Gallium Nitride (GaN) high power amplifiers become very popular in recent years for RF and microwave applications. There is huge interest in design and development of GaN high power amplifiers. In certain microwave applications GaN power amplifiers have already replaced conventional travelling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs). This paper summarizes about different power devices and semiconductor technologies used for power amplification with emphasis on GaN technology. Various advantages of GaN power amplifiers with other power amplifier technologies are addressed. Often used performance improvement techniques in solid state power amplifiers (SSPAs) for microwave applications are discussed. This paper also describes some examples of GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) power amplifier for microwave applications.

Review of GaN HEMT High Power Amplifiers for Microwave Applications

Scheffler concentrators are used for heating water and producing steam. Flat plate collectors are normally used for low-temperature water heating. In this research work, the performances of a flat plate collector and a Scheffler solar concentrator were studied individually. After careful study of the results, an integrated system was developed to enhance the efficiency. Also, the experimental results were checked and validated through CFD. Flat plate collector shows higher efficiency in heating water up to 50∼60°C and hence this feature is used for pre-heating the water fed to the Scheffler concentrator. As a result, Scheffler concentrator’s thermal efficiency is improved significantly by about 6%. The steam generation rate of integrated system is also increased when compared to that of individual Scheffler concentrator. This study uses experimental works along with numerical methods to substantiate the results providing a good visualisation of the receiver’s performance. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Integrated system of flat plate collector and Scheffler solar concentrator for enhancing thermal efficiency and steam generation rate

Segmentation of knee joint is an instrumental task in a medical fraternity during knee osteoarthritis (KOA) progression. In general, it is a primary concern to segment, detect and extract the defects from knee magnetic resonance images (MRI). Conventionally, this process is carried out manually in clinical practice but it is time consuming and observer dependent. It is a big challenge to segment cartilage manually from MRI, as cartilage structure has inadequate image contrast and complex tissue structure. Currently, semiautomatic and automatic methods are used to overcome this limitation. In the proposed method, we present a segmentation approach for the extraction of bone and cartilage from MRI. Here, in this paper we perform preprocessing for image enhancement and noise removal of knee MR image using Gaussian blur and block matching 3D method. Larger bones in the knee joint are segmented first to perform reliable cartilage segmentation. Hence distance regularization level set evolution (DRLSE) is used for bone extraction successively followed by cartilage segmentation. Further, the performance of the proposed method is analyzed on a variety of knee MR images and experimental results demonstrated the improvement in accuracy compared to existing approaches. In conclusion, it is observed that the proposed technique improves significant performance with consistency and robustness during the segmentation process. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Segmentation of knee bone using MRI

Stability of an implant is a crucial factor in osseointegration. As osseointegration (bone remodelling and regeneration at implant surface) is directly dependent on primary stability, it is extremely important to accurately measure the primary stability not only at the time of implant placement but also at various stages of healing. It is, therefore, critical to use a method of measurement such that it continuously monitors implant stability at regular intervals of time during the healing process. Over several decades, numerous methods have been employed to find implant stability. These methods are categorised as invasive and non-invasive. Historically, destructive methods such as tensional test and removal torque test were used extensively to measure implant stability. However, they have lost credibility due to their invasiveness and ethical issues. In recent times, non-invasive techniques such as RFA (resonance frequency analysis), reverse torque analysis, have gained popularity. Due to the availability of a large number of methods to check implant stability, it is important to critically analyse them, compare their advantages and disadvantages to select the most suitable and convenient method. This enables the practitioner to predict early implant failure and take necessary action. This review focuses on the presently available methods to measure stability of implant. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd.

Dental implant stability and its measurements to improve osseointegration at the bone-implant interface: A review

Solar energy, which is available in abundant in nature, is least utilised. As per primary energy product, solar energy conversion can be of three different ways: solar fuels, solar electricity, and solar thermal systems. These three approaches are presently not being fully utilised. Concentrated solar energy (CSE) is an alternative to other types of energy for modifying the surfaces of metallic materials. Attempt has been made to overview the current status of CSE in materials processing technology. In this paper, applications of CSE through solar furnace and Fresnel lens for hardening, coatings, sintering, nitriding, synthesis and welding are discussed.

Concentrated solar energy in materials processing

The role of two solvents, namely N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), on the dispersion of CNF in PVDF matrix has been studied when the composites are synthesized by non-solvent precipitation route followed by melt crystallization at 200 °C and quenching in water. The electrical conductivities of melt-crystallized PVDF–CNF, PVDF-7 wt% graphite-CNF nanocomposites synthesized using DMAc solvent are higher than that of composites synthesized using DMF solvent. Thermogravimetric analysis of PVDF-7 wt% graphite, PVDF-3 wt% CNF suggests that the onset temperature of thermal degradation of the composite synthesized using DMAc is 20 °C higher than that of the same composite synthesized by using DMF. The SEM analysis of cross section of melt-crystallized, water-quenched PVDF-3 wt% CNF clearly proves better dispersion of CNF when DMAc solvent is used. Structure development in the polymer when CNF is incorporated has been understood in terms of lattice mismatch theory. DSC analysis proves the nucleating ability of CNF when incorporated in the polymer matrix as crystallization temperature (Tc) is enhanced by 5 °C. At low frequency (40 Hz), the intergranular capacitance is more than two times higher for PVDF-3 wt% CNF composites synthesized by using DMAc solvent when compared to that of DMF employed composites. The enhancement of storage modulus at − 90 °C for PVDF-7 wt% CNF composites synthesized by using DMAc solvent when compared to that of DMF employed same composite supports better dispersion of CNF in PVDF matrix in the former case as revealed by DMA.

Effect of casting solvent on the structure development, electrical, thermal behavior of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) conducting binary andhybrid nanocomposites

Real Time Object Detection Using Tensor Flow Lite system has been developed to help visually impaired people for navigation and surrounding objects detection. This system is based on raspberry pi, a single board compute model and Tensor Flow lite framework. The algorithm developed is tested for detecting objects like a table, a chair, a TV, a laptop, a mouse, a cell phone, a bottle etc. This system is capable of detecting people as well as objects. The detection accuracy of 70% is achieved. The testing is done in varying light, background, and distance in indoors as well as outdoor scenarios. This system uses Google based sample quantized SSDLite-MobileNet-v2 object detection model, which is trained of the MSCOCO dataset and converted to run on TensorFlow Lite. The information regarding the detected object is converted into audio for guiding the visually challenged person. © WCSE 2020.

Real time object detection for visually impaired person using tensor flow lite

Despite all significant advances in the detection of pedestrians transmitted by computer vision for driver assistance, it remains a challenging issue. Several studies have been conducted to develop the accuracy of pedestrian detection of intelligent surveillance systems. However, person detection in outdoor conditions is a difficult problem due to the variation in lighting, shadows and occlusions. In this paper we have proposed new methodology for pedestrian detection and tracking under varying light condition for advanced driver assistance system. The main aim of the proposed systems is to avoid collision of vehicles with the pedestrians while driving on roads. It is very difficult to detect a pedestrian due to the varying light conditions (night time, fog). With the proposed systems another way of driver provision is realized, which can pay off the weaknesses of the human visual system. The evaluation is done on firsthand dataset that constructed for this purpose as well as on the freely available KAIST multispectral dataset. Three kinds of databases were tested, taking into account various environmental factors with daytime, night time and fog. Experiments shows proposed system is strong and works successfully. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Effective Pedestrian Detection and Tracking in Varying Light Conditions

This work has focused on investigating the comparative performance of the conventional type of offshore jacket substructure and a modified twisted-tripod jacket type (MTJ) under static and dynamic loading environment. Conventional four-legged and four number of MTJ structures, with a finite number of leg twisting angles from 0° to 90°, for supporting 5 MW NREL wind turbine were analysed for a selected site. In order to compare performance under dynamic loading, the dimensions of the structures were designed iteratively using static stress analysis to ensure that all structures had a similar level of load-carrying capability. Static analyses were performed using SACS v8 and models were imported to SAP-2000 for dynamic response spectrum analyses. The results obtained here reveal that, in addition to savings in material costs, the modified twisted-tripod jacket performs more efficiently than conventional four-legged jackets. This study has established a framework of procedure for simplified analysis of wind turbine jackets under dynamic loading environment. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Structural performance assessment of offshore wind turbine jackets-a comparative study under dynamic loading environment

In this research, the effects of the acidic environment and accelerated carbonation curing (ACC) on concrete admixed with rice straw ash (RSA), microsilica (MS) and combination of both were evaluated. The loss of mass and compressive strength of concrete admixed with RSA and MS were observed at 28 and 365 days of water curing followed by 30 days of immersion in two acidic solutions of 2.5% concentration, i.e., hydrochloric (HCl) and sulphuric (H2SO4) acid. The least loss of mass and compressive strength under acidic environment were observed in concrete admixed with a combination of 10% RSA and 5% MS (mix R2M3). The percentage loss of compressive strength (compared to strength at 58 days of water curing) and percentage loss of mass (compared to initial mass before acidic immersion) of mix R2M3 at 28 days of water curing were 3.69% and 2.19% respectively under HCl immersion and 1.81% and 1.27% respectively under H2SO4 immersion. The corrosive impact of HCl on concrete was higher as compared to H2SO4. The characterization of concrete mixtures after acidic immersion was performed using XRD and SEM analysis. The mechanical strength and carbonation depth of concrete admixed with RSA and MS were observed at 28 days of combined curing (14 days of water curing, 14 days of ACC). The maximum increase in the strength of concrete at 28 days of combined curing as compared to 28 days of water curing was found in mix R2M3. Also, the carbonation depth was highest in mix R2M3 (17 mm). © 2019 Elsevier Ltd
