A systematic multi-disciplinary design approach to the optimum tailoring of composite materials is a challenging design optimization problem. It involves the tailoring of composite material properties as per the design requirements. While designing any component, typical cost or weight reduction involves the use of optimization together with corresponding analysis. Depending upon various performance requirements, different types of analyses become the design drivers. Often in practice, such design drivers are dealt with separately, allowing the design to iterate until all the constraints are satisfied. However, these all-design drivers act as separate black box units with very tight interfaces, which could lead to quite inefficient designs. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) establishes a link between numerous parameters concerning various disciplines. The main objective of this study is to review the different MDO frameworks applied to the design optimization of composite materials and structures by various researchers and to compare their capabilities and constraints. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Multi-disciplinary design optimization of composite structures: A review

In recent times, nanotechnology has emerged as one of the key driving factors in the technological and scientific advancements around the globe. The material property enhancement is the key towards various applications of nanotechnology. The incorporation of nanoparticles into a matrix of standard material can enhance specific mechanical and thermal properties. Graphene oxide is one such compound with excellent dispersibility that is widely used to enhance the mechanical properties of certain ceramics and polymers. The main objective of this study was to determine the variation in the flexural properties of S-2 glass/epoxy nanocomposite laminates with different concentrations ranging from 2% to 8% of graphene oxide (w/w %) using finite element analysis (FEA). The test specimen matrix layup was selected as 0/45/-45/90/90/-45/45/0 (8 layers). The test setup for FEA and specimen dimensions were selected according to the ASTM D790 test standard for three-point bending test. It was observed that the incorporation of graphene oxide into S-2 glass/epoxy matrix enhances the flexural strength up to 6% of graphene oxide concentration. The flexural strengths of 2%, 4% and 6% graphene oxide laminates were increased by up to 10%, 57% and 80% respectively with respect to pure S-2 glass/epoxy laminate. This enhancement in the flexural strength can prove to be extremely beneficial for aerospace and structural applications. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Flexural analysis of graphene oxide infused S2-glass/epoxy nanocomposite laminates

With the increased use of composites in various sectors as a lightweight material exhibits high strength to weight ratio with tailor made properties. It becomes necessary to focus on various joining methods and different types of composite joints and their strength. The present study aims to improve the mechanical strength of single lap joint of composite material comprises of E-glass fibers and nano modified adhesive. Epoxy adhesive has been modified by dispersing Graphene Oxide (GO) to investigate the possibility of enhancement in the fatigue strength and fracture resistance of the single lap joint. Modified Hummer's method has been used for synthesis of Graphene Oxide. Experimental investigations have been carried out for comparison of tensile and fatigue strength which shows significant improvement in the number of failure cycles for 0.25 wt.% and 0.75 wt.% GO concentrations respectively as compared to neat adhesive. Tension test results showed a significant increase in the fracture toughness of the joint due to addition of GO nanoparticles. There has been 33% and 19% increase in fracture toughness in 0.25 wt.% and 0.75 wt.% GO samples respectively as compared to neat adhesive. Improvement in fracture toughness, among all other nano-reinforcements has been obtained using GO, mainly because of its better capability of deviating the crack growth path to the longer path causing the final failure to retard and consequently improving mechanical properties of the adhesive for the tensile and fatigue strength parameters. © 2021 The Author(s). Experimental investigations on fatigue life enhancement of composite (e-glass/epoxy) single lap joint with graphene oxide modified adhesive

Two different alternatives over conventional leaf spring are developed in this work, such as composite and hybrid composite-based leaf springs. In composite type, carbon-epoxy based multi-leaf springs are used and the combination of metal and carbon fiber material is used to develop hybrid composite leaf springs. The outputs namely deflection, maximum stress, and fatigue tests are determined using the finite element analysis approach. Besides, the optimal outcomes are set as the target for hybrid deep neural network-rat swarm optimization based prediction. The findings shows that the hybrid composite leaf spring provides better and enhanced results than the composite leaf spring. © 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Combustion Characterization of Laser Ignition of Methane Air Mixture in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber

Fiber Metal Laminates (FML) are the class of hybrid materialscomprising of thin metal sheets adhesively bonded together with fiber reinforcedcomposite layers. These are widely used in aerospace industry for structuralapplications. In this paper the end point deflection and maximum equivalentstress of FML cantilever beam made of aluminum sheets and E-Glass fibers havebeen investigated by considering the effect of varying fiber angle orientation,stacking sequence and number of layers. Theoretical investigations wereperformed using Classical lamination theory. Six different parameter sets of FMLwith total eighteen stacks out of which four stacks are of aluminum andremaining fourteen stacks are of E-Glass fibers are analyzed and compared withsteel beam for the same boundary conditions using commercially available FEAtool. Finally FEA results are validated by analytical results. It has been found thatthe tip displacement is inversely proportional to the material index andthickness. Considerable amount of weight reduction is achieved in comparisonwith steel beam for the same boundary conditions. With little increase inthickness of FML it gives better results compared to steel beam with minimumstress values and higher weight reduction.

Investigations on Stress andDeflection Analysis of Fiber MetalLaminated (FML), Steel andComposite Beams

Swirl is the one of the principle air motion inside the engine cylinder. Swirl plays a very important role in combustion process so it is required to maintain correct amount of Swirl value within cylinder to achieve required engine emission norms. Swirl is represented by a dimensionless number called ND Swirl. As valve lift changes the ND swirl value also changes. In this present work CFD Analysis is carried out to predict the amount of Swirl induced in Diesel engine during the air induction process. ND Swirl is calculated at valve lift of 6mm, 8mm, 9.476mm, 12mm and 16mm. After analysis it is observed that as Valve liftincreases Mass flow rate and ND Swirl value increases. ND Swirl value obtained from CFD analysis is validated with Experimental results and concluded that there is less than 5% of error in between CFD and Experimental results
