation problem.The loosening of the prosthesis is one of the main complications leading to revision of THR surgery. Bending in prosthesis stem is a notable feature.The geometric shape of prosthesis has a major role on the stress transfer in supporting structures. The objective of the present study is to analyse the mechanical satibility of steel SMP prosthesis and compare it with its equivalent implant using finite element method.The effect of joint force due to body weight and motion on the interface of prosthesis and bone are evaluated using F.E.M. Finite element model of healthy cadeveric femur bone implanted with SMP hip joint has been developed.SMP is Sancheti Modular Prosthesis which is the hip joint prosthesis developed as indegenised product. 3D finite element model is validated with experimental measurements. The mechanical properties and elastic constants of cortical femur bone are evaluated from cadveric femur donors of Indian origin. Displacement and sinking of shaft is observed experimentally. The stresses and displacements of interface boundary of prosthesis and bone are analysed to observe their effect on stresses and displacements at the interfaces and within the cortical bone. The stress level in bone at inters face of prosthesis and bone are compared for SMP and imported prosthesis. This analysis provided an insight/comparison of the mechanical effect of an implanted SMP which was developed as indeginised product over available imported prosthesis of its kind. Results emphasized the role of newly developed SMP,which will be manufactured in India. It is expected to be available at lesser price than imported prosthesis. Larger number of patients in India is expected to be benefited due to development of this hip joint. Reduced surgery cost will facilitate many patients to go in for THR which is otherwise unaffordable. © Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India), 20081121-27.

Finite element analysis of mechanical behavior of SMP hip joint implanted in femur bone

A given time series of significant wave heights invariably contains smaller or larger gaps or missing values due to a variety of reasons ranging from instrument failures to loss of recorders following human interference. In-filling of missing information is widely reported and well documented for variables like rainfall and river flow, but not for the wave height observations made by rider buoys. This paper attempts to tackle this problem through one of the latest soft computing tools, namely, genetic programming (GP). The missing information in hourly significant wave height observations at one of the data buoy stations maintained by the US National Data Buoy Center is filled up by developing GP models through spatial correlations. The gap lengths of different orders are artificially created and filled up by appropriate GP programs. The results are also compared with those derived using artificial neural networks (ANN).

The present work aims at evaluating material properties of femur bone in Indian subjects, so as to facilitate further study of total hip joint and replacement of joint in Indian subjects. These properties are required to be determined before F.E.M. analysis of indegenised hip joint to study its stability in the bone. The shaft of the artificial hip joint is fixed in femur bone in its proximal and medial cancellous portion. Study of The interaction of metallic joint with bone material necessitates the mechanical properties of bone to be evaluated. These properties were derived from femur bones of Indian donors. This experimental study aims at determining orthotropic behavior of cancelleous portion of cadeveric femur bone. This property may prove useful in studies related to total hip joint replacements. This study attempts at providing comprehensive items of mechanical properties of cadeveric cancellous distal femur, through series of mechanical tests, which comprised of tensile testing, compression testing, shear testing. The specimens were extracted from normal Indian donors. Series of experimental data stated here include tensile strength, compressive strength, and yield strength, modulus of elasticity, torsional strength and shear modulus, which can reflect the complex material behavior of femur bone. The experimental results establish orthotropic nature of femur bone as expected. © Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India).
