As the increase of distributed generation is expected to generate several inherent instabilities such as power imbalance or voltage deviation in power system. At the distribution level maintaining the bus voltage within the permissible limit is one of the major challenges for the distribution networks. The solution for voltage regulation close to output side usually requires manual and automatic tap changers (automatic assisted with motor) of transformer for constant output voltage and better voltage regulation which may result in high maintenance cost and uncontrolled output voltage level as mechanical switches are used. The traditional mechanical tap changing systems accompanies with undesirable characteristics like high maintenance cost and arcing, wear and tear of contacts resulting in inappropriate stability of system. In this paper implementation of TRIAC based on load tap changer topology is introduced. It is a prospective solution for the present and future power grid providing automatic voltage regulation. To overcome the drawback of the conventional tap changing system the implementation of power electronic assisted device (triac) is introduced. The proposed approach has primary tappings instead of secondary tappings to reduce switching losses and to get constant output voltages with faster switching response under several variations in voltage on the primary side. Triac based OLTC is having key advantages like arc quenching, faster response, no friction losses, improved life of contacts and significantly constant output voltage. The results shows that the voltage levels at the output side is kept within stipulated boundaries when applied the proposed system of Triac based on load tap changer. © 2017 IEEE.

Design and implementation of triac based on load tap changer with primary tappings for constant output voltage

In this paper wind turbine blade is formed as a capacitor. The ice accumulated on the wind turbine blade is removed by dielectric heating. High frequency supply is used for heating. The metallic plates are embedded in the wind turbine blades when the blade is being manufactured. The metallic plates are separated by the insulation medium. The plates are completely coverd by the insulating material. This construction also enhances the strength of the wind turbine blade due to reinforcement by the metallic plate. The supply is given to the blade capacitor when the ice is accumulated. The ice is sensed by ice sensor. The supply to the capacitor may be given by the battery bank. The wind turbine is stopped when the ice is being removed by dielectric heating. The area below the wind turbine is vacated. The human beings and animals are not allowed to go near the turbine as the ice may fall below and the person or animal may be injured due to ice. © 2017 IEEE.

Deicing of wind turbine blade by high frequency dielectric heating fabricating blade as a capacitor

In this paper, comparison of seven backpropagation algorithms used in neural network is made for the three phase power quality assessment. Voltage sag and swell are the two disturbances taken into account for comparing the algorithms. These disturbances are generated with the help of programming in MATLAB. The input data, to train the network is the generated sag and swell disturbances. The backpropagation algorithms are taken into account for comparison are conjugate gradient descent, Levenberg-Marquardt, one step secant, Baysian regularization, scaled conjugate gradient descent, gradient descent with momentum and gradient descent with adaptive learning rate. The seven algorithms are used to train the seven networks and tested using simulation model in MATLAB. After testing is done, the comparison is made on the basis of mean squared error, number of neurons, percent of accurate cases detected, number of iterations required for the training process. The testing results for the each algorithm and comparison are presented.

Comparison of seven backpropagation algorithms for three phase power quality assessment

The availability of electrical energy ensures development and progress of a country while its non-availability means economic stagnation or 'backtracking'. The condition of 'No Power' is the costliest state and leads to social, economical and production loss. Power system blackout means inconvenience and hardship to society. Therefore, reliable and disturbance-free electric power supply is recognised as a key to societal progress throughout the world. Uninterrupted power supply is therefore essential for a higher national productivity and improvement in the social structure. Grid failure can occur due to a variety of causes such as: continued over-stressing, low frequency operation, increased load demand, peaking characteristics of the demand, ineffective load control, reduced level of security due to opening of interstate lines and violation of grid discipline. Separating healthy part in the system during fault at pre-determined points is called as islanding. This is to ensure supply of power to industries to reduce economic losses. In a complex system, intentional islanding becomes necessary to save healthy part to recover from the blackout. In this research work, Thermal Power Stations (TPS) are considered for intentional islanding as they have the highest installed capacity in India. Due to the effect of grid disturbance, a generating station usually experiences a shortfall of power for running its auxiliaries. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017. All rights reserved.

Islanding of energy system

In a conventional wind rose only wind frequency, magnitude, and direction of wind for a particular site is given. But in this paper vertical wind shear is also represented in a wind rose for eight directions. In that diagram minimum vertical wind shear and maximum vertical wind shear for a particular site is represented. For calculation power exponent law is also used. Representation of vertical wind shear in a wind rose is the research component in this paper. The wind rose for vertical wind shear may be useful to predict the flicker initiated in the wind turbine. in this research readings are taken at different sites like Parwati hill, Jambhulwadi lake and Taljai hill in the Pune city. The wind rose of vertical wind shear for one of the sites is given. © 2017 IEEE.

Application of wind rose for wind turbine installation

Solid State relay based single phase power quality disturbance generator is proposed in this paper. Digital control system based on microcontroller 89C51 is implemented to control the duration of power quality disturbances. Voltage sag, swell and interruption are generated. Dimmerstat is used to change the voltage levels and so to control the intensity of disturbances. Design of proposed generator is discussed. Simple design and use of easily available components makes this generator economic. It is highly suitable in power quality laboratory for experimental work. Students working on voltage sag/swell compensation and monitoring of power quality events can use this generator. Proposed generator is used as an application for PC based real time power quality monitoring system. Monitoring system is designed in LabVIEW. For fetching the real time signal, voltage sensor and data acquisition system are used. Results of real time detection of disturbances and classification of disturbances into momentary, temporary, instantaneous and under voltage or over voltage are done by monitoring system and presented in this paper.

A laboratory set-up for power quality disturbance generator and real time power quality monitoring

Driving a vehicle in traffic conditions is highly risky. If the driver is not aware of the presence of a vehicle or obstacle in his blind spot, an accident can occur. The agenda of this proposed work is to suggest a solution to improve a driver's safety while changing lane, which focuses on the low-end vehicle. A blind spot detection system for protection against misshapen like vehicle collisions that causes loss of human lives. The system uses two different sensing positions in right and left side of the car. Ultrasonic sensors, Raspberry pi and a alarm are used to implement the design. The blind spot detection system will be useful while changing the lane, and with the help of this system the driver will come to know about presence of vehicle in blind spot which gives warning through alarm to driver.

Embedded system for automotive

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology is most upcoming in automobile industries, to reduce the pollution and fuel consumption. Lead acid batteries are mostly used in the automobile industries, because of its high efficiency and low cost. However a major problem can arise in the lead-acid battery is sulfation, which occurs because of improper charging and discharging. Sulfation is a chemical reaction that happened inside the lead-acid batteries but it can reconstruct without chemical experiment. The main intension of this proposed work is to develop a Battry Management system for (HEV), to increase life of battery. In the proposed work , lead-acid battery is coupled with the ultracapacitor along with an intelligent controller scheme. For controlling charging and discharging of battery a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique used along with a fuzzy controller. The parameter considered in the control scheme are temperature, voltage, current etc., based on this the pulse signal will be generated. The overall proposed system can enhance the life time of the lead-acid battery. From this work we obtained a well suitable solution for battery management system for the HEV, which can enhance the battery life.The proposed system is implemented and verified using Matlab/Simulink platform. © 2016 IEEE.

Lead-acid battery for HEV using fuzzy controller and ultracapacitor

The assembly that serves an engineering function is called as structure and structure that exhibits intelligence, efficiency, adaptability, accurate response and optimum performance is termed as a smart structure. Though, due to these advantages smart structures are used in many high end applications like aerospace engineering, microelectronics productions, precise positioning and automation industries, active vibration control of these structures is extremely important. This is because; mechanical vibrations in the structure can have detrimental effects as they can damage sensitive components of the structure or even the whole structure. Vibration control basically suppresses the effect of external disturbances and keeps the structure in its equilibrium position. In this paper, vibration control analysis of the structure for forced vibrations is carried out. The smart structure considered here, is a finite and flat beam-like fiber cantilever structure with PZT patches attached to its surface. Along with vibration control analysis effect of changing positions of PZT patches on this analysis is also discussed in this paper. © 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Active Vibration Control of Smart Structure Using PZT Patches

This paper proposes conjugate gradient back-propagation based artificial neural network for real time power quality assessment. The novel real time voltage sag and swell detection, classification scheme using artificial neural network is presented. The ANN is trained in MATLAB using voltage sampled signal data and corresponding parameters of the neural network are utilized to implement in LabVIEW in real time sag swell detection and classification. The Levenberg Marquardt, the resilient back-propagation and conjugate back-propagation algorithm performance is evaluated in MATLAB to find the best neural network for real time application. Among these three back-propagation algorithms, conjugate gradient algorithm has better performance for real time power quality monitoring. The mathematical model of Conjugate gradient back-propagation neural network is implemented in LabVIEW. Real time voltage signals of sag and swell for different time duration and magnitude, intensity are acquired from hardware experimental setup. Hardware setup mainly consists of single phase 230 V voltage source, microcontroller, dimmerstat and solid state relays. Voltage signals of sag and swell are sensed using high precision voltage sensor. Data acquisition system is used to acquire the signal from voltage sensor. The output of data acquisition system is given to the personal computer with LabVIEW. The proposed monitoring system also detects odd and even harmonic components in the voltage signal acquired using FFT. Real time hardware results obtained using proposed power quality monitoring system for detection of voltage sag, swell and harmonics claims the suitability, robustness and adaptability to monitor power quality issues.
