Due to the recent increase in various terrorist activities all over the world, the safety of the structures should be designed to resist bomb blasts. Blast loads are basically dynamic loads of a type that needs to be attentively calculated like wind and seismic loads and the structures should be designed by considering them to make it blast resistant. The behavior of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) under the condition of blast loading is presented in this paper. The panel of 50mm thickness is taken into consideration. The effect of varying the aspect ratio of fibres in the fibre reinforced concrete is studied.

Comparative Study On SFRC Composites Under Blast Load By Varying Aspect Ratio Of Fibres

The increased number of terrorist attacks mostly in the last few years has shown that the effect of blast loads on buildings is a serious matter which we should be considered during design process of buildings. Although these kinds of terrorist attacks are exceptional cases, man-made disasters; dynamic loads i.e. blast loads are really need to be carefully calculated just like earthquake and wind loads. The investigation of behavior of Ferrocement composites and Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete composites under blast loading is presented in this paper. Individual ferrocement panels and Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete panels are tested analytically under blast load, and the behavior against blast loading is then studied.

Comparative study of steel fiber reinforced concrete panels and ferrocement panels under blast loading by FEM analysis

Growth in the construction industry is growing dailyand the demolition of the old structure creates massive quantitiesof rubbles and from that 30-40% were coarse aggregate. Utilizingof coarse aggregates through recycling helps to give economicand sustainable development. The aim of this study is to achievehigh compressive strength with minimum wear effect of newconcrete made of recycled concrete aggregate. To achieve aim inthis study has been considered high strength of concrete mixi.e.M40, M50 and M60 for compressive strength and for abrasiontest, considered mix of M50 and M60. A replacement percentagefor the compressive strength test was 0%(normal), 20%, 40%,60%, and 80% while for abrasion test considering 0%, 20%, 40%and 60% replacement ratio. Achieve High Compressive Strength and durability of Concrete Made from Recycled Concrete Aggregate

Introduction: India is one of the five countries with the lowest public health spending levels: the private medical services are one of the most developed fields, meanwhile public health ones are totally inadequate with the most number of health facilities concentrated in cities, where only the 25% of the population lives. Public facilities are mainly made up of primary level and not well distributed on the territories, so they do not guarantee accessibility to a wide sample of population, who live in rural areas of India. Methodology: Starting from the analysis of three different health care levels in the Indian context, the research team developed a meta-project that considers all the current criticisms and the Indian customs through a flexible layout that responds to the healthcare needs of population. Result and Discussion: The research work is aimed to develop a meta-project that considers all the current criticisms and the Indian customs through flexible layouts that responds to the healthcare needs of population. Conclusion: The innovation of the research work is to develop the hygienic aspects, the layout and the distribution, the sub-division of the medical functions through the Indian culture and the needs of the country. The choice of lowly technologies permits to promote the usage of local materials, their maintenance and skills for creating a virtuous economic system.

Healthcare for all in emerging countries: a preliminary investigation of facilities in Kolkata, India

Column is the one of the most critical structural element requiring high level of care while designing. It has to carry the axial compressive load and resist moment due to eccentric loading. The following study is about Ferrocement Jacketed Column (FJC) and concrete filled tubular column (CFT) that are recently being adopted due to their various advantages over traditional column sections. In this study, a total of 20 sections of short column sections having circular and square cross section with pure confinement are experimentally tested to obtain the ultimate load carrying capacity of the short column for M40 grade concrete. The section is designed such that the core of the section is 10mm outside the confinement at the top and bottom so as to not load the ferrocement tube or steel tube longitudinally. The sections are to be tested using Universal Testing Machine. The experimental values are compared with the numerically found valued of compressive strength in each section. Also the strain increase due to confinement is analyzed. It was observed that the circular tubes provided more effective confinement as compared to square tubes. The confinement effect was higher for material with higher tensile strength and provided greater increase in load carrying capacity. The strain increase was of the order of 6 to 9 times strain of plain concrete at yield.

Behavior of Columns with Ferro cement and Steel Tube Confinement under Axial Compression

The present study describes the results of testing flat ferrocement panels reinforced with different numbers of woven mesh layers and three different types of steel fiber, for the mix that replaces river sand with crush sand. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of using woven wire mesh as reinforcement along with different types of steel fibers on the ultimate flexural strength of ferrocast panels. The number of layers used were minimum of 2. Panels were casted with mortar mix ratio (1:1.5) and water cement ratio (0.4) including super plasticizer ( Perma Ps-34 ) with dosage of 1.5% by weight of cement. Panels were tested under two point loading system under UTM machine after curing period of 28 days. Test results shows that panels combined with hooked end fibres exhibits greater flexural strength and less deflection as that compared with panels having less mesh layers and other steel fibers. The energy absorption of these panels were also studied through impact test. The results showed that the addition of fibers increased the first crack load and ultimate failure load for all types of fibres.

Effect of Different Types of Fibers on the Flexural Strength of Ferrocement Panels

Normally concrete structures are designed for static loads. Sometime such structures are coming across the dynamic loads arising from military activities, terrorist activities. Therefore, this investigation will undertake to provide the needed information about the influence of various parameters on performance characteristics of steel fiber reinforced concrete and increased need to strengthen concrete structures. This study aims to investigate the impact resistance of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC), incorporated with steel fibers at various dosages. For this, a drop weight test was performed on the 28 days cured plain and fiber reinforced concrete specimens. End hook, Crimped and flat steel fiber of length 35 mm and an aspect ratio equal to 80, 50, 77.77, 46.66 were added to concrete in proportion 1.5% with water cement ratio of 0.40. The experimental test results of steel reinforced fiber concrete are compared with plain concrete and conclusions are arrived.

The article gives broad view of utility of materials that are used by Indian manufacturing companies for biomedical application The article discusses about the trends in Indian manufacturing scenario, and tries to give broad idea for possible improvements to be undertaken while product design of implant ,with reference to increasing Indian market for implant manufacturers. The attempt is made to analyze the structural response of Zirconium and tantalum as implant for fixation. The Finite Element analysis gives preliminary bone implant response under flexural loads.

Comparative study of initial structural stability of oxinium hip joint fixation with steel hip joint fixation

Uncemented THR can present component fixation problem.The loosening of the prosthesis is one of the main complications leading to revision of THR surgery. Bending in prosthesis stem is a notable feature.The geometric shape of prosthesis has a major role on the stress transfer in supporting structures. The objective of the present study is to analyse the mechanical satibility of steel SMP prosthesis and compare it with its equivalent implant using finite element method.The effect of joint force due to body weight and motion on the interface of prosthesis and bone are evaluated using F.E.M. Finite element model of healthy cadeveric femur bone implanted with SMP hip joint has been developed.SMP is Sancheti Modular Prosthesis which is the hip joint prosthesis developed as indegenised product. 3D finite element model is validated with experimental measurements. The mechanical properties and elastic constants of cortical femur bone are evaluated from cadveric femur donors of Indian origin. Displacement and sinking of shaft is observed experimentally. The stresses and displacements of interface boundary of prosthesis and bone are analysed to observe their effect on stresses and displacements at the interfaces and within the cortical bone. The stress level in bone at inters face of prosthesis and bone are compared for SMP and imported prosthesis. This analysis provided an insight/comparison of the mechanical effect of an implanted SMP which was developed as indeginised product over available imported prosthesis of its kind. Results emphasized the role of newly developed SMP,which will be manufactured in India. It is expected to be available at lesser price than imported prosthesis. Larger number of patients in India is expected to be benefited due to development of this hip joint. Reduced surgery cost will facilitate many patients to go in for THR which is otherwise unaffordable. © Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India), 20081121-27.

Finite element analysis of mechanical behavior of SMP hip joint implanted in femur bone

The present work aims at evaluating material properties of femur bone in Indian subjects, so as to facilitate further study of total hip joint and replacement of joint in Indian subjects. These properties are required to be determined before F.E.M. analysis of indegenised hip joint to study its stability in the bone. The shaft of the artificial hip joint is fixed in femur bone in its proximal and medial cancellous portion. Study of The interaction of metallic joint with bone material necessitates the mechanical properties of bone to be evaluated. These properties were derived from femur bones of Indian donors. This experimental study aims at determining orthotropic behavior of cancelleous portion of cadeveric femur bone. This property may prove useful in studies related to total hip joint replacements. This study attempts at providing comprehensive items of mechanical properties of cadeveric cancellous distal femur, through series of mechanical tests, which comprised of tensile testing, compression testing, shear testing. The specimens were extracted from normal Indian donors. Series of experimental data stated here include tensile strength, compressive strength, and yield strength, modulus of elasticity, torsional strength and shear modulus, which can reflect the complex material behavior of femur bone. The experimental results establish orthotropic nature of femur bone as expected. © Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India).

Experimental determination of material properties of cortical cadeveric femur bone

Domestic water heater container is one of the applications that ask for high manufacturability, high strength, heat retention, corrosion resistance, hygienic operations, longer life, better ergonomics and optimum economy. Stainless steel is finding a place in this application, replacing conventional copper and enamel coated carbon steel containers. Using stainless steel for chemical handling equipment or heat transfer application is not a new concept. However using it for manufacturing container of domestic water heater is itself a state of art. With a proper understanding of behavior of stainless steel it becomes a success story. Performance of stainless steel as inner container of water heater depends on chemical composition, variation in microstructure, surface conditions, residual stresses, welding parameters, welding method and pre- and post-welding treatments. The paper discusses about the requirement of the material and suitability of the stainless steel for this particular application.

Stainless steel: A prospective material for water heater container

3-Nitrolawsonemonoxime, 3-aminolawsonemonoxime and their chelates of Ca(II), Mg(II), Sn(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) have been synthesized and their antibacterial activity studies were carried out. The results obtained were analysed to find the effect of change in concentration of test compounds, change in the substituents at C-3 position in the quinonoid ring of the ligand and the effect of change of central metal ion.The NO2 group at C-3 position in the quinonoid ring of the ligand showed greater activity than NH2 group. The activity of 3-nitrolawsonemonoxime was found to be decreased while that of 3-aminolawsonemonoxime, was observed to be increased due to chelation. In case of the chelates, activity was increased if their concentrations were increased sufficiently (doubled). But in case of Ca(II)-3-aminolawsonemonoximate, generally there has been no change in the activity with concentration. Elemental analysis andTG indicated ML22H2O molecular composition for the chelates.
